This document1 accompanies the website Excel Tables, Pivots, and Slicers. It is an assignment you
can follow to create the following:
• An Excel table based on a data list in the project file
• A pivot table based on the table
• A pivot chart based on the pivot table
• 2 slicers based on the pivot table

The Project File


Get the project file, excel-tables-pivots-slicers-project-file.xlsx, from the Assignment page here.

The Assignment
Using sample data from the excel-tables-pivots-slicers-project-file, you will do the tasks listed on
page 2. You’ll create a table, pivot table, pivot chart, and two slicers.
Use the various resources found throughout the website to learn or refresh what you already know.
When you’re done with the assignment, your Practice Project worksheet should look similar to this:

From the project file (see above), use the sample data on the Practice Project tab as your source
data for creating an Excel table.

1. Create an Excel table from the data in A3:C11.

a. Do Not overwrite or convert the starting data. Create a new Excel table in E3.

b. Format column G as currency data type. Expand the column if necessary.

2. Create a pivot table using the new table as the source data.
Place the pivot table in cell I3. Place data as follows:
a. Make Region as the first row.
b. Make Quarter as the second row.
c. Sales as ∑ Values.
d. Format the pivot table in tabular form.
e. Format column K as currency data type. Expand the column if necessary.

3. Create a pivot chart using the pivot table as the source.


a. Select the Column chart style.
b. Drag the chart to position the upper left corner in cell M3.
c. Change chart title to Sales by Region.
d. Delete the legend.

4. Create two slicers from the pivot table for Region and Quarter.
a. Place each to the right of the table.
b. Resize the slicers:
i. Region H 1.6” x W 1.4”
ii. Quarter H 1.0” x W 1.4”
c. Position the slicer for quarter under the slicer for region.
d. Test the slicers by clicking the buttons.
Data in pivot table and the pivot chart should update as you select the slicers.

That’s it! You’ve created an Excel table, a pivot table, a pivot chart, and two slicers.
