crime incidents in northern
Mindanao have dropped
substantially in the first
quarter of this year in com-
parison to the same period
last year.
Police regional director
Chief Supt. Timoteo Pa-
cleb said the crime index
dropped by 38.13 percent
based on the crime statis-
tics of Camp Alagar for the
first quarter of 2018.
Last year, the region
posted a total of 5,297
crime incidents in the first
quarter but in the same pe-
riod this year, Camp Alagar
counted 3,276 crime inci-
dents. In the first quarter of
2016, northern Mindanao
posted a total of 5,714
crime incidents.
Pacleb attributes the
dive in crime incidents in
the region to Camp Al-
agar’s continued campaign
against illegal drugs.
He said crimes such as
robbery, physical injury,
domestic violence, rape,
and theft could be attribut-
ed to the high usage of ille-
gal drugs across the region
in the past two years.
Police also arrested 534
drug suspects in northern
Mindanao from January to
March, this year.
The police have also
visited some 6,571 houses
under its “Oplan Tokhang”
campaign that resulted in
504 drug users admitting
to using illegal drugs.
During the first quarter,
Camp Alagar claimed that
107 drug pushers surren-
dered.
In a press statement,
police said there were
452 operations conducted
throughout the region that
resulted in the arrest of 534
people and the confiscation
of some 629.66 grams of
shabu and 3,696.18 grams
of dried marijuana leaves.

Maguindanao to hold job fair this week
COTABATO City — The
provincial government of
Maguindanao is set to host
a big jobs fair in Buluan
town on April 26–27 where
young and energetic job-
seekers are urged to apply
and be employed under ASA
Philippines Foundation that is
looking for 500 microfinance
officers (MFOs) in the prov-
ince alone.
Monina Macarongon,
provincial human resource
office chief, said the jobs
fair will help unemployed
constituents get hired and
be part of thousands of other
Filipinos working with the
foundation.
She said officials and
personnel of the organiza-
tion from Manila will visit
Buluan on the scheduled
two-day event to conduct
the jobs hiring that will be
held at Lumpingan building
near at the satellite office of
the provincial capitol.
The ASA group is look-
ing for thousands of new
MFOs that will serve as
frontline workers of their
operations.
“A total of 500 slots were
allocated for the people of
Maguindanao,” Macaron-
gon stressed.
ASA Philippines is a
non-profit, non-stock corpo-
ration specializing in micro-
finance. Its first branch was
set up in Camarin, Caloocan
in 2004 before expanding
nationwide.
The group caters to some
1.5 clients called micro-entre-
preneurs across the country.
Applicants should be
21 to 28-years-old who
are willing to work with
poor people and have an
academic background of at
least 72 units completed at
any colleges.

No. RB XII-20, Cano said

an increase of P16 in their
daily pay while those in ag-
riculture, retail and service
establishments will get an
additional P18.
He said it sets the new
minimum daily wage rate
for non-agriculture workers
to P311 and those working in
agriculture, retail and service
establishments to P290.
Cano said the wage ad-
justment was made “motu
proprio” or by the initiative
of the board after a review
of the region’s socio-eco-
nomic condition.
The region comprises the

others were killed in po-
lice anti-drug operations
in parts of Region 12 or

three months.

based on the results of the
537 illegal drug-related op-
erations conducted by local
police units since January.

Red herring
IT’S handicapped arguing when a
person who wishes to refute a point
resorts to red herring.
This underhanded
tactic comes into play
when the one who
wishes to overthrow
an assertion is inca-
pable of presenting
a decent argument to
free himself from a

I wish I can shorten this so that
columnist Ben Contreras will not think
that I am “very angry” as he speculated
in his Saturday column. Honestly, this is
the first time in my entire career to have
encountered a man who equates the
length of written materials to the degree
of human emotions. Based on this line
of thinking, the length of editorials is
indicative of the degree of emotions
instead of substance. So, are we to say
now that an author who writes a se-
ries of commentary about a particular
subject is among the angriest people on
the planet? So, the shorter the written
material is, the less angry one is? And
what if the commentary comes in the
form of books similar to Thomas Paine’s
Common Sense and Age of Reason?
The thicker the book is, the angrier
the author is? Is that it? That is simply
ridiculous.
Anyways, Ben imagined that I was
“very angry” because I wrote a lengthy
commentary about his account of a
supposed phone conversation with an
influential peddler from Manila who told
the columnist that he could fix the prob-
lem of the governor of Misamis Oriental
during the Estrada administration for a
whopping P25 million.
My commentary, which Ben took
as an expression of anger, was aimed at

of the CDO-CPCC..
The PGSP is one of the major pro-
grams of the NFA in support of the rice
production enhancement program of the
national government. And it is the NFA
that is mandated to establish and enforce
the national grains standards in collabo-
ration with various sectors.
The PGSP has essential features
such as quality standards that aim to
standardize the quality of grains in the
market according to the classification,
variety and grade.
It also has packaging and labelling
standards which regulate the size of
packaging, the materials used, size and
color of packaging and price tags. It
also has a set of color codes in the pre-

testing the veracity of his own account
based on what he wrote in his column
two Saturdays ago. So that we would
not lose track of the points I raised, this,
again, is exactly Ben’s narrative in his
own words: “For example, during the
time of Erap, somebody called me from
Manila if I know the governor of Mis-
amis Oriental. I said, ‘Yes, what about
it?’ Then he said, ‘I know somebody
from COA who could fix his problem for
P25 million.’”
Note that I did not make up this an-
ecdote. Whether the story is true or not,
it did not come out of thin air. It is a dis-
closure of what took place by a self-con-
fessed participant to the supposed phone
conversation. It came straight from the
horse’s mouth.
Is there a way for us to test the verac-
ity of this claim? Yes, there is because
the one who has made such a claim is
in front of all of us and should be in the
position to give more details and answer
questions about his own story.
To test the anecdote, to see if the
claim would stand public scrutiny, was
the purpose of my commentary last
Monday. Ben failed the test if we are
to base it on his response on Saturday
because of what looks like a desperate
attempt to deflect from questions aimed
at testing his narrative. Rather than tak-
ing the bull by the horns, he unleashed
about a dozen more tales as spurious as
his phone-conversation claim, many of
which are not of public interest in the
first place. While it was entertaining
to readers, none of what he wrote was
about the anecdote pertaining to this
mysterious phone pal. The deflection
was crystal clear.
There is even a reference in Ben’s
response about what a dead writer would
love to do (to me?) if he were alive.
That is preposterous, Ben. This I can say

Special rice should be packed in sky
blue sacks while premium grade rice is
required to be in light yellow. White
sacks are required for well-milled, reg-
ular-milled, and under-milled rice. For
shelled corn of all grades, light green
sacks are required.
The type of material is specified to be
woven polypropylene, and the sack must
indicate certain required information
such as classification of grains, variety,
grade, net weight, name and address
of miller, name and address of owner
(if custom-milled), that the grains are
iron-enriched.
Further dissecting these standards
will take us to parameters such as pu-
rity, foreign matter, defects in kernels
(chalky, immature, damaged), and mois-
ture content, among other parameters.
For price tags, retailers are required
to comply with the dimension, color, and
the required information such as price
per kilo, classification, variety which is
required for special rice, the grade, and
that the contents are iron-enriched. The
markings in these price tags must be
black (contrary to the common practice
of using white chalk).
As I have reported in an earlier
column, the CDO-CPCC and the NFA
conducted an inventory of rice in at least
thirty warehouses in the city. During
these rounds, the CDO-CPCC took note
of deviations committed by grains trad-
ers vis-à-vis the PGSP.

Fishy weather
ONE evening, the fish dinner at home

How did I notice?
Because usually that

Obviously, Bantayan is not merely an
island in Cebu. It’s also good advice for
anything, from cooking to managing a
business to body weight, although, one
can “bantay” that weight and it will still

I’m not trying to find out how that
tax increased again. I should have
complained the first time that tax soared
higher than the distance between Earth
and the super blue blood moon.
I’m guessing there was at least one
taxpayer who did complain years ago
the first time the business tax rate went
flying to the Milky Way, making that
taxpayer throw his weight around at the
City Treasurer’s Office like a spoiled
brat when a parent refuses to buy him
a toy. But there was also the taxpayer
whose good heart prevailed, he sighed
upon seeing his tax due and said, Para
sa ekonomiya. If the taxes he paid have
helped fund the removal of Cagayan de
Oro’s spaghetti wires, para sa ekonomi-
ya indeed.
As you can see, the JR Borja General
Hospital is finally operating like a real
hospital, multi-story school buildings
have been built, there are now roads
in barangays far far away, and all that
work must have been a real challenge
to City Mayor Oscar Moreno. Look at
his hair—it has turned white. But it’s all
worth it. To relax, there’s a piano in his
city hall office and it’s not mere décor.
He does know how to play—the piano,
that is. I wonder if he can accompany
himself while singing “What a Wonder-
ful World” for the barangay candidates’
campaign sorties next month. And what
political party is that now? But his loyal
fans will always say, Kung saan ka
masaya, suportahan taka. Loyal—mean-
ing, those he brought with him to city
hall. There were fans that didn’t end up
there with him and, well, they’re not
his loyal fans anymore. That’s the sad
side of politics, and former President
Erap Estrada has the perfect term for it:
“Weather-weather lang.”
Weather-weather lang ‘pag umuulan.
That kind of weather.
There may—or may not—be a new
city hall occupant next year, with the
violet curtains raring to make a stunning
comeback at the city mayor’s office.
Those who love Moreno’s minimalist
office probably have a ready response
for that violet possibility: Que horror!
And they’ll treat that violet comeback
as regressing to the Jurassic Age again.
Isn’t that boring, though, for the city
to have only two contenders for the
mayoral post? Unless a certain former
congressman will again join the fray
and—voila!—it’s Election 2016 all over
again. Déjà vu. Unless the son will run
in lieu of the father for the violet party.
Exciting, eh?
The Pinoy is generally too easy to
please, enabling any political candidate
to easily sail through stormy winds.

Treasury fully awards 91-day T-bill; partially awards 6-month, 1-yr paper
BUREAU of the Treasury’s
(BTr) auction committee
made a full award for the
benchmark 91-day Treas-
ury bill (T-bill) on Monday
but only partially awarded
the longer tenors after banks
asked for high yields.
Rate of the 91-day paper
averaged at 3.493 percent,
lower than the 3.6643 percent
in the secondary market after
Monday’s morning session but
higher than the 3.346 percent
in the auction last April 10.
This tenor was offered for
5 billion but attracted tenders
amounting to P11.527 bil-
lion. The auction committee
awarded P5 billion.
On the other hand, only
P2.08 billion was awarded for
the 182-day bill from the P4
billion offering after bids to-
taled to just P3.33 billion.
Rate of the six-month paper
averaged at 3.684 percent, ,
lower than the 3.8933 percent
in the secondary market. The
auction committee rejected
bids in the previous auction.
Also, P1.735 billion worth
of one-year T-bill was award-

P1.016 billion integrated cacao
plantation project in Barangay
Nuyo, Buldon, Maguindanao.
On Monday, the board unani-
mously approved the registra-
tion of ChocoInvest Corp. for
the undertaking of the project.
Lawyer Ishak Mastura, RBOI
chair and managing head, said
the project would help the coun-
try achieve its target of 100,000
metric tons (MT) cacao produc-
tion by 2020.
Mastura also said the project
would support the government’s
“Cacao Double Up Program”
in line with the Philippine 2020
Cacao Challenge, which aims
to address the very low supply
of about 10,000 MT or 80 per-
cent short of the average local
consumption demand of 50,000
MT annually (Cocoa Barometer
2012).
Cacao growing and produc-
tion, he said, is labor-intensive,
thus providing more livelihood
and jobs in the rural areas, espe-
cially in Buldon.
“ChocoInvest will be granted
with fiscal incentives, such as in-
come tax holidays for six years,
as well as other incentives be-
ing provided by the government
upon the start of its commercial
operations,” Mastura added.
Cacao, also known as the
“Food of the Gods” or the “Tree
of Love”, is the main ingredient
in making chocolates expanding
its application to food, beverage,
cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.
Carlos Vargas, ChocoInvest
chief executive officer, said the
project is a joint venture be-
tween the company and the Bal-
atawan Farmers Producers Co-
operative, which is composed of
former Moro rebels.
Vargas was inspired to pursue
the project with the group whose
members have laid down their
firearms in an amnesty program
under previous administrations.
“The group has decided years
ago to stop the conflict and en-
gage instead on a war against
poverty,” he said.
The project will initially start
with a 20-hectare model cacao
farm that will eventually expand
to a total of 1,750 hectares or
more, intercropped with coffee,
banana, coconut and other cash
crops.
Aside from the domestic
market, major markets are Sin-
gapore, United Arab Emirates,
Australia, and the European
Union.
In a statement, ARMM Gov-
ernor Mujiv Hataman said the
project is very relevant and a
result of peace efforts since it in-
volves rebel returnees, who are
now active members of society
and partners in development.
“Clearly, the government’s
multi-pronged strategy to pre-
vent marginalized communi-
ties, particularly among the
Bangsamoro, from being lured
into extremism is bearing fruit
and it is now those communi-
ties that are actively seeking
economic opportunities thru
partnership with investors,”
Hataman said.
“I have witnessed this also
in Basilan, my home province,
where the Abu Sayyaf laid
down their arms in order to start
new lives with the economic op-
portunities offered by both the
government and the private sec-

Fund (IMF) maintained its 2018
and 2019 growth forecasts for
the Philippines in its April 2018
World Economic Outlook (WEO)
report, owing to strong domestic
demand and public investment,
an IMF official revealed.
In its latest report, the multilat-
eral agency projected a 6.7 per-
cent and 6.8 percent gross domes-
tic product (GDP) growth for this

unchanged from the WEO report

LAND Transportation Franchis-
ing and Regulatory Board (LT-
FRB) has ordered ride-sharing
company Grab to explain its fare
structure as the board conducted
a hearing Tuesday on the suppos-
edly unauthorized P2 per minute
additional charge.

has imposed the travel duration
rate since June 2017 despite not
being stipulated in an order re-
leased last December 27, 2016
by the Board, which set the fare
structure of transportation net-
work companies (TNCs).
“The Board directs Grab to
disclose and submit when they
have actually imposed the PHP2
per minute travel charge and
how many trips on a monthly
basis Grab has booked from the
time they started imposing the
charge,” LTFRB Chairman Mar-
tin Delgra III said.
The December 2016 order
stipulates that Grab should im-
pose a flagdown rate of P40 with
an additional rate of P10 to P14
per kilometer excluding per min-
ute travel charges.
“The Board has exercised not
only its oversight but also adju-
dicatory powers when it issued
an order last December 27, 2016.
The order remains in effect,”
Delgra said.
“There was no mention of
travel time rate by Grab when the
LTFRB came out with an order
last December 2016 on the fare
structure of TNCs,” he added.
Grab legal counsel John Paul
Nabua said that its PHP2 per
minute travel charge was in ac-
cordance with the order of the
then Department of Transpor-
tation and Communications
(DOTC) in 2015, which allows
ride-sharing companies to set
their own fares with the oversight
of the LTFRB.
“Department Order 2015-11
allows TNCs to determine their
rates. Grab started charging the
travel duration rate as early as
June 2017,” Nabua said.
He admitted, however, that
there was no mention of per min-
ute rate in the December 2016
order of the LTFRB.

through mutual understanding and respect but limited to some extent.
What exactly are the characteristics of an effective classroom management and
teacher to student relationship? Effective teacher-student relationships have nothing
to do with the teacher's personality or even with whether the students view the teacher
as a friend. Rather, the most effective teacher-student relationships are characterized
by specific teacher behaviors: exhibiting appropriate levels of dominance; exhibiting
appropriate levels of cooperation; and being aware of students in need.
By applying the following you let your presence known and a sense of authority
is established. How you manage your students determines the outcome of their
development as a healthy classroom would mean, a better learning experience for all.
If a student deserves to be commended for a job well done he/she should receive
one, but if the student’s actions are negatively influencing the student then he/she
should be corrected and guided to the right path, it is not right to tolerate a student’s
bad behavior as this may be carried through out a their academic life.
It is up to us educators to uphold the rules and regulations set forth by our school

planned PHP50 billion stock
rights offering (SRO) to bolster
its strategic priorities, such as
digitalization and more focus
on small and medium enter-

In a briefing Thursday, BPI
President and CEO Cezar
Consing said they want to ex-
pand the bank’s client base,
which to date is estimated at
8.5 million.
Apart from enhancing the
bank’s digitalization and SME
lending, it will also improve its
deposit franchise and delivery
infrastructure, as well as increase
the share of its microfinance
business. Focus on these four pri-
orities “will make us much more
inclusive,” said Consing.
To date, the bank’s corporate
loans account for 80 percent of
the total loan portfolio, while
retail loans have a 20-percent
share.
Consing said they want to
change the ratio to 65-35 in the
next four to five years.
In terms of overall opera-
tions, the BPI chief said, “this
year is shaping up fine” for the
bank, noting the positive trend
of interest rates.
“I think the potential for high-
er interest rates, the potential for
maybe a lower reserve require-
ment, and the potential for con-
tinued growth is a positive for

BSP officials say rate hike
adjustment not yet needed

restore price surge cap
LAND Transportation Fran-
chising and Regulatory Board
(LTFRB) has allowed rideshar-
ing firm Grab Philippines to
restore its price surge cap from
1.5 to 2 times the normal fare as
it has approved several accredi-
tations of new transportation
network companies (TNCs).
On Friday, the LTFRB
granted Grab’s motion to va-
cate which seeks to reverse its
earlier order for the price surge
cap to be lowered to 1.5x. The
order was issued last April 11
as the Board processes the ap-
plications of new TNCs.
LTFRB Board Member Ai-
leen Lizada, however, said
Grab will be able to impose the
2x surge rate starting Monday.
PNB to issue $300-m notes
THE Tan-led Philippine National
Bank (PNB) announced on Fri-
day its scheduled issuance of $300
million worth of five-year-and-
one-day Fixed Rate Senior Notes
as part of the bank’s Medium-
Term Note Program (MTNP).
In a disclosure with the Philip-
pine Stock Exchange (PSE), the
bank said the Notes, to be settled
on April 26, is the initial issuance
under the bank’s MTNP. The
Notes have a coupon rate of 4.25
percent per annum and will be
priced at 99.532 per 100.
“Proceeds of the Notes will be
used for PNB’s general corporate
purposes,” the disclosure said.

evil. I stated that if the influential
peddler is not identified by Ben
who is in the position to give a
name because he claims to have
firsthand information, the fixer
would likely get away with it and
would continue offering similar
multimillion-peso proposals
to officials in trouble with the
audit commission. That should
also give Ben the opportunity
to prove to his readers that he
did not make up the story about
the phone conversation and that
this anecdote is not an illusory
idea which he repeated over and
over again in his mind until he
convinced himself that it was
a fact. The moment columnists
start talking to imaginary friends
on imaginary phones, we have

we end the public discussion on
the anecdote. Yet it seems to me
that Ben doesn’t want his ideas
and claims to be questioned and
tested, and sees anyone who does
to be a “very angry” reader that
has launched a personal attack.
So why won’t Ben name this
Mr. Somebody? In his response
on Saturday, he presented a
concoction of out-of-context
anecdotes, half-truths, lies and
exaggerations that are, more or
less, similar to his tale about this
mysterious and morally bankrupt
phone pal. If I respond to all of
that, then we will lose track of
what made me write my com-
mentary in the first place.
Nice try, Ben, but I have
been through this many times
already, and it would take you
more firepower to make me lose
focus and keep off the track.
Besides, exposing about a dozen
half-truths, exaggerations, lies
and out-of-this-world innuen-
does dished out by Ben just so he
could escape from a situation he
created for himself would mean
lengthier commentaries on my
part even on things that are not
of public interest, and I worry
that he would misconstrue that
as extreme anger.
The tale of this mysterious
phone conversation is not my
making, and it didn’t come from
nothing. That is Ben’s firsthand
narrative of what allegedly took
place.
Davao city, Aparri ports
exceed April 2018 targets
TWO collection districts of
the Bureau of Customs (BOC)
have recorded a surplus in
their April collection amount-
ing to P12 million, the Bureau
announced Friday.
The BOC reported that the
ports of Aparri and Davao hit
their collection targets for this
month, based on the prelimi-
nary figures from the Bureau’s
Financial Service.
“Port of Aparri, the first port
to hit its target, collected P8
million against its P4 million
monthly target. The port has
a surplus of P5 million, 94%
higher than its April target,” it

said that the Investment Promo-
tions Agency (IPA) is the proper
source of such data and it is its
job to farm out the information to
So, why the deflection?
There are only two possibilities:
1) The mysterious phone pal does
not exist and the phone conversa-
tion is a made-up story; or 2) Ben
just doesn’t want to give a name
for reasons only known to him. If
the reason is the latter, doesn’t he
owe all of us an explanation on
why he cannot or won’t identify
this corrupt person?
And, based on what Ben
implied, why is my previous
commentary aimed at protect-
ing the governor of Misamis
Oriental who served during the
Estrada administration? Estrada
assumed the presidency in 1998
and was ousted in 2001. The
only governor at that time was
Antonio Calingin who, the last
time I checked, has moved to
a far-away place outside Min-
danao. If someone inquires if
the then governor subsequently
became a participant and about
the extent of his participation, if
he did become one, why is that
“protection”? Since when did re-
quiring more details and inquiries
about allegations of wrongdoing
become protection?
If a chit-chat dinner in a
very public place that took place
in the distant past long before
or after a politician has served
as governor is evidence that
the former official is enjoying
some sort of protection, then
would it be safe to say that Ben
is protecting everyone he has
dinner with? It really doesn’t
follow. C’mon, Ben, seriously?
Breakfasts, lunches and dinners
are what normal people do in a
civilized society.
In my commentary, I asked
if Ben relayed the information
to the then governor (in this
case, Calingin). If he did, how
did the then governor respond?
If Calingin was told about it, did
he reject or accept the offer? Did
he pay up or haggle over the price
with the influential peddler who
had an offer to fix his problem
with the audit commission? What
said.
“Port of Davao is the 2nd
collection district of the Bu-
reau of Customs to hit the col-
lection target for April, collect-
ing a surplus of P7 million,”
the BOC added.
Commissioner Isidro Lap-
ena commended the efforts of
the Port of Davao and Port of
Aparri making the ports “an
example to all other ports not
just to hit the target but to ex-
ceed it.
The report also said that as
early as 4:45 p.m. of April 19,
a week before the end of the
collection month, Collection
concerned agencies.
“I don’t know where they got
it,” San Pascual said. “IPAs are
the ones supposed to be submit-
ting either to the DOF for the tax
incentives, and tax incentives as
well for the other investment data
to the NEDA (National Econom-
ic and Development Authority).”
DOF data reportedly showed
that PEZA-registered companies
benefitted from P66.6 billion
worth of income tax holidays,
special income tax rates, and
customs duties as well as the
P168.7-billion in incentives on
value added taxes.
Meanwhile, San Pasqual de-
fended the benefits that have
exactly was Calingin’s problem
and what was the outcome?
Fairness dictates that these
questions should be asked be-
cause the reputation of a man,
although unnamed but clearly
identifiable, was dragged into this
anecdote by Ben. I have pointed
out that a non-participant cannot
be asked questions about that
supposed phone conversation
especially if he is unaware that it
took place. But since it was Ben
who made this public disclosure,
then he may be asked for more
details and questions. Extraor-
dinary claims simply require
extraordinary evidence.
In the strictest sense, I have
never been Ben’s mentor who
is many years my senior. That
claim gave me more goose-
bumps. All these years, not once
has he spent eight hours with
me in the newsroom or during
fieldwork. I never taught him
to invent anecdotes. He is not a
reporter. He is not a journalist. He
is his own man. And so, when he
claimed that I mentored him, that
is an exaggeration. But I have cri-
tiqued his opinion pieces just as I
have just critiqued his work now
about this phone-conversation
narrative. Editing and critiquing
are what editors do aside from
trying to make sentences coher-
ent and libel-case proof.
It is true that he has sought
my advice on certain subjects
in his column, and even on per-
sonal matters that have nothing
to do with column writing, the
type of which are confidential.
My advices were mere advices,
and never dictation. One of the
column writing-related advices I
repeatedly gave him was on how
to be careful in using sources
because a columnist may not
state that “somebody said that
another somebody is like this or
that” or that “somebody texted
me” or that “somebody promised
to give me documents” without
ever showing any page. No,
columnists may not do that and

end, he would be accountable to
his readers. That is fair enough.
Where was I when Ben was
told by a fellow media practitioner
that he might as well stop writing
a column after he said and gen-
eralized that the news media are
crooked or something to that ef-
fect? The context of “stop” was on
why he was still writing a column
when, with sweeping accusations,
he was belittling and smearing
mainstream media, including
the very paper that provides him
space, and why, time and again,
he claims to represent this sector
even on official functions without
any authorization? The answer to
his question on where I was when
he was given this in-your-face re-
sponse to his attacks on the main-
stream media is this: Well, I was
editing his columns, including one
that was meant to slander me, and
protecting him and the entire news
organization from potential libel
suits arising from his columns and
his freedom to state even the most
stupidest things.
Not once did he complain
or asked for an erratum. Or, he
could have written an erratum
himself as what most columnists
do if there were mistakes. Based
on my recollection, that never
happened. And so, it baffles

albums. In the parody, de Leon
narrated his experience with
his sweetheart while they were
“namamasyal sa Luneta” at a
time when the singer, I suppose,
was having a concert there. In
the end, he introduced his date to
Puno, and then his date left him
for the singer. And then de Leon
asked something like “Eh, bakit
nakikinig pa rin ako sa kanta ni
Rico Puno? Eh di, g*go ako.”
Going back -- exactly which
part of what I wrote last Monday
does Ben wish to overthrow
because he strongly disagrees
with it?
What’s up, Mr. Somebody?
You can’t handle a decent public
conversation? It looks to me like
Ben, behaving like a child in a
grown-up’s body, attempted a de-
flection by throwing everything
on his path against the one who
is testing his anecdote because
he cannot argue intelligently and
wiggle out of the situation he is in
now. This awkward situation Ben
is in right now is his own doing.
What childish tantrum is this?
The lesson here is simple:
Do not invent or fabricate or
exaggerate anecdotes especially
when these can’t be substantiated
because the moment a reader
asks you to tell the whole story
and provide the details, mag-

end up telling more fairy tales
