Name of the experiment: Introduction to The Digital Telephony.

Objectives:
 To know about telephony system.
 To know about various parts of telephony system.

Theory: Telephony is the technology associated with the electronic transmission of voice, fax,
or other information between distant parties using systems historically associated with the
telephone, a handheld device containing both a speaker or transmitter and a receiver. With the
arrival of computers and the transmittal of digital information over telephone systems and the use
of radio to transmit telephone signals, the distinction between telephony and telecommunication
has become difficult to make.

Block diagram of a digital switching system:

The discussion of several parts of a digital switching system:
Elements of switching system:
i. Trunk interface
ii. Subscriber line interface
iii. Service circuit interface
iv. Controller Operator console
v. Subscriber service line & distributor unit
vi. Trunk circuit scanning & distributor unit
vii. Junctor
Trunk: A trunk is a line or link designed to handle many signals simultaneously. It often
consists of multiple wires.
Junctors: In a telephone junction box, a small section of twisted wire pair that is used to attach
incoming lines with outgoing lines.
Subscriber circuit interface: It alerts the central office system that user wishes to make a call.
Transmitt number to be called and convert signal to digital form.

A typical telephone consists of several keyes, such as:

i. 0-9: The buttons between zero to nine are for creating the number is to be dialed.
ii. Pause: By pressing this pause button, a phone is called for a moment.
iii. Redial: By pressing this pause button a phone is made to the same number with which
the previous phone call was established.
iv. Recall/ Call waiting: This button enables to use some extra features . It can be used to
give the user a second dial.

Discussion: From this experiment we have come to know about digital telephony system and
various parts of this system and how they work.
