Activity Title __Sink or Float? _________________________

Utah Core Standard:

 Standard 2, Objective 1
Earth and Space Science. Students will gain an understanding of Earth and Space
Science through the study of earth materials, celestial movement, and weather.
o Objective 1
Investigate the natural world including rock, soil and water.
 Standard 3, Objective 2
Physical Science. Students will gain an understanding of Physical Science
through the study of the forces of motion and the properties of materials
o Objective 2
Analyze objects and record their properties.

Objective (s):

Students will learn which objects sink or float and why this happens. They will
learn about density and how it relates to an object’s buoyancy.

Learning Outcomes: (What do you expect students to master as a result of your lesson?)

 Students will be able to identify if an object is “more dense than water” or “less
dense than water”.
 Students will understand why objects sink or float.
 Students will be able to define the terms: sink, float, and buoyancy.

Instructional Procedures:

Explicit Instruction/ Teacher Modeling:

 I will inform students about sinking and floating.
 Show them a tub filled with water and the objects that will be tested.
 Define the words sink, float, density, and buoyancy.
 I will have students guess which object will sink and which will float as I drop
each object into the water.
 As I do this, the students will tell me whether they think the object is more, or
less dense than water.
Guided Practice/ Interactive Modeling:
 I will let students work with their groups at their work stations.
 Students will test object at a time and will determine if it is more, or less dense
than water.
 I will walk around the classroom to see if students have understood the concept
and answering any questions they might have.
 Clean up and put away materials.
Independent Working Time:
 I will hand out the Sink or Float? #1 worksheet and the Buoyancy worksheet.
 Read out the instructions and ask students if they have any questions.
 Once students are working, I will walk around the classroom to assist struggling
students.

Materials:

 Small plastic tubs

 Water
 A variety of objects that will both sink and float in water, like scissors, spoons,
paper clips, pencils, etc.
 Paper towels
 Sink or Float? #1 worksheet
 Sink or Float? #2 worksheet
 Buoyancy worksheet

Family Connections: (take home activity)

Students will take home the Sink or Float? #2 worksheet to teach their parents
what they learned in class and complete the worksheet together at home.

Assessment Plan: (how do you plan to assess whether or not students mastered the
skill/concept?)

I will asses the students understanding during the Interactive Modeling and their
Independent Working Time. As they test each object to see if it sinks or floats and as
they complete the worksheets, I will walk around to see how well they are doing, I will
ask them question to seen if they have mastered the topic and will later review their
worksheets determine if they have mastered the concept.
