Identifying Implicit Biases

Activity Title _______________________________________________

Utah Core Standard: Social Studies, 9th-10th grade, Rational Thinking: Identifying

when a fallacy is being committed.

Objective (s): Be able to explain/address the implicit bias during the teaching demo

Learning Outcomes: (What do you expect students to master as a result of your lesson?)
Students should be able to identify biases, and understand how they marginalize minority
groups.

Instructional Procedures: Students will be broken up into two groups. First group will be the demo,
The second group will spectate. I will provide a paper to spectators with a list of biases, as the demo
group will answer questions. After questions are done, I will ask the demo what they thought of the
experience, once reflection is over I will ask the spectators what really happened.
Materials:
Computer, flash cards, list of definitions, and your critical minds

Family Connections: (take home activity)
Take a list of the implicit biases home and have an open conversation, I will also provide a website
that will test your bias.
Assessment Plan: (how do you plan to assess whether or not students mastered the
skill/concept?)
Formative: having a classroom discussion to gauge the students understanding

Summative: I will have my students create a final project of an implicit biases that people might not b
aware about and talk about it. This can be done through a power point, a video, animations, poster,
multi-media etc.
