Chapter 1: Rotational Motion

a) A compact disc in a computer can rotate at 5400 revolutions per minute. What is the angular
velocity of the disc in rad/s?
b) Identify the reason for a particle with different radii, r, for having an equal angular velocity
but different linear velocity.
c) The Earth takes slightly less than one day to complete one rotation about the axis passing
through its poles. The actual time is 8.616 104 s. Given this information, what is the angular
speed of the Earth about its axis?
d) State two phenomena in nature that obey rotational motion.
e) A student rotates a wheel and the wheel accelerates from the angular velocity of 2 rad/s to 4
rad/s in 6 s. If the radius of the wheel is 0.4 m, what are the angular acceleration and the
tangent acceleration for the wheel?
f) A fan rotating with an initial angular velocity of 1000 rev/min is switched off. In 2 seconds,
the angular velocity decreases to 200 rev/min. Assuming the angular acceleration is
constant, how many revolutions does the blade undergo during this time?
g) A 1.0-m roulette wheel reaches a maximum angular speed of 18 rad/s before it begins
decelerating. After reaching this maximum angular speed, it turns through 35 revolutions
(220 rad) before it stops. How long did it take the wheel to stop after reaching its maximum
angular speed?
h) Calculate the rotational inertia (moment of inertia) of a 12 kg uniform rod, 0.30 m long,
rotating about an axis perpendicular to the rod and passing through the center of the rod.
i) A disc with its moment of inertia equals 0.96 kg m2 at a rate of 31.42 rad/s. Find its rotational
kinetic energy

Chapter 2: Torque and Static Equilibrium

a) State the condition for an object to be in static equilibrium.

b) In below figure, find F1 and F2 that acts on a uniform beam with mass 30 kg.

c) A uniform rod AB with length 2 m and weight 20 N is placed on two supports A and B. A
weight of 10 N is hanged 0.4 m from A. Find force X and Y on both supports.

X Y

0.4 m 0.6 m 1.0 m

A B

10 N W=20 N
d) Two men are carrying a uniform horizontal ladder weighs 400 N. The first man lifts at a point
3 m from the midpoint of the ladder and the second man lifts at a point 4.5 m from the
midpoint. Determine the reaction experienced by each man
e) Calculate the force required to produce 20 Nm torque at an angle of 50º from along a 300 cm
rod?
f) Determine the torque on a bolt, if you are pulling with a force of 200 N directed perpendicular
to a wrench of length 20 cm? How does the torque change for a wrench of twice the length?
g) A hand exerts a force of 90 N on a scale at 32 cm from the joint center at the elbow. The triceps
attach to the ulna at a 90° angle, and at a distance of 3 cm from the joint center. The weight of
the forearm and the hand is 40 N with the forearm/hand center of gravity located 17 cm from
the elbow joint center. Considering these conditions, how much force is being exerted by the
triceps? Remember that you are interested in the forces acting on the forearm system.
