member
The objective of this assignment was to find the real problems definition. We develop a
questionnaire to analyze some problems. We definition the real problem, we used many
technics such as dunker diagram, brainstorming, questionnaire, multi voting, boggle
method, present state\desired state, and statement and restatement. These assignments
help us to know what the world wants from us. We will continue to arrive our project.
1
The context :
This is the third assignment in IE201 section lap. We are required to make this assignment
because the students in this level in engineering do not know enough about manufacturing
which is a problem and we have made a duncker diagram as shown below in figure (1).
So, we are doing this part of assignment L3 as the first step to make us know enough about
manufacturing by try generate as much as possible of artifacts to solve some certain
problems. This section learned us how we can collaboration. So, we are ready and exciting
to do this assignment. This assignment about find problem and solution by three steps. start
with thinking about problem, some of us face it every day. There are big problems have
simple solution; brainstorming will help us to discover all possible solution can we do it by
our hand. We have to choose problem such as economy, health and transport. in this
assignment we will do three steps that help us to build the project that we needed in the end
of the course. First step gathering information, second step defined the problem, third step
and the last is generating ideas.
Figure (1) : Dunker diagram for students don't know enough about manufacturing.
2
The work :
Assignment L3-A to be complete and contain all the information that will help us in
finding the perfect project to work on, we need to go through three stages:
1- Gathering information: at this stage, we will make a survey helps us identify the
problem experienced by most people in the community, and we analyze and sort the results
in order to get what we want from the questionnaire. And then We composed the data and
built charts to demonstrate our outcomes obviously.
2- Problem definition: in this level, we will use 3 techniques that we learned in course IE
201 in concept section, which is:
a- present state/desired state.
b- Duncker diagram.
c- statement re-statement technique.
d- in “present state/desired state” we created an statement talking about the issue we have
and an announcement on how this issue will be fathomed in the future. For the second
technique Duncker diagram “we make a brainstorming to get general solution, functional
solution, and specific solution then we arranged them in the form of Duncker diagram . in
the third technique “statement re-statement” we utilized six triggers to look at the issue
from various viewpoints and diverse perspectives and several directions.
3- Idea Generation: in this stage, each member will generate 10 projects are believed to be
useful and applicable by brainstorming. and then we use the method that we used it in the
previous assignment which is “boggle method”, then we move to the voting method for
select 10 projects from among 50 projects that have been generated.

Findings:
As it is clear in figure (2) , the most of the participants choose “Traffic at peak times”. This
is a question of direct questions that answer it by participant and we allow this question to
choose more than one answer, because we know more about people's problems and its
importance in their lives. The second choice was the highest by the participants is “A lot of
potholes in the streets” This demonstrates the importance of these problems.
figure (3): The impact of the country’s economy on the individual economy
As shown in figure (3) , the most of people chose High impact to the economy of the state
to the individual economy, 85% of participants chose the impact of moderate-to-high. This
demonstrates the people's good awareness for the economy.
6
figure(4): The concept of the economy for the people.
As shown in figure (4), In this question, it is clear the main effect of the economy of the
participants in the questionnaire and there were three main choices and the last choice we
allow the participant to write the meanings out of what we have mentioned. The most of
participants chose the economy means money.
figure(5): The rate of people awareness of the importance of rationalization of water and
electricity to the state's economy.
As it is clear in figure (5) , 72.9% of the participants choose yes that they aware about the
importance of rationalization in electricity and water in the state economy, and the rest
with 27.1% said no about the awareness of the important rationalization in electricity and
water.
7
.figure (6): The rate of diseases due to pollution in the environment
As we can see in the previous figure (6), 58 of the participants say that the rate of diseases
due to pollution in the environment is high with a rate of 5 from 1 . but in the other hand ,
the majority of the participants think it’s moderate with rate of 3 from 1, and 53 of the
participants chose the least rate of 5. Few participants thought that the disease rate has
nothing related with pollution.
As shown in the figure (7), the rate of healthy food in people's lives 55 people chose to
take the lower rate which is presented in the first column . While 188 people eat healthy
food partially in their day. 11 people eat healthy eating regularly.
8
figure(8): The transportation that most of people use
As shown in the figure (8), we managed to know that the majority of people preferred to
drive his own car when he wants to get to something , 6% preferred going with taxi ,and
1% takes public transportation.
As it is clear in figure (9), the level of security in transport public in this question, we
discovered that the number of people who suffer from a lack of safety in public transport
are women, so we found that this problem is very important to treatment it .
9
figure(10): Provide transportation enough.
As shown in the figure (10) we managed to know what the people say about enough
availability for transportation in your country, 68% of the people says that there is enough
transportation availability in our country and, 32% say that it is not enough.

especially asthma, cardiovascular and even death have been scientifically associated with
air pollution.
To reduce the health effects of air pollution, we need to reduce the exposure to the
pollutants. The major action can be taken is to set a strict policies by governments to
monitor and control pollution. Individuals also can supports this action by staying indoors
during high pollution episodes, reducing outdoor air infiltration to indoors, cleaning
indoor air with air filters. Avoiding exposure to air pollutants is especially important for
susceptible individuals with chronic cardiovascular or pulmonary disease, children, and
the elderly. In many countries, there are "Air Quality Index" to spread an awareness to
public about air quality especially in urban areas.
Table (1.1): applying New Consumption for all Categories of Service According to
Council of Ministers' Decree [1].
Waleed is the supervisor of the arena at King Abdulaziz University for the day shift.
Waleed started with explaining that who lives an event is the most person who is affected
of it and the most person who understand and live the real hardship. He expressed that
one the main reasons of the heavy traffic during the rush hour is the careless of the
11
students and not commitment to the rules. Another problem is the people who use the
campus's roads as a shortcut to go to the opposite side. Waleed thinks that the bad
organization can be a serious reason, he says : "Preparatory year students are much more
than absorptive capacity for the university and the university administration must not
accept this number of students before making the campus ready for this number." Waleed
also suggested that the preparatory year students must have an addition class in the first 4
weeks to explain the rules and the map for the campus. He also mentioned that those
students must not be in such a small place while there is a lot of empty other buildings. In
addition, Waleed said that most of the students think there is no public transportation
inside the campus while there is public transportation but they do not know about because
the same reason that he mentioned before which is the bad organization and not
demonstrating the system for the new students. Waleed wants to send a message for the
new students which is they can park their cars at Building 91 parking and move to any
building in the campus using the university buses. Waleed demonstrated that whenever
the people start accepting the Mass transport culture will make it much easier for all.
Discussion :
From our analysis of the questionnaire we discovered the following ten problem
statement were:
1- People waste a lot of water. 2- Traffic at peak time. 3- People extravagancy in the
electricity. 4- A lot of potholes in the street. 5- The lack of safety in public transport for
women. 6- Lack of walking sport for a lot of people. 7- The large number of diseases due
to environmental pollution. 8- The lack of medical equipment in hospital. 9- Poor
infrastructure. 10- using mobile phone while driving.
Step 2: Problem Definition :
Context of problem definition :
We confront problems on our lives each day. These problems could be hard to
characterize. Now and again we stall out on in treating the apparent problems rather than
the genuine problems. After we have discovered our main five problems in economy in
past step, we utilized a few procedures to help us characterize the genuine problem.
Contingent upon the consequences of these procedures we will pick the possibility of our
venture. In this progression we utilized dunker diagram technique for two problems,
articulation re-proclamation strategy for all problems.
12
Discussion: The relation between these statements are very strong. So as we know the
people are waste a lot of water so we need to prevent them from wasted water for a
healthy life and healthy environment
Discussion: The relation between these two statement are powerful. As we know the
outages in water is a problem that most of people are having issues with. So when we
prevent this outages we will satisfy the customer.
Discussion: The match between these two statements are perfect. If we don’t have any
potholes will solve a huge problem that prevent cars from ruined.
Discussion: The relation between these statements are strong. As we can see in figure(1)
the traffic was the most problem that people was complain about. So we can make it a
small traffic at peak time that help us to accomplish the desired state.
13
Discussion: these statement are very strong attached to each other. So less exercise is not
healthy for people but in the other hand more exercise is healthy.
Discussion: the relation between these two statement are very great. there isn't enough
medical machines in the hospitals but in the other there is enough medical machines in the
hospitals.
Discussion: the first statement is using the phone while driving make a lot of accidents and
the second one is using the phone while driving make no accidents. So there is no much
difference between the two statement.
14
Discussion: There is a problem suffered by the people and it is the excess of exchange of
electricity, so we wrote two sentences help us to solve these problems, and this will help
us to generate solutions to this problem.
Discussion: This is a problem we are suffering from too much at the time’s rain where
that infrastructure if you were not a strong will cause many damage , So we wrote two
statement help us to solve this problem.
discussion:
These are two sentences we want to solve the problem of the lack of safety in public
transport for women, because women are suffering from many problems while transporting
across taxi and we need to generate solutions to solve this problem.
15
Second: Dunker diagram:
16
Discussion: Duncker Diagram as shown in the previous page in Figure (10) is divided into
two sides, first the left side which consists of solutions that helped us to achieve the desired
state, secondly, the right side which consists of solutions for the problem that make it OK
not to reach the desired problem. We started with the left side developing the general
solution that we took from Present State/Desired State which is (people rationalization in
water). We have two functional solutions which are remind people to close the tap and
enforce people to rationalization in water. Now, we have four specific solutions for the first
general solution which are the door won’t open until the tap is closed, make a
voice that will remind you if you left the tap open, put a sensor that will
send messages for your phone to tell that the tap is open. Then, we continue to
the right side to find solutions for the problem by making it OK not to achieve
the desired state which is (okay for people to extravagancy in water) as the
general solution. For this general solution, there are two functional solutions
which are Storage the wasted water and use the wasted water in farms. The
first functional solution has three specific solutions which are make the
wasted water take another line to be store in a small storage under the washer
to prevent the cutting in water, make the wasted water take another line to filtrate
and be able to drink, store the wasted water in a storage to use it for
cleaning. For the second functional solution there are three specific solutions
which are use the wasted water in farming, use it as a drink for the cattle, use
it for wash the cattle.
problem 2 : women face the problem of the lack of safety in public transport
figure(12): Duncker diagram for the problem (low level of safety for women in public
transportation
17
Discussion: The Duncker diagram technique helped us very much to find some solution
which make it ok to not achieve the desired state .we started in Figure (12) by generating
general solutions in the first of the diagram. then we made some functional solutions from
each general solution. Duncker diagram has two sides, the left hand side is to achieve the
desired state and not satisfaction by less than the desired. then, on the right hand side we
tried to make the present state OK. We started on our problem on the left hand side be
writing the desired state which is “women move to anywhere safely with public
transportation” and This is the general solution for the desired state. Therefore, we wrote
the first functional which is putting an emergency button and then we wrote how to do it as
specific solution, we want to make the button and it must be placed in front of the rear
seats and this button must be connected with the central police station and each button
must be registered on GPS system .The second functional solution is putting cameras in the
public transportation and we can do it by making all the videos saved in the main company
system and it must be shown online in the main company building and observed 24 hours
.Then we moved to the other general which is making the present state OK. The first
functional solution for it is not going to remote areas and you can do it by determining a
close, clear and easy destination, and the woman must try to take a child with her. The
second functional is providing chargers for all kind of phones. We can do this functional
solution by putting these chargers in front of the rear seat and they must be serviced
regularly and they must be unpluggable .
Statement Restatement:
Trigger 1.
People extravagancy in electricity because there is no limit of electricity consumption.
(Can we reduce the usage that the people’s needs?)
Trigger 2.
An open limit electricity makes the person how use electricity of personal uses waste a lot
of electricity.
(The restatement make us consider on the off chance that we limit the electricity the
customers. this may make them appreciation this electricity)
18
Trigger 3.
Can we make people waste little amount of electricity with an open limit electricity?
(The restatement make us think about if we can reduce the wasted electricity with the same
limit of electricity)
Trigger 4.
People always extravagancy in electricity because the open limit of electricity
consumption.
Trigger 5.
The universe “makes” in the problem statement make us think that the open limit of
electricity make people extravagancy in electricity, or maybe the open limit of electricity
consumption is not the reason behind the extravagancy in electricity. On the other hand,
maybe the people want a huge amount of electricity.
(This trigger helps us challenge the understood suspicions put forth in the issue expression)
Trigger 6.
figure (13): This picture shows that, many people leave the devices working without using
it and this cause wasting of electricity and extravagancy in electricity. which is the main
problem.
19
* Lack of walking sport makes endanger the health of people at risk
Trigger 1.
Lack of walking sport regularly makes the health of people at risk
(Do we have other kinds of exercise?)
Lack of walking sport regularly makes the health of people at risk
(Can we banish this danger?)
Lack of walking sport regularly makes the health of people at risk
(Do people have a good motivation to practice? In addition, do they realize the extent of
this risk?)
Trigger 2.
People exposed to the disease and some health problems make them appreciate the value of
walking sport
(The restatement make us think about if they suffered health problems then they will
realize the value of walking sport)
Trigger 4.
Lack of walking sport regularly always makes the health of people at risk
(The restatement make us thinks, why walking sport is always outdated by people?)
Trigger 5.
The word "makes" in the problem statement makes us think that the lack of walking sport
makes people's health at risk. On other hand maybe the people really cannot do the walking
sport because many things.
(This trigger helps us challenge the implicit assumptions made in the problem statement)
The following problem statement is:
* The large number of pits in the streets always cause crashes in the car
Trigger 3.
Lack of pits on the roads protect the car from a lot of problems
(The restatement make us considers, if we can remove the pits in the street )
Trigger 4.
The large number of pits in the streets sometimes cause crashes in the car.
(The restatement make us thinks, why the pits?)
The following problem statement is:
20
* Obviously, the lack of medical equipment in hospitals sometimes cause delays in
treatment for patients
Trigger 1.
Obviously, the lack of medical equipment in hospitals sometimes cause delays in
treatment for patients
(Do we need to increase the medical equipment?)
Obviously, the lack of medical equipment in hospitals sometimes cause delays in
treatment for patients
(Do we have another ways to treatment the patients?)
Trigger 2.
Because of the lack of medical equipment has become some people travel to get the
treatment.
Trigger 3.
If we have enough medical equipment, we will have a treatment for all patients
Trigger 4.
Obviously, the lack of medical equipment in hospitals never cause delays in treatment for
patients
Trigger 6.
𝑀
The number of medical equipment for each hospital = ( ) ÷ 3.75
𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 ℎ𝑜𝑠𝑝𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑠
(This restatement makes us thinks about the other ways increase the medical equipment)
The variable M is depend on the amount of money that K.S.A spend it yearly (in dollar) to
purchase new medical equipment to meet the people needs. When M increase the price of
usage will increase too. In addition, we have to convert the price from $ to S.R by divided
on difference between currency.
The following problem statement is:
21
* Using a mobile phone while driving is clearly cause accidents
Trigger 5
The word "clearly" in the problem statement explains that if we do not use the mobile
when we drive, we will be away from accidents. May be we need so much to use the phone
in a temporary situation or to make an important call.
(This trigger helps us challenge the implicit assumptions made in the problem statement)
Trigger 6.
Figure(14): This picture demonstrate that, many people using their mobile phone while
they drive, and this cause a lot of accidents.
The following problem statement is :
22
* heavy traffic at peak times sometimes be a reason to being late for work
Trigger 1.
Heavy traffic at peak time sometimes be a reason to being late for work
( can we make it light traffic ?)
Heavy traffic at peak time sometimes be a reason to being late for work
( can we change peak time ?)
Heavy traffic at peak time sometimes be a reason to being late for work
( is there another reason ?)
Heavy traffic at peak time sometimes be a reason to being late for work
( can we make it fine to be late for work ?)
Trigger 2.
( going to work at peak time will cause being late for you )
the restatement makes us think about if we can go to work at non-peak time )
trigger 3.
( can we go to work at peak time and be always on time ?)
the restatement make us think if we can find another way to go at peak time and reach
work on time . OR
the restatement make us think if we can make peak time ok to go at it without heavy traffic
trigger 4.
Traffic cars at peak times never be a reason to delay work.
Trigger 5.
the phrase “be a reason” make us think that the heavy traffic is the reason of being late for
work but, it may not. depending on only one road in the city may be the reason.
Trigger 6.
23
Discussion:
We used the statement restatement technique in those problems to define the
problems. We have defined the real problems by the 6 triggers. for the first statement we
used all the 6 triggers .The second statement we used triggers 1,2,4,and 5. Third, we used
triggers 3 and 4. Fourth, we used triggers 1,2,3,4, and 6. Fifth, we used triggers 3 and 4. In
sixth we used triggers 5 and 6. Seventh, we used triggers 1,3,and 4. For the last statement ,
we used triggers 1,2,,4,5,and 6. In the first trigger we make the imperative word strong and
made an questions about it to reach at alternate perspectives. In the second triggers we
made a reasonable meaning of the importance .In the third triggers we did invert the issue
from opposition to positive and versa vice. In the fourth triggers we changed always,
sometimes , never to lower level. In the fifth trigger we changed the convince word into
reasons of convenience. In the sixth triggers we express words as a condition or picture.
After we did the statement restatement technique we learned new ways to solve problem.
we think that the statement restatement technique will improve us in solving problem.
Five problem definition
1- People extravagancy in electricity because there is no limit of electricity consumption.
2- heavy traffic at peak times sometimes be a reason to being late for work.
3- Using a mobile phone while driving is clearly cause accidents.
4- Women face the problem of insecurity in the public transport.
5- people waste a lot of water.
Step3: Idea generation:
In this step we need to generate 10 artifact for each member on the five problem
definition which will be: people extravagancy in electricity because there is no limit of
electricity consumption, heavy traffic at peak times sometimes be a reason to being late for
work, using a mobile phone while driving is clearly cause accidents, and people waste a
lot of water . After brainstorming, we will use boggle method to helps us determine the
ideas by remove the duplicates. after we finished boggle method we will use multi voting
technique to choose the 10 artifact. in the end of this assessment we will get an incredible
idea to solve the five problem definition.
Brainstorming:
Brainstorming is one of the most important technique and we will use it to generate
artifact. every member in the team will do brainstorming to create 10 artifact. after this step
we will have 60 artifact.

Discussion of brainstorming
Finally, we gathered and analyzed all questions. First step was difficult, because we used
our brainstorming to find problem such as manufacture. We made questioners to find the
befit problems. The questioners was for who faces problems, that help us to try find the

Discussion of boggle’s:
After we finished brainstorming artifact, we used boggle method to helps us remove the
duplicated artifact. When we chose to begin this progression, every member essentially
wrote 10 artifact. At that point, we began to remove the duplicated one. After we have used
boggle method, now we have 40 artifact every artifact is nothing like the other one. The
next step is Multi-Voting, we will use Multi-Voting Method to choose top 6 artifact.
Multi voting:
Context of multi voting:
We still need to reduce the number of artifacts more, even after using boggle method. We
need to come up with the best and the most important 6 artifacts from Table (3.2). So we
are going to use the multi-voting method to finish this step. At the beginning, each member
has a certain number of votes and this number votes is the sum of the artifacts divided by
3. That gives each member of us 12 votes. Each member can give 3 votes for the artifact at
most and he can give zero if he wants.

Discussion:
In the end of this assignment L3-A, we have picked up many information about the
problem definition. We know now how to characterize an problem effectively. We
additionally worked helpfully and difficult to accomplish the most extreme level of
progress which helped us a lot to reinforce bonds connect us together as a group. This
assignment encouraged us to apply the systems of problem definition successfully. We also
couldn't complete the work without strategies techniques we learned in IE201 like the
initial four stage for gathering information which we connected by making surveys and
appropriated to people , then we analyze the data from the questionnaire form to make
charts to demonstrate our findings to make it easier for the reader to suffer it. after that , we
went to ask some experts to help us make a good problem statements to solve it. we move
to applied three strategies to define problems effectively, which are: Present State/Desired
State , duncker diagram , statement restatement .In the third step we produce 10 artifacts
from every member by utilizing brainstorming and we utilize boggles technique to pick
the best thoughts. after that, Modified Multi Voting to achieve the main 6 ideas. it was a
great start to go build a perfect project.
