Span Direction
• Grating and expanded metal have to be supported in a specific way. The direction that the load bars run is the
important direction for grating and is referred to as the span.
• For expanded metal the span is in the direction of the strands or Long Way Mesh (LWM).
• Span is always the last dimension given when referencing a panel size.
• Grating and expanded metal have to be supported 90° to the span direction and do not require support on the
other sides.

FEATURES/BENEFITS
Expanded metal is one continuous single sheet of mesh The high strength to weight ratio makes it suitable for many
produced when a flat metal plate is sheared and stretched but industrial and ornamental applications.
is left intact at the ‘knuckles’. It is available in a variety of
thicknesses with differing sizes and designs of the apertures. No loose strands or welds means minimal deterioration from
constant exposure or movement.
The strands and knuckles are set at a uniform angle to the
plane of the sheet. This adds strength and rigidity and A further feature is the provision of an excellent anti-slip
distributes the load to the supporting frames. surface. This makes the product suitable for ramps (e.g. inclined
walkways adjacent to conveyors) platforms and stair treads.
Because there are no welds or joins it operates as a structural
member that distributes loads evenly over a wide area. The open nature of the product provides good visibility through
the mesh as well as the easy passage of air and sound whilst
ensuring security and protection.

WELDING
Webforge believe that welding to the support structure is a suitable process. Minimum number of welds is four per panel.
Grating: Weld 5mm fillet 25mm long at 1000mm centres. Expanded Mesh: Weld every fourth strand.
CLIP FREQUENCY
Nominal 4 per panel.
(Approximately 3 per M2 where span is > 1500mm. Approximately 5 per M2 where span is > 750mm or less.)
Fixing clips are not generally recommended in areas of vibration or where lateral loads are applied to the grating.
