CASE STUDY – DAMODAR

ETP – MODEL APAS 100


Introduction

M/s Tirupati Rice Mill & Tirupati Rice Mill unit-2 is a 100 TPD Rice Mill in Burdwan district of West
Bengal. The total plant discharges about 100 KL of effluent daily from their Paddy Parboiling process.
When discharged without treatment, it caused destruction of crop in surrounding fields.

The Problem
The Mill was facing tremendous pressure from local farmers and was unable to operate the plant at full
capacity due to limitation in discharge of waste water.

The conventional ETP’s available in the market were expensive and required high electricity and
chemical cost. This was not affordable by the industry.

Mr. Jeevan Hazra the proprietor of the mill was keen to reuse the treated water to eliminate all chances
of local farmers’ complaints.

He approached Damodar Process to design a plant suitable to be operated within the constraints of a
typical rice mill setup. Features required were–

 Affordable Cost of Plant

 Low cost of Chemicals and Power

 Low Plant Footprint and Civil cost.

 Minimum operator involvement

 Ability of system to manage shock loads

 Outlet quality not only within PCB norms but also suitable for at least part reuse.

About Damodar Process plants (P) Ltd – ETP Division

Damodar Process has been working in the rice industry since over 3 decades as manufacturers of
‘DAMODAR’ brand of machines and also as business partners of other leading Indian plant & machinery
manufacturers. The ETP division was started in the year 2012 with a technology tie up with ‘APAS’ a
Chennai based company specialized in Water &Waste Water Technologies.

The Solution
In order to meet requirements listed by the miller, Damodar decided to go for a prefabricated ETP based on
MBBR (Moving Bed Bio Reactor) technology. It is a High Speed treatment technology, permitting three
times more loading in comparison to conventional plants. This gives it the advantage of being compact,
ability to manage fluctuation loads and does not demand constant operator presence. Prefabricated plants
have the added advantage of quick installation low civil costs.

Sodium hypochlorite 2 Ltrs @ Rs.15/- Rs.30.00

Total Cost Per Day Rs.150.00

ELECTRICAL COST:

CONNECTED LOAD IN THE PLANT : 8.5 HP

ACTUAL ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION PER DAY : 50 units. (Approx).

TOTAL ELECTRICAL COST PER DAY : Rs.350.00

COST OF MANPOWER:

Cannot be determined as plant is being operated by existing boiler operator.
