 Why study chemistry?

We all do chemistry every day! Chemistry is

truly the "central science". New breakthroughs
in fields such as genetics, biochemistry,
medicine, materials science, forensics,
nanotechnology, drug discovery, the
environment and next-generation computer
hardware are all driven by chemistry.

Chemistry is about the molecules all around

us. It is about matter: specifically how matter
changes. Doing a degree in Chemistry will
allow you to learn about why the things around
us behave the way they do.

Chemistry opens the door for many careers

because training in chemistry is essential for
many positions in industry, is highly desirable
for science teaching, and is useful for careers
in the public service and management. Both
the public and the private sectors increasingly
draw their higher management echelons from
chemistry graduates.

But, most importantly, it is just so fascinating! If

you want to understand the workings of the
world around you - then chemistry is for you!
 Understanding
Chemistry

There are many branches of chemistry or chemistry

disciplines. The 5 main major branches of chemistry are
considered to be organic chemistry, inorganic
chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry,
and biochemistry.

.
Overview of the 5 Major Branches of
Chemistry

 Organic Chemistry - The study of carbon and its compounds; the

study of the chemistry of life.

 Inorganic Chemistry - The study of compounds not-covered by

organic chemistry; the study of inorganic compounds or
compounds which do not contain a C-H bond. Many inorganic
compounds are those which contain metals

 Analytical Chemistry - The study of the chemistry of matter and

the development of tools used to measure properties of matter.

 Physical Chemistry - The branch of chemistry that applies

physics to the study of chemistry. Commonly this includes the
applications of thermodynamics and quantum mechanics to
chemistry.

 Biochemistry - This is the study of chemical processes that occur

inside of living organisms.

Be aware, there are other ways chemistry may be divided into

categories. Other examples of branches of chemistry might
include polymer chemistry and geochemistry. Chemical
engineering may also be considered to be a chemistry discipline.
There is also overlap between disciplines. Biochemistry and
organic chemistry, in particular, share a lot in common.

 Job Responsibilities

Who do you think ensures the smell and taste of chocolates or

roses? – Chemists! – They are the ones who check if your
deodorants and antiperspirants are operating properly and also
evaluate the perfume. Sounds much better than a boring desk
job?

How tasty was what you ate for breakfast? Chemists play a major
role in creating foods that are tempting to our palette. They
ensure that foods are well-preserved and safe.

Forensic chemists analyse evidences that are brought in from

crime scenes

If you love science and have a passion for writing, why not
combine the two? Science journalism is a field, which enables
you to write for specialist magazines or public communications
universities and government departments.

As an environmental engineer, you can solve environmental

problems and work in different avenues, such as pollution control,
public health issues, climate change and wildlife conservation.
What about contributing to help make a greener city, perhaps by
creating greener cars?

Chemistry graduates are highly sought after by international

companies. In an uncertain world, what could be a greater benefit
than almost having a job guaranteed at the end of one's study!
 Personality Traits

A candidate needs to have the following

traits for a successful career in the fields
of Chemistry :

Analytical Nature

Team Orientation

Creativity

Attentiveness
 F.A.Qs

What is chemistry?

We like to think of chemistry as the "central science" as a knowledge

of molecular structures and properties is crucial in our understanding
a large parts of science.

By studying chemistry you will acquire a wide range of skills and

learn about ideas and concepts which address all the important
questions in modern science.

A degree in chemistry is also an excellent preparation for moving out

into the world — not just into the very successful chemical and
pharmaceutical industry — but also into business and the
professions.

What subjects are needed to study chemistry?

You have to complete your Std X with PCB minimum.

Is mathematics needed to study chemistry?

No

Is the course different at different Colleges?

No. Everybody, regardless of which College they belong to, goes through more or less same
syllabus of the same lectures and practical classes and takes the similar examinations.
e Department you get to meet people
Do I need to study for three or four years?
Generally colleges offer three- and four-year courses. The four-year course is
intended for those people who plan to go on to be professional chemists — for
example by doing research in a university or company.
The three-year course is intended for people who wish to move on to other
careers which are not necessarily directly related to chemistry. In practice,
about 75% of the third year carry on for a fourth year, but not all of these carry
on with a chemistry-based career.

When do I have to decide whether to do the three- or four-year

course?
You can delay your decision until half way through the third year. There's no
hurry!

What other non-traditional jobs are there out there for

those with a chemistry degree?
Communication – technical writer, technical editor, science writer, journalist, video
producer, working freelance or for scientific publisher or scientific organization
Science photographer, art conservator, material scientist….

Information – searching/retrieval, science librarian, technical information center

manager.

Patents – searching, researching, writing, prosecuting (applying for), litigating (fighting

infringement of), as patent searcher, patent liaison, patent agent, patent attorney.

Sales and Marketing – customer support, technical sales (inside or outside sales),
technical buyer, product development, product management, account manager.

Business Development – technology transfer, product management, product

development, corporate development, liaison.

Regulatory Affairs/public policy – public health, inspector, product regulatory

stewardship, science advisor, lobbyist, working for company, government, law firm,
public agency.

Human resources – recruiting, management.

Computers – computational chemistry molecular modeling, database development,

database management.
