K 224: Individual Dance Lesson Plan

● Demonstrates correct rhythm pattern for a different dance form from among folk,
social, creative, line and world dance. (S1.M1.7)
● Demonstrates correct technique for a variety of skills in 1 self-selected individual-

● Participates in a variety of aerobic fitness activities such as cardio-kick, step aerobics and
aerobic dance. (S3.M3.6)
Cognitive
● Identifies barriers related to maintaining a physically active lifestyle and seeks solutions
for eliminating those barriers. (S3.M1.7)

● Exhibits responsible social behaviors by cooperating with classmates, demonstrating
inclusive behaviors, and supporting classmates. (S4.M1.7)

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
FUNDAMENTAL and/or DANCE MOVEMENTS: Squats, push ups, lunges, side lunges,
jumping jacks, side bends, v-sit crunches, etc.

SOCAL OR ACADEMIC FOCUS: The social and academic focus for this dance is for
students to learn that fitness is not necessarily weightlifting or playing sports, and can
be found through many different practices such as dance. Another focus of this activity
is to teach exercises that do not require any equipment and can be done almost
anywhere.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED: MP3 Player (Phone, iPod or iPad), speaker

MUSIC: Burn by Ellie Goulding, YMCA (Single Version) by Village People, Mirrors by Justin
Timberlake

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS:
● Proper footwear
● Appropriate spacing (arms width apart)
● Free flowing clothes allowing for movement
● All students facing the same direction at any given time
● Restriction to one area of the gym floor

ORGANIZATION OF STUDENTS:
The students will be separated into two or three lines with plenty of space on all four sides of
every student. The teacher will stand at the front of the group directing the dance and playing
the music.

DIRECTIONS:
Warm-Up (Burn by Ellie Goulding) (0:00 – 2:10)
 2x8 count feel out the music
 4x Reach up and down to toes and hold
 8x Slide through arms alternating sides
 1x Right arm out, left arm out, right arm up, left arm up
 2x3 arm circles above head
 4x Punch right hand up to left, left hand up to right, right hand down to left, left hand
down to right
 8x arm circles forwards, 8x backwards
 2x neck rolls right, 2x left
 16x lunges (2 each time)
 1x Right arm out, left arm out, right arm up, left arm up
 2x3 arm circles
 4x Punch right hand up to left, left hand up to right, right hand down to left, left hand
down to right
 8x Slide through arms alternating sides

 3x8 count “warm-up”, feeling the beat out
 3x8 count squats on every other beat
 8 count break to change positions (get on floor)
 3x8 count supermans on every other beat
 8 count break to get back up
 5 beat cross punches (left up right, right up left, left down right, right down left, out)
 2x Classic YMCA Dance (make letter shapes with arms)
 Jumping Jacks with clap above head between “YMCA” chorus

 Jumping Jacks with clap
 3x8 Jumping lunges every other beat
 8 count break to change positions
 3x8 count v-sit crunches
 8 count to change positions
 5 beat cross punches

 4x Arms up and down with deep breaths in and out every 4 beats
 16x slide with arm circle
 16x right and left toe touches (alternating every 2)

 12x “draw the bow” move, alternating sides
 6x side bends (4 counts each side)
 1x Arms up and down with deep breath

CUES:
 Fly like superman (supermans)
 Imagine you are the letter (for YMCA letters)
 Closing like a suitcase (v-sits)
 Drawing a bow (drawing bow move)

EXTENSIONS/ADAPTATIONS/MODIFICATIONS:
● Have the teacher name each movement
● Put the students in a large circle
● Make it a partner dance and show the alterations for the other partner
● Rotate rows after learning each step or between verses
