IS13008 Licensing NV or VSHD Transmitters for
HD PowerBoost (By the customer while in the field)
INFORMATION SHEET
1 INTRODUCTION
This document describes how Nautel customers can license a Nautel NV or VSHD
transmitter to support HD PowerBoost while the transmitter is in the field.

1.1 Equipment Affected

This procedure applies to NV or VSHD transmitters featuring NAE103, NAE104, or NAE105
exciters that have not yet had HD PowerBoost activated.

1.2 Responsibility for Implementation of Procedure

This procedure should be carried out by qualified station maintenance personnel who are
familiar with NV Series or VSHD transmitters.

1.3 Scheduling
This procedure may be implemented at the nearest convenience of station maintenance
personnel, after an HD PowerBoost activation code has been received from Nautel.

1.4 Manpower Requirements

It is estimated that implementing this modification will require 30 minutes to complete. Note
that it is necessary for the transmitter to be placed in an off-air status for the duration of this
procedure.

1.5 Special Tools/Test Equipment

Along with standard hand tools the following test equipment will be required. Review the
procedure to determine which items apply.

• PC or laptop to connect to the HD exciter.

• Nautel provided HD PowerBoost activation code.
• RS232 Serial Cable (if necessary).
• Terminal emulation program such as Tera Term or PuTTY.
• Nautel IS10001 and IS11002.

NOTE
Nautel recommends that customers intending to license and activate HD PowerBoost also
upgrade the corresponding transmitter software to version 4.x. Upgrading the software will
negate the need to reference IS11002, as HD PowerBoost is user configured within the
transmitter “Presets” menu featured in the 4.x version. This presets configuration is not available
in earlier versions of the transmitter software.

1.6 Publications Affected

This modification does not affect the associated transmitter documentation.

NOTE
It is recommended that customers confirm that an HD PowerBoost activation code has been
received from Nautel prior to undertaking the licensing procedure.

2.0 LICENSING PROCEDURE
The following procedure should only be performed after an HD PowerBoost activation code
has been received from the Nautel Customer Service department. Activate each applicable
exciter as follows:

(a) Record the HD PowerBoost activation code that was received from Nautel and the
corresponding exciter serial number for possible future reference.

(b) Connect the PC or laptop via serial cable to the exciter CONSOLE port.

(c) Open the terminal emulation program (e.g., Tera Term or PuTTY) and configure the
serial settings as depicted in Figure 1-1.

(d) Click <OK>.

NOTE
Terminal Emulation programs typically are free, open source software that is generally
available for download at tech media websites such as cnet.com or softpedia.com.

5.0 POST LICENSING OPERATION
After all applicable exciters have had HD PowerBoost licensed and activated, it is
recommended that the following procedures be executed in order to maximize the utility of
Nautel’s HD PowerBoost technology:

(a) An AC cycle of the exciter should be performed.

(b) Refer to IS10001 to optimize IBOC performance and IS11002 to configure
PowerBoost presets.
