Which, when played alone on a guitar, sounds passable. The trouble is, the recording that we all know so well has Pete
playing (A) (G) (D). And the Anthology has helpfully added the tablature for such an odd chord as E-flat to look like this:
3
Eb
What the fu– ? But wait! There's more help! Here's a B-flat:
o
Bb
It's almost as though it was written by a music theorist and not a musician. So the song, according to Warner Bros.
Publications, looks like this:
F Eb Bb
"We'll be (F) fighting in the streets- (Eb) (Bb) with our (F) children at our feet (Eb) (Bb) …"
And if you practice long and hard, you can get these chords down right. Then, the next time it comes on the radio, you can
play along. What? It doesn't sound the same? They aren't the right chords? Why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why,
why? And how can the published music from the owners of the copyrighted song be so wrong? One might think that Warner
Bros. deliberately provided the wrong transcription. But they wouldn't do that. Would they? I mean, they wouldn't do that.
I still own The Who Anthology, and the correct chords for this song are frustratingly penciled in above the wrong, wrong,
wrong ones, but in my quest for honest transcriptions of songs, I discovered that most music books either fake the chords or
are so wrong, they obfuscate the true chords.
So, even though I took the trouble and money to buy song books, the music in them still forced me back to headphones
plugged into a CD player and hours trying to distinguish an A from an A-major 7 amidst a cacophony of instruments and
percussion.
Fake Books
And "Fake" books don't help anyone either. Who wants to know how to fake a song? Don't you want to know how to play it -
not fake it? If you want a real fake book, I'll save you time and money: All songs ever written can be faked by playing G, C,
and D. Now, aren't you glad you didn't pay $30 for the "Ultimate Fake Book"?
Hence, Songenborscht, where fake chords are banished and the truest renditions have been painstakingly verified and re-
verified to faithfully reproduce each song as close as possible to the original recording, within reason, with no guarantee.
Requirements
Songenborscht assumes that:
• You know the song you want to play. If you've never heard of a song, good luck finding the melody, tempo, and so
on. I suggest listening to the song or playing along with it in order to learn it best.
• You know basic chords. By basic chords, I mean any major or minor chord. I don't graphically illustrate what an F
looks like; I assume you know. Any chord that requires a number after it (e.g., Gmaj7) is graphically illustrated.
• Although not a requirement, you will begin to memorize the chord structures. So when you see a Dm7, you know
where your fingers should be on the fretboard.
Capos
Many artists use capos or play their songs in a higher octave on the piano. In these cases, I have provided the capo version of
a song. Some songs also are much easier to play using a capo. In these cases, I have included both the capo version (easy
version) and the non-capo version (original version). Every attempt has been made to make every song as easy to play as
possible, while retaining the true and original chords.
Tablature
Anyone who's ever gone to a tablature web site knows how horrific the tabs are there. In the beginning, I attempted to use the
freely available tabs on the Internet as a foundation for a song, but I quickly found that it was much more difficult to fix a
wrong song than just to build it from scratch. (Allow me to reiterate, again, once more, that I didn't use any publications or
copyrighted materials as a foundation for this publication.) I even uploaded corrections for a few horrendously wrong tabs to
one or two popular tab web sites, but I'm afraid the damage is done. Very rarely can you find a tab that is spot-on. Some are
passable. Most are crap.
Song Selection
The songs included in Songenborscht were arbitrarily chosen, based upon my musical preferences, requests, and playability.
Some songs sound terrible played on a guitar and should never be attempted, regardless of the tabs available for them. For
example, anything by Queen played solo on a guitar lacks the overdubbing that makes Queens songs good. Subsequently,
Bohemian Rhapsody, played solo on an acoustic, would sound like nonsense, unless you're some kind of guitar god like
Steve Vai, who plays in instrument that looks like a guitar but sounds like a freakin' five-piece band.
Most of the selected songs can reasonably be played by an acoustic, steel-string guitar.
Some notable song exceptions include all the songs everybody knows, such as anything by Led Zeppelin and or Lynyrd
Skynyrd. If you need help playing Sweet Home Alabama, you need to work on your fake chords (see Fake Books above).

Easiest Songs
Here's a list of the easiest songs in the book for those of you who haven't had much time on the guitar lately.
Published anthologies, collected works, fake books and the like have asked for and received copyright permission for each
and every song in their publication. Some companies simply won't allow any music books to use their songs, which explains
why you can't buy one book that has all your favorite songs in it.
Currently, there is some grey area regarding the fair use of by-ear transcriptions. Lawyers love grey areas. The Internet web
site, Olga (http://www.olga.net) is a tablature site that has had warnings by the corporate music lawyers but has yet to find
themselves in court. In 1998, Olga actually shut down its web site for a time due to legal threats from the Harry Fox Agency,
the legal arm of the National Music Publishers Association. To find the copyrights to a large number of songs, you can search
the nifty NMPA song copyright list at http://www.songfile.com.
I seek no profit from this publication; I only wish to share my many, many hours of work with other musicians. I didn't use
any publications or copyrighted materials as a foundation for this publication. This publication is my own painful, time-
consuming work and represents my best guess of the songs. Anyone using this publication is restricted to using it for private
study, kindling, proving other guitarists wrong, swatting flies, scholarship, research, megaphone, chair booster, or a make-
believe telescope.
Title 17
United States copyright code, Title 17, allows the public to use copyrighted material for "fair use". Specifically, copyrighted
material may be used "for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for
classroom use), scholarship, or research" (http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html#107). This publication falls under the
"scholarship" and "research" area of the law.
While I attempted to find the actual chords used by the musicians in their work, I can make no guarantee that the chords I
chose are correct. In fact, I'd like to admit right here that this publication is a worthless collection of hacked music with
questionable integrity. I don't think anyone should use this to learn music; you should go out and buy the real, reputable
music books published by their copyright holders and licensed affiliates and stop wasting your time reading this.

(G) Against the (Bm) wind, (C) we were runnin’ against the (G) wind.
We were (C) young and (Bm) strong.
We were (Am) runnin’ a- (C) gainst the (G) wind.
(G) And the years rolled slowly past, (Bm) and I found myself alone.
(C) Surrounded by strangers I (G) thought were my friends.
I (D) found myself further and (C) further from my home, and I
(G) Guess I lost my way. (Bm) There were oh so many roads.
I was (C) livin’ to run and (G) runnin’ to live.
Never (C) worried about payin’ or even (D) how much I owed.
Movin’ (Em) eight miles a (D) minute for months at a (G) time,
Breakin’ (Em) all of the (C) rules that would (G) bend.
I be- (Em) gan to (D) find myself (C) searchin’,
(C) Searchin’ for shelter a- (D) gain and again.
(G) Against the (Bm) wind, little (C) somethin’ against the (G) wind.
I (C) found my- (Bm) self seekin’ (Am) shelter a- (C) gainst the (G) wind.
Well those (Em) drifter’s (D) days are past me (G) now.
I’ve got (Em) so much (C) more to think a- (G)bout.
(Em) Dead lines and com- (D) mitments, (C) what to leave in, (D) what to leave out.
(G) Against the (Bm) wind, (C) I’m still runnin’ against the (G) wind.
I’m (C) older (Bm) now but still (Am) runnin’ a- (C) gainst the (G) wind.
Well I’m (C) older (Bm) now and still (D) runnin’…

(A) Don't you think the (G) time is (D) right for (A) us to find (G) (D)
(A) All the things we (G) thought weren't (D) proper (A) could be right in time?

(A) Now it's come to (G) what you (D) want, you've (A) had your way (G) (D)
And (A) all the things (G) you thought be- (D) fore just (A) faded into gray
And can you (D) see

If it's (C) one of us I'm sure we'll both will (E) see
[Won't you look at me and tell me?]

(A) Al- (E) ison, (A) my (B) aim is (E) true
The (G) letter that you (D) wrote me made me (C) stop and wonder why (C7)
But I (G) guess you felt like you (D) had to set things (C) right
(G) Just remember (D) this, my girl, when you (C) look up in the sky
You can (G) see the stars and (D) still not see the (C) light [that’s right]

1. Originally, the line was "And I served on the Danville train". Joan rewrote a few lines of J. R. Robertson’s tune. The melody changed also. Originally,
the chords were (C) (Am) (G) (Dm), and all the "Na, na, nas" were "La, la, las".
2. Originally, "Till Stoneman’s cavalry came".
3. Originally, "By May tenth, Richmond had fell".
4. Originally, "One day she called to me".
5. Originally, "I will work the land".
6. Originally, "Like my brother above me".

It was the (B7) third of June, another (F#dim) sleepy, dusty Delta (B7) day
I was (B7) out choppin' cotton and my (F#dim) brother was bailin' (B7) hay B9
And at (E7) dinner time we stopped and walked back to the house to eat
And Mama (B7) hollered out the back door "y'all remember to wipe your feet" x o x
And then she (E7) said "I got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge"
"Today (B7) Billy Joe MacAllister jumped (A7) off the Tallahatchie (B7) Bridge" (B9) (B7)
And (B7) Papa said to Mama as he (F#dim) passed around the blackeyed (B7) peas B7
"Well, Billy Joe never had a lick of sense, (F#dim) pass the biscuits, (B7) please"
"There's (E7) five more acres in the lower forty I've got to plow" x x
And Mama (B7) said it was shame about Billy Joe, anyhow
Seems like (E7) nothin' ever comes to no good up on Choctaw Ridge
And now (B7) Billy Joe MacAllister's jumped (A7) off the Tallahatchie (B7) Bridge (B9) (B7)
F#dim
And (B7) Brother said he recollected when (F#dim) he and Tom and Billie (B7) Joe
Put a (B7) frog down my back at the (F#dim) Carroll County picture (B7) show
o o o o
And wasn't (E7) I talkin' to him after church last Sunday night?
"I'll have (B7) another piece of apple pie, you know it don't seem right"
"I (E7) saw him at the sawmill yesterday on Choctaw Ridge"
"And now you (B7) tell me Billie Joe's jumped (A7) off the Tallahatchie (B7) Bridge" (B9) (B7) E7
And Mama (B7) said to me, (F#dim) "Child, what's happened to your appe- (B7) tite?"
"I've been (B7) cookin' all morning and you (F#dim) haven't touched a single (B7) bite" x o o o
"That (E7) nice young preacher, Brother Taylor, dropped by today"
"Said he'd be (B7) pleased to have dinner on Sunday, oh, by the way"
"He (E7) said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge"
A7
"And she and (B7) Billy Joe was throwing somethin' (A7) off the Tallahatchie (B7) Bridge" (B9) (B7)
A (B7) year has come an' gone since we (F#dim) heard the news 'bout Billy (B7) Joe
And (B7) Brother married Becky Thompson; they (F#dim) bought a store in Tupe- (B7) lo
There was a (E7) virus going 'round, Papa caught it, and he died last Spring
And now (B7) Mama doesn't seem to wanna do much of anything
And (E7) me, I spend a lot of time pickin' flowers up on Choctaw Ridge
And drop them (B7) into the muddy water (A7) off the Tallahatchie (B7) Bridge (B9) (B7)

Note: This is by no means an easy song to play, simply because you're changing chords on almost every beat; sometimes twice each beat, as you do with
”(C) help (C/B) me (Am7) place (G) this call," and sometimes four chords in one beat, as in "(C)-(C/B)-(Am7)-(G)." To make it easier, you could omit a
few chords, but then you wouldn't be playing it the way Jim does.

*This truely is the way it's played, however, it sounds better if you add the bass notes while you play unless you have a bassist.
*The song actually has the capo on fret 4 with the corresponding chords in that key, but in order to hit the E-bass notes (D-bass on fret 4, which is really an
F#), it sounds better on fret 2 when playing it solo.

* According to straightdope.com, "space cowboy", "gangster of love", and "Maurice" refer to earlier Miller songs. Miller's song, Enter Maurice also spoke
of the "pompitous of love". Miller used several lines from old blues artists, including those refering to the "pompitous of love", which can be traced to
Vernon Green, a member of an R&B group, The Medallions. When Green was 14, he invented a secret, paper-doll fantasy woman, whom he named a"
puppetute". He later used the words "puppetute" and "pismotality" in the Medallions song, The Letter. According to Green, "pismotality" describes words of
such secrecy that you only speak them to ones you love. Miller misheard these words as "pompitous" and "epismatology" and used them in Enter Maurice
and later The Joker.
Eeeee-awee-um-wom-aweh
Eeeee-awee-um-wom-aweh
*Originally written in 1939 by Solomon Linda, a Zulu migrant worker turned songwriter. Linda died penniless in 1962, having sold away the rights to the
song, originally titled "Mbube", to a South African publisher. It went on to generate an estimated $15 million in royalties after it was adapted by other artists,
including the American songwriter George Weiss, whose version is featured in Disney's "The Lion King." Linda's three surviving daughters and 10
grandchildren, living in poverty in the Johannesburg township of Soweto, have received only a one-time payment of $15,000.

Note: This is one of those songs that's a freakin' bitch to learn and takes lots of practice to get right, and if you don't practice it regularly, you won't retain it.
This is just Jim's part. Maury Muehleisen (who?) plays the lead. Maury never got much credit for his contribution to Jim's success, but his playing and
backup vocals are a critical component to Croce's music and not, as one writer has put it "filling in the open spots" in Croce's songs. Maury died in the same
plane crash as Jim.
