Summary:

William McComas asserts that an understanding of the Nature of Science (NOS) is the most
crucial step in order to have a population of scientifically literate citizens. Hence, schools and
teachers should utilize a NOS curriculum in order to lay the foundation for a scientific
understanding. Furthermore, teachers should be exposed to NOS in their studies in order to fully
understand how to properly implement in when they begin teaching. It is shown that neither
science coursework nor research strongly supports a good understanding of the NOS principles.
Therefore, McComas argues that teachers should be given a proper understanding and
implementation of the NOS curriculum starting with their own studies in order to fully benefit
their future students.

Summary:

Genomic sequencing has allowed scientists from all fields to come together to
acknowledge the universal library of genes and proteins. Recent advances in technology have
allowed for the sequencing of complete genomes and the comparison of these genomes between
species. This comparison resulted in an unexpected amount of overlap. The Gene Ontology (GO)
consortium is a new project that was created to explore our understanding of the genes and how
they work. The GO covers three components: biological process, molecular function, and the
cellular component. An example of something the GO would cover would be cellular
metabolism. This is a process carried out by most cells in a largely shared genetic component.
Studying metabolism in fruit flies would in turn give a great understanding of the processes in
humans.
