ActiveScale™ P100 Installation Guide Document summary

1 Document summary
This chapter defines the scope of this document and provides a brief overview of the ActiveScale P100
system design.

1.1 Scope
This document contains the receiving, inspection, and installation instructions for the ActiveScale P100
system. The intended audience for this document includes the following individuals.
• Hardware installers and system administrators who install, configure, and maintain HGST ActiveScale
products.
• Shipping and receiving personnel who will receive and unpack the system.
• Site management who will oversee the integration of the product.

1.2 Product overview

The ActiveScale P100 is a modular object storage system that allows you to scale from 720TB (raw) to
multiple petabytes in a single namespace. The base configuration consists of 3 System Nodes, 6 Storage
Nodes, and 2 System Interconnects, and provides 720TB of raw storage capacity. Optionally scale-up kits
are available that consist of 6 Storage Nodes, adding 720TB of raw storage each. Up to two scale-up kits
can be added per base unit. In a multi-site deployment, all scale-up modifications must be implemented
identically at each geographical location.
The system can be expanded further by scaling out, increasing the overall capacity and performance by
joining a new ActiveScale P100 system to the existing system. In a multi-site deployment, all scale-out
modifications must be implemented identically at each geographical location.

ActiveScale™ P100 Installation Guide Pre-installation site requirements

2 Pre-installation site requirements

This chapter describes the tasks that are necessary to complete before the installation of the product, in
order to make the installation process as smooth and safe as possible.
Topics:
• Required equipment for installation on page 10
• Servicing space requirement on page 10
• Rack requirements on page 12
• PDU requirements on page 13
• Environmental considerations on page 14

2.1 Required equipment for installation

Before you begin the installation, ensure that you have the following items.
• Number 2 Phillips-head screwdriver with a 12" shaft. If using a torque screwdriver, set the torque to
212 in lb or 24 N-m for installing 1U and 3U mounting kits.
• Level.
• Anti-static mat or anti-static foam.
• A cart to hold components.
• Box cutter.
• Tape measure to check the rack size and walking path.

2.2 Servicing space requirement

The ActiveScale P100 system requires that enough space be available at the front and the rear of the
system to install and service system components. The front space requirement is based on the length of the
longest system component, plus the space necessary to fit a person servicing the system. The rear space
requirements is based on space a technician would need to service all of the parts at the rear of the unit.
Table 2-1. Space requirements
Specification Value
Minimum front of rack space 1220mm (48in.)
Minimum rear of rack space 560mm (22in.)

The following list contains other considerations that should be made for servicing the system:
• Mounting a PDU or other equipment vertically in the customer selected rack may impede the ability
of technicians to service system components. For example, because of the position of the PSUs
installed in the system servers, mounting a PDU or other equipment in this space may affect the
serviceability of that PSU.

2.2.1 Build space requirement

10
ActiveScale™ P100 Installation Guide Pre-installation site requirements

The ActiveScale P100 is designed to be delivered on multiple pallets and installed on site. Because of this,
it is important to be sure that enough space is available for the individuals that will build the system to
work. This section describes the space required during this build process.

• L—610 mm (L—24.4 in)
• H—44 mm (H—1.73 in)

Use the table above to come up with a plan to address how the system must be installed. The following is a
list of things to take into consideration to be successful during this process:
• Is there enough space to unpack all of the components of a single pallet or all pallets and store them
before installing them in the customer rack? If not, think about what the sequence of unpack and
installation that is required with the space given.
• While installing system components, there needs to be a minimum of 1220mm of space at the front of
the rack to allow for the space needed for the largest system component to be installed by two people.

11
ActiveScale™ P100 Installation Guide Pre-installation site requirements

If this room is not available in the location that the unit will operate, consider building the system
outside its operational location and moving it into location when finished.
• If the system will be moved after the system components are installed in the customer rack, be sure to
measure the size of the customer rack and check the walking path to make sure that the system will fit
as it moves through the deployment site.

Note: Before moving the system, verify that the rack can support the dynamic
load of the system weight during movement. For details, see Rack requirements
on page 12.

2.3 Rack requirements

The ActiveScale P100 system is designed to be integrated into the user's own rack mounting solution and
does not come installed in an HGST rack. Therefore, this section describes what is required of a rack
mounting solution in order to accommodate the physical dimensions and performance characteristics of the
product.

Note: All components fit into an ANSI/EIA-310-D-1992 19 in Rack with

1100mm minimum depth. Greatest component depth is 36 in (915 mm).

The following is considered best practice when choosing a rack mounting solution for the ActiveScale
P100:
• System dimension—Select a rack mounting solution that has the appropriate depth to accommodate
the 1U and 3U rail kits and the dimensions of the system components, including any rack-mounted
PDUs.
• System weight—Select a rack mounting solution that supports the static weight loads of a base
system, dynamic weight loads if the system needs to be moved, and the additional weight loads that
might be added later if the system is scaled up (in other words, the weight loads of additional Storage
Nodes). For details, see Dimensions and weights that affect rack selection on page 12.
• Mounting kits (rails) —Select a rack mounting solution that supports the properties of the 1U and 3U
mounting rail kits. For details, see Identifying the mounting kits on page 21.
• Cable management—The system is designed such that all of the cables are wired at the back of the
system. Be sure that the system cabling can be routed safely and efficiently through the selected route.
• Grounding—Ensure that the electrical components used to power the system can be grounded safely
and that the rack itself can also be grounded safely.
Use the following table to make determinations about your rack mounting solution:
Table 2-3. Dimensions and weights that affect rack selection

2.4 PDU requirements

Because the ActiveScale P100 does not come with its own power distribution unit (PDU), this section
provides information that is necessary when making the determination about selecting a PDU that will
effectively and safely support the power consumption of the system. The following table lists the power
specifications of the system.

Note: When using single phase PDUs to supply power to the system, the site
mains power must contain a breaker that is rated to support the system
configuration that is being powered. If the mains breaker cannot support single
phase power distribution, special considerations must be made to support the
electrical load of the system

2.4.2 Load balancing 3-phase PDUs

When selecting a PDU for use with the ActiveScale P100, it is important to consider how to balance the
electrical load of the system on the PDU to prevent damaging power equipment or the system itself.
When using a 3-Phase PDU with the ActiveScale P100, special consideration should be taken for how the
electrical loads will balance across the three phases.

2.5 Environmental considerations

Ensure that both the front and rear of the ActiveScale P100 stay clear of any materials that may block or
disrupt the airflow in any way. Disrupting the airflow can cause the system to overheat which may affect
performance or cause damage to the system.
The following rack airflow principles should be considered for best results:
• Controlled air conditioners that are functional and can sufficiently maintain specified system
operating temperatures should be located in the facility where the system will be installed.
• The airflow in and out of the equipment must not be restricted.
• If rack doors will be used, ensure that the solution used with the system does not prevent airflow from
the cold aisle from entering the system freely.

ActiveScale™ P100 Installation Guide System unpacking

3 System unpacking
This section provides descriptions of what to look for when inspecting the packaging during the unpacking
process.
Topics:
• Damaged packaging on page 16
• Unpacking process on page 16

3.1 Damaged packaging

The following are the most common ways a package can be damaged.
• Crushed corners are indicative of a package having been dropped.
• Split seams caused by excessive shearing force placed on the container.
• Punctures can be caused by a sharp object striking the packaging.
• Water damage happens when the package has come into contact with a water source or has been
stored in an overly humid environment.

3.2 Unpacking process

Note: Each system contains a packing slip. As you are unpacking, check the
items that you received against the packing slip.

This section provides an unpacking process that is sufficient to ensure that the system is unpacked
effectively and safely.
However, because the requirements of every data center or customer installation site will vary, it may be
advantageous to unpack and install the system in a slightly different sequence. If so, be sure that the
installation team has thoroughly reviewed and understands the information provided in this section and
follows all of safety and inspection steps.
Additionally, the unpacking process involves alternating unpacking and inspecting the packaging and
system components as they are unpacked. This sequence is designed to catch problems that could have
occurred during the packaging and shipping process to insure the system has arrived without damage. Pay
close attention to this sequence in order to find any problems.

3.2.1 Unpacking storage pallets and scale-up pallets

This section describes the steps that should be followed to unpack pallet one and inspect the product for
damage.
The ActiveScale P100 ships on two pallets. The boxes will be numbered based on the system component
they contain. The labels on the boxes and the top of the systems will list the full system name (for example,
Storage Node 3). The label that corresponds to the cabling map is on the back of the server (CN3) and will
correspond to the identifier listed in Cabling Map on page 29.

4 System hardware installation

The ActiveScale P100 system hardware does not come pre-installed in a rack, is not required to be
installed in a single rack, and does not come with a power distribution unit (PDU).
This is to allow users the flexibility to integrate this system into their own rack and power distribution
system.
Therefore, this section covers the installation of the system into a single rack. It addresses the design and
installation of the mounting kits, a recommended installation sequence, and the steps you should follow in
order to install each system component into your rack.
For guidance on selecting an appropriate rack solution, see Rack requirements on page 12.
For guidance on selecting an appropriate PDU, as well as information about how to manage system power
generally, see PDU requirements on page 13.

4.1 Mounting kit installation

This section provides an introduction to the mounting kits that come with ActiveScale P100. It explains the
differences between each kit and how to tell them apart, how to extend them, and important operational
features.

4.1.1 Identifying the mounting kits

There are three kinds of mounting kits:
• Storage Node mounting kit (1U)
• System Interconnect mounting kit (3U)
• System Node mounting kit (1U)
The following sections describe each mounting kit.

4.1.1.1 Storage Node mounting kit (1U)

These mounting kits are 1U in height and have “LEFT” and “RIGHT” stamped on the insides of the rails.

Important: If you need to install 3U rails, refer to the ActiveScale P100 5.1
Installation Guide. These instructions only apply to the 1U mounting kit.

4.1.1.2 System Interconnect mounting kit (3U)

These mounting kits are 3U in height, with support flanges and an adjustable bracket.

21
ActiveScale™ P100 Installation Guide System hardware installation

Figure 4-1. System Interconnect 3U mounting kit

The System Interconnect mounting kits have a stability bracket as shown in the following image.
Figure 4-2. System Interconnect 3U stability bracket (stability bracket noted in blue)

This bracket has a set of slots at the end as shown in the following image. These slots are designed to
receive a set of tabs that protrude from the back of the System Interconnect. This prevents the System
Interconnects from tilting or shifting during operation and maintenance. During the installation process, it
is important to fit the System Interconnects such that the tabs at the end are inserted in the slots at the end
of the bracket.
Each 3U mounting kit also comes with a set of washer plates that are used to secure the mounting brackets
to the rack posts. These washer plates come in two varieties: with standoffs or flush. The difference is
shown in the following image. The front view bracket uses 3 standoffs, the rear view bracket is flush.

Figure 4-3. 3U mounting kit stability slots

Each 3U mounting kit also comes with a set of washer plates that are used to secure the mounting brackets
to the rack posts. These washer plates come in two varieties: with standoffs or flush. Standoff washer plates
are installed in the front of the rack. Flush washer plates are installed in the rear of the rack.
The following image shows both washer types and their general placement in the rack. The standoff
washer plate appears on the left. The flush washer plate appears on the right. Note that the chamfered holes
face outwards so the mounting screws will sit flush.

6. With the System Node inserted fully into the rack, screw the thumb screws on the front of the system
into the System Node.
7. Repeat the unpacking and installation steps for each of the other five System Nodes.

Important: Rack the System Nodes from bottom to top.

4.1.2.2 Installing the System Interconnects and mounting kits (3U)

1. Locate a System Interconnect mounting kit. These mounting kits are 3U in height.
2. Make sure all of the parts necessary to install the 3U Mounting Kit are present.
– 2 3U Brackets
– 8 M5 Screws
– 4 Washer Plates
3. Gather the mounting screws, washer plates, and a Phillips head screw driver and have them within
reach while installing the 3U mounting kits. It will be necessary to hold the mounting bracket being
installed with one hand while installing the washer plates and screws with the other if one person is
installing the kits.
4. Collect a single bracket and extend it fully.

Caution: If performing this task alone is too difficult or unsafe because of the
circumstances of the build, get another person to assist with the installation by
supporting the 3U mounting kit at the rear of the rack while it is being secured to
the front. This will prevent it from falling while it is being installed.

5. From the front of the rack, lead the pegged end of the mounting bracket into the rack, sliding the pegs
into the mounting holes on the posts at the rear of the rack. This will provide the necessary support to
be able to hold the bracket with one hand while the other hand is used to install the washer plates and
screws on the front of the rack.

Note: Make sure that the mounting bracket is attached to the correct side of the
rack. The support flanges that the components will lie on should be facing toward
the inside of the rack. The support flanges should be aligned to the bottom of each
U space. If the brackets are flipped, the washer plates will not install smoothly.

6. With the pegs inserted at the rear of the rack, slowly and carefully collapse the fully extended bracket
until the screw holes on the bracket are flush behind the mounting holes on the front rack posts.
7. Hold the bracket flush with the mounting holes on the rack stems at the U level it will be installed at.
With the hand that is free, pick up the washer plate and align it flush with the rack post such that the

28
ActiveScale™ P100 Installation Guide System hardware installation

top screw hole is aligned with the holes on the rack post and the mounting bracket, then use the hand
holding the mounting bracket and pinch all of these parts together, sandwiching the rack post between
them and once again freeing the other hand.
8. Grab one of the M5 screws and start screwing it into the top mounting hole until it is finger tight. This
will be enough to support the mounting bracket which will allow you to release your hand.
9. Finish securing the washerplate to the front of the rack with another M5 screw inserted into the
bottom screw hole.
10. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to tighten the screws.
11. Use a level to ensure the mounting bracket is level. If it is not, retry mounting the bracket.
12. Move to the rear of the rack and install a flush washer plate to the rear of the rack. The screws should
be installed in the placement shown in the following image.
Figure 4-9. Flush washer placement rear

13. Complete this sequence for the other mounting bracket on the opposite side of the rack. Make sure the
second bracket is installed at the same U height on the rack posts as the first.
14. From the front of the rack, orient the System Interconnect so that the 48 network ports are facing
toward the back of the rack.
15. Align the first System Interconnect with the bottom row of the 3U mounting bracket and slide the
System Interconnect into the 3U rail kit until it stops.
16. Move to the rear of the rack and make sure that the metal tabs on the System Interconnect are inserted
into the slots on the rear of the mounting kit. If not, realign the System Interconnect until they can
mate properly.
Figure 4-10. Tabs inserted

29

Important: Plug the System Interconnects in before fully securing them in the
rack. The plugs might become obscured by the blanking panels after installation.

17. From the front of the rack, secure the System Interconnect using the blanking plates that screw into
the mounting kit.
18. Install the second System Interconnect in the top row of the 3U mounting kit in the same way that the
first was installed.

4.1.2.3 Installing the Storage Nodes and mounting kits (1U)

5 System cabling
This section instructs the user on how to read cable labels and where to install cables into components
within the system.
Topics:
• User provided cables on page 33
• How to read cable labels on page 33
• Cabling map on page 34
• Installing an additional system (scaling out) on page 38

5.1 User provided cables

To connect to the public network, the customer must provide networking cables that are compatible with
the SFP+ transceivers that are installed in the rear of each System Node. The transceivers require a multi-
mode, duplex, fiber optic cable (50/125) with an LC connector at the appliance end of the cable. The fiber
type of the cable will depend on the length of cable required. Use the following table for reference

Note: The rack to rack cable must be an OM3 MPO Type-B female to female
cable. If rack to rack connectivity uses the customer infrastructure, Type-A,
Type-B, or Type-C cables may be required.

Table 5-1. User provided cable length required

Length needed to reach site network in meters Fiber type needed
up to 300 OM3 MPO Multi-mode fiber
up to 400 OM4 MPO Multi-mode fiber
>400 Contact HGST support for options.

5.2 How to read cable labels

The ActiveScale P100 system comes with the necessary network cables to connect the system components.
This section provides an explanation of the labels that come attached to the cables and how to use them to
connect the system components.
Each cable label is broken into two parts separated by a colon which refer to the two system components
being connected to one another with the cable. Furthermore, each side of the colon is broken into two parts;
the part on the left side of the period refers to the system component, while the part on the right hand side
of the period refers to the port on that component. For example, the following image is an example of a
cable label.
Figure 5-1. Cable label

33
ActiveScale™ P100 Installation Guide System cabling

On the left side of the colon, CN6 refers to the sixth Storage Node and N4 refers to the fourth network port
on that Storage Node. On the right side of the colon, SW2 refers to the second System Interconnect, and 12
refers to the twelfth port on that System Interconnect. Therefore, this cable label is instructing the user to
use this cable to connect the networking port 4 on the sixth Storage Node to the twelfth port on the second
System Interconnect.
To find the correct location of the ports identified on the cable labels, use the following diagrams.
Figure 5-2. Components and port identification

5.3 Cabling map

The following table and cabling diagram provide the information needed to connect the cable to the correct
component.

share the same speed and duplex settings. This mode requires a switch that supports IEEE
802.3ad Dynamic Link.
• bond-mode 6 (ALB - Active Load Balancing): includes transmit load balancing (balance-tlb)
and receive load balancing (rlb) for IPv4 traffic. Receive load balancing is achieved by ARP
negotiation. The bonding driver intercepts the ARP replies sent by the server on their way out
and overwrites the source hardware address with the unique hardware address of one of the
slaves in the bond such that different clients use different hardware addresses for the server.
c. Enter a Link Monitoring Interval (in milliseconds).

6.4.1 Additional setup for a multi-site deployment

6.4.1.1 Obtain cables and transceivers
Obtain or confirm that you have all parts required, as listed in the table below:
• Transceivers listed are shown with a part number you must purchase for each system. Purchase the
part number specified for your chosen uplink mode. Part numbers correspond to upgrade kits.
• Cables are customer-supplied and must be LC to LC multi- mode fiber optic patch cable (LC multi-
mode 50/125mm MMF OM3 or OM4 10Gb laser optimized fiber). These cables must comply with
the Ethernet 10GBASE-SR standard. Ensure that, for the cable type chosen, you do not exceed the
specified maximum 10GBASE-SR cable length. For example, do not exceed a length of 400m if you
are using 10G OM4 multi-mode cables.

6.4.1.2 Configure the System Interconnects for your chosen uplink mode
If you want an uplink mode other than mode 1 (the default), contact HGST Support to configure the
System Interconnects on all your systems.

Important: This is an irreversible procedure and must be done by HGST

Support before initial bringup (in other words, before running the configuration
wizard).

6.4.1.3 Create the required networks at each site

It is your responsibility to configure your network/WAN, with however many levels of redundancy and/or
physical paths that you need, as long as you implement the following networks at each site:
• SiteN_SystemNetwork1
• SiteN_SystemNetwork2
• SiteN_Column1_StorageNetwork1
• SiteN_Column1_StorageNetwork2
• For ActiveScale P100 with Column 2:
– SiteN_Column2_StorageNetwork1

62

– SiteN_Column2_StorageNetwork2
• For ActiveScale P100 with Column 3:
– SiteN_Column3_StorageNetwork1
– SiteN_Column3_StorageNetwork2

Tip: There are four, six, or eight networks required at each site for ActiveScale
P100, depending on the number of Columns each ActiveScale P100 has.

Figure 6-28. A multi-site ActiveScale P100 system

6.4.1.4 Check data paths and latency

Your network/WAN infrastructure must ensure that the maximum round trip time (RTT) between each site
is no more than 200ms.
Using your settings for SiteN_SystemNetwork1 and SiteN_SystemNetwork2, run the following tests
in both directions against all three sites; in other words:
• From site 1 to site 2: The .110 network be connected to the .120 network.
• From site 1 to site 3: The .110 network be connected to the .130 network.
• From site 2 to site 1: The .120 network be connected to the .110 network.
• From site 2 to site 3: The .120 network be connected to the .130 network.

63
ActiveScale™ P100 Installation Guide Initial system bringup

• From site 3 to site 2: The .130 network be connected to the .120 network.
• From site 3 to site 1: The .130 network be connected to the .110 network.
1. Configure a computer with an IP address in the network's range.
2. Verify the data paths and latency using ping.
Confirm that are no lost packets and that the latency is consistent and as expected.

Warning: Do not assume that if site A can reach site B, that means site B can
reach site A, or that the bandwidth and latency values in both directions are the
same.

Sample ping command from site A to site B:

ping -c 25 -t network_interface site_B_gateway_IP_address
Sample expected output:
64 bytes from 192.168.1.254: icmp_req=1 ttl=64 time=0.274 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.254: icmp_req=2 ttl=64 time=0.194 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.254: icmp_req=3 ttl=64 time=0.255 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.254: icmp_req=4 ttl=64 time=0.208 ms

6.4.1.5 Create uplinks

Connect transceivers to specific System Interconnect uplink ports, depending on your chosen uplink mode,
and connect cables from these transceivers to your corresponding network, at each site. For uplink ports
and connections, refer to the table below.
• For uplink mode 1 (2-4 individual 10G access ports (48,47,46,45) per System Interconnect):
– Connect transceivers to ports 48 and 47 on each System Interconnect, on each system, at each site.
– (For ActiveScale P100 with Column 2): Connect transceivers to port 46 on each System
Interconnect, on each system, at each site.
– (For ActiveScale P100 with Column 3): Connect transceivers to port 45 on each System
Interconnect, on each system, at each site.
• For uplink mode 2 (one 10G trunk port (48) per System Interconnect):
– Connect transceivers to port 48 on each System Interconnect, on each system, at each site.
• For uplink mode 3 (one 40G trunk port (50) per System Interconnect):
– Connect transceivers to port 50 on each System Interconnect, on each system, at each site.
• For uplink mode 4 (three 10G trunks ports (48,47,46) with LACP per System Interconnect):
– Provide non-conflicting VLAN IDs and configure your respective switch ports for LACP.
– Connect transceivers to ports 48, 47, and 46 on each System Interconnect, on each system, at each
site.
• For uplink mode 5 (two 40G trunks ports (52,50) with LACP per System Interconnect):
– Provide non-conflicting VLAN IDs and configure your respective switch ports for LACP.
– Connect transceivers to ports 52 and 50 on each System Interconnect, on each system, at each site.

6.4.2 Multi-site pre-login configuration

The pre-login configuration wizard connects the System Networks at all three sites.
At each site, the configuration wizard prompts you for the local network settings you predetermined
through your ActiveScale P100 Site Survey. Please have this document available for your reference. Each
site must use the same [multi-site] ActiveScale P100 Site Survey. After verifying network settings, the
configuration wizard running at the primary site communicates with the secondary sites through their
System Network 1 IP addresses and orchestrates the overall configuration process. You can designate any
site as the primary site.
You can have a system administrator present at each site concurrently, or you can run the configuration
wizard sequentially at each secondary site and then lastly at the primary site. The disadvantage of the
second approach is that if there is a mistake at a secondary site, you have to go back onsite to fix it.

Tip: Pre-login configuration takes a minimum of 12 hours.

65
ActiveScale™ P100 Installation Guide Initial system bringup

Important: The systems at all sites must be completely powered on at this point.

Important: The 10GbE cables from SFP+ ports 1 and 3 on each System Node
must not be connected to your network(s) at this point, to avoid possible IP
conflicts.

Tip: All fields in the pre-login configuration wizard are mandatory unless
otherwise noted.

Warning: Do not use your web browser's Back or Forward buttons to navigate
through the wizard.

1. At each site, configure a connection to the default link local IP address of the eth2 network interface
on the first (lowest) System Node (System Node 1).

Important: The ActiveScale OS supports system-wide and object-level

encryption by generating encryption keys based on a Master Encryption
Phrase you specify. Encryption is an option that may be unavailable in certain
countries. Best practice is to specify a Master Encryption Phrase whether or
not you can enable encryption, and to save a copy of this phrase offline.

Important: The Master Encryption Phrase can be any length and can contain
any special character except spaces. Once the post-login configuration wizard
completes, you can no longer change the Master Encryption Phrase.

Important: The HGST Support Passcode is your portion of the two-factor

password for the hgstsupport user. It is limited to 20 characters. You can
change it at any time to allow/deny access to your system by HGST Support.
