Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Crunching The Numbers

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 3rd
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE3.OA.1 Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the
total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each.

Technology Standard Addressed: 5: Computational Thinker

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): Kahoot.com

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Students who have not yet grasped the concept yet or still struggle will
be partnered up with students who are already excelling in the subject. They will also be given slightly easier
questions that are still challenging for the level they are at. For someone with a physical disability, they can
also be partnered with someone who is capable of handling the iPad.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity. Prior to the student response activity, we will begin the lesson with a game where students
will partner up and work on their multiplication skills through flash cards for about 5 – 10 minutes.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: During the student response activity, the
teacher will bring up the Kahoot created for the lesson. The students will respond to the questions using
iPads. The teacher will monitor the students and be looking for problems that the majority of the class may
struggle with to go over later as a class.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

Student Response and Assessment Tools

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not? I will show the results of the problems that most people got wrong so that as a class we can
solve them together as a class.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? After the student response activity, the students will
participate in a game where a foam ball is passed around the class and whoever catches the ball has to
answer the flash card. If they get it right, they get to pass it to whoever they want. We will play that for about
10-15 minutes.

How will the data be used? The data will be used as a checkpoint of sorts in the middle of the lesson to
determine the level of understanding that the class is at. It is an assessment only for the teacher to view as
where to go next in the lesson and the level of difficulty of the problems that need to be used for the rest of
the lesson. It will only be for the teacher’s eyes and can be used to start a discussion on questions missed by
the majority of the class if the teacher chooses to show them that information.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. I am trying a game where students throw things for the
first time. I think that it can be very rewarding to students though and is a great way to get them moving and
engaged in the lesson in a way that they can relate. I’ve also never done a student response activity but I
think that being able to use technology can be very rewarding. The Kahoot being timed is also motivation for
the students to think quickly on their feet.

Reflective Practice: I could enhance the students learning impact by participating in the lesson that
incorporates the teachers Kahoot and they then create their own assessment using Kahoot or any other
student response tool that is approved by the teacher. The entire class can have a tournament where they
take everyone’s assessment that they created and whichever the class likes the best can be posted onto a
safe site or talked about on the school morning news.
