Back Ground Information: Natalie K. is a 10-year-old 4th grader who attends Alameda
Elementary school in North East Portland where she lives with her parents and older sister. She
has no known learning, mental or physical disabilities. Natalie loves to read and was excited to
take the DIBLES (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy skill) assessment. When I asked
Natalie’s mom if it was all right if I gave the DIBLES assessment to Natalie, her mom thought
that it was a wonderful idea. According to Natalie’s mom, Natalie spends time reading every
day. When I arrived to the house, I was welcomed by both Natalie and her mom. I immediately
noticed that there were a lot of books in the house. Natalie was eager to begin the assessment.
Observation during the assessment: Once we sat down, I carefully explained that I was
going to give Natalie three passages to read. She seemed to have a clear understanding about
what the directions were and she gave good eye contact and nodded her head when I explained to
her what she was expected to do. During the assessment, I noticed how fluent Natalie was
reading. In fact, her reading speed was so fast that I thought she was going to read ahead of me
tracking her What else I noticed was that whenever there was a word that Natalie didn’t know
right away, she was able to self-correct immediately without my help. After the time was up, I
ask Natalie to tell me how much she remembered from each reading. When Natalie told me what
she remembered, I noticed how she didn’t just tell me the main story but also many of the details.
Natalie was motivated to read Benchmark 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3. Of the three the readings, her
Summary of assessments and scores: Benchmark readings of 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3, were given.
Natalie’s scores were 148, 181, and 187. Natalie K ‘s median score was 181, WCPM with 100
percent accuracy with two self-corrections. According to DIBELS Risk level chart grades 4-5,
she scored at the LR (low risk) at grade level. See chart below for more information.
Conclusion after assessment: Natalie is reading at a high 4th grade Oral Reading Fluency
level. She appears to have good comprehension. My recommendation is that Natalie needs more
of a higher reading level and books that can give her more of a reading challenge. Some books
that I that believe would be good for Natalie would be mystery, science, history, and English
novels like Emily Dickason and Edgar Allan Poe. Not only will these kinds of books will
pervade her a challenge, but it will also take her reading skills to the next level.
