Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $
and ¢ symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many
cents do you have?
I would use this video to teach my students the coin song. We would sing it every
day during the unit to help memorize the values of the coins as we learned how to
identify each coin, and the strategies necessary to add the coins. Although the provided
standard is the only standard for early childhood education in the ACF addressing dollar
and coin counting, this song would be appropriate beginning in Kindergarten, prior to 2nd
grade. It is important to understand where students are going in order to prepare them for
the proceeding grades. Students should begin to develop money sense beginning in
Kindergarten so that they understand the value of money as they develop and begin
studying the more complex mathematic concepts as it relates to money (adding,
subtracting with decimals, real-world application, etc.) Therefore, in order for students to
solve word problems including dollar bills and coins, students must first understand the
value to each of these units. A number of activities could be used to integrate this content
as it relates to Kindergarten standards. For example, as this content relates to the National
Standards of Economics.
