Grace Church Highlands – Annual Report for 2017

April 2018

2017 – a year of consolidation and spiritual growth for which we give great thanks to God.
‘Since you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right
hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things,’ Colossians 3v1-2

In a change to the normal format for the Annual Report, let me simply bring to you some of the
ongoing activities and highlights in the life and mission of Grace Church Highlands:

 Sunday services consistently attended by over 100-110 – as well as releasing and sending
off members to serve in different places. Last year we said farewell to a number of key
families – including the Sullivans, Parks, Mitchells, Hams, Phillips, Simpsons and
Andertons. Preaching on Jonah, The Reformation,
John’s gospel, Judges and the short NT Letters
 7 Branch Groups met during the year with over two-
thirds of adult members of the church family
connected with a group – looking at Jonah, Real
Prayer, Life Explored and Mark 1-8
 Evangelistic guest events included JustOne with JJohn
at The Emirates and an inaugural Christians in Sports
Quiz Evening
 Discipleship and training groups – Natural Evangelism, a Bible Overview, a Lent School
of Faith and a Summer Book Group
 Services at Elizabeth Lodge Care Home services have
continued to flourish with much spiritual fruit – regularly
attended by c15 residents and staf
 Community events included – Community cafés with the
Christmas café including a short carol service and talk for the
first time; Youth Football; English For You; Assemblies in
Grange Park school (with Pathway)
 Discipleship events included both a GCH Women’s Day (3rd-
4th March with Sarah Hall) and Men’s Day (6th-7th October with
Jonty Allcock) – both hosted at St Peter’s Church Hall
 The second year of the Street Party and service in the Village
Hall was another great success attended by many residents of Highlands Village
 Seasonal events provided the usual opportunities to serve others and reach out with the
gospel – at our Easter services; at Harvest
(with a collection for North Enfield
Foodbank); and at Christmas with good
numbers at Café Carols (175), Christmas Eve
Christingle (100) and Christmas Day (125) and
an autumn bookstall with 10ofThose.com
 We continued to support our Mission
Partners, Si and Pip Wilson and others, both
practically and in prayer
 This last year has seen a significant number of local
parishes ‘in vacancy’. We have helped at St Peter’s,
Christ Church Cockfosters and at St Thomas’ during
their recent interregna.
 B@SE and Good News Club continues to provide
essential discipleship for our young people. Many
teenagers attended CYFA and Pathfinder Ventures in
the summer and older members served as leaders and
helpers.
 A wonderful church Weekend Away (February 2018)
at Latimer Place – with over 130 church family attending with Chris Green from St James
Muswell Hill speaking on ‘Growing Spiritually’.

And none of this includes the often unseen and ongoing welcome, care, 1:1 pastoral work and
love shown for another and for others in response to God’s love for us that is a mark of Grace
Church Highlands as a church family.

Looking forward:
 Chris and Abi will be moving on from GCH at the end of June after 7 years. We wish
them all the very best as they begin a new chapter with Chris on the staff at Oak Hill
appointed as the inaugural ‘Mike Ovey Fellow’
 We will be looking at whether and when and in what capacity to take on an additional
member of staff
 The Bishop’s Mission Order is in the process of being renewed after 5 years. The
Archdeacon visited recently and confirmed that all is in order and seems to be working
well. He is particularly pleased to see the deepening of partnership links with St Peter’s
Grange Park since the appointment of Revd Stephen Coleman as vicar. We also look
forward to working with Revd Rich Alldritt and the church family at St Thomas’ following
his recent appointment

With thanks for your ongoing partnership in the gospel,

Yours in Christ,

Revd Andy Wadsworth April 2018
