Fourth Sunday of Easter
The Gospel this weekend is about sheep and their shepherd. Many of us who work in the Church spend a
significant amount of time reflecting on why and how people gather for church. What attracts people?
What repels people? What kinds of people are attracted to particular kinds of events? Of the people who
are attracted, what is their demographic?
One of the characteristics of the Shrine in 2018 is that we attract all walks of life: rich, poor, celebrities,
homeless, leaders in government and business, people who work in the trades, retired people with
fascinating biographies, immigrants, tourists, conservatives, liberals, the guilt-ridden, the mentally ill, and
the broken-hearted.
Religiously, we also have a mosaic of people. People come to pray for themselves and for others, for health,
for happiness, and for grand global causes like world peace and racial harmony. The Shrine welcomes
people here for the sacraments and the devotional life. We also welcome people who sometimes feel like
they are on the outside looking in, like the LGBTQ community and people who have suffered abuse by the
Church.
It’s a privilege to be on the altar looking out on the congregation. In a single Mass, it’s not at all unusual
for me to recognize an incredible combination of people who are at the Shrine because they feel the
attraction of Jesus Christ, and because friars and staff work hard to make this a welcoming space.
St. Francis Builds is part retreat, part mission trip where we reflect together on Franciscan values Franciscan values like
Solidarity with the Poor, Cross-Cultural Bridge-Building, Justice and Peace, Simplicity of Lifestyle, Community, Humility,
and Mission and then put them in to practice in giving a family a hand up in restoring their home.
Space is limited. No skills are needed, training provided. Cost is $950. Plus airfare. Ages 16 and up.
