Maritime Muslim Academy Profile

Maritime Muslim Academy (MMA) is an independent educational institution
based on Islamic principles, whose mission is to educate students intellectually,
physically, emotionally and socially in a trusting and caring Islamic
environment. The Academy offers standard educational programs like any
other school in Canada and also offers Quran, Arabic and the basic teaching in
Islamic beliefs, principles and values.

The Academy was founded in August of 1984 to serve the Muslim community
in the Halifax/Dartmouth area. It is one of the earliest Islamic schools
established in Canada and is the only Islamic school in Atlantic Canada.
Initially called the Halifax/Dartmouth Islamic School, it later changed its
name to the Maritime Muslim Academy. MMA offers private educational
services to students from September to June, a total of 195 teaching days/year,
and provides fulltime teaching at all stages of education: Preschool,
Elementary, Junior High and Senior High. English is the main language of
instruction, however Arabic and French are taught as second languages.
MMA’s education is consistent with standards established by the Canadian
Government. More specifically, the Academy is committed to teaching the
curriculum as prescribed by the Nova Scotia Department of Education.

Since it was established 22 years ago, the Academy has grown considerably.
Currently, over 120 full time students are enrolled. In 1996 the Academy
moved its facility from Dartmouth to a new location in Halifax, where two
buildings were purchased to accommodate the increasing number of students.
Our facilities are equipped with a new Library, Computer, Science and Arts
labs. Students of the Academy enjoy a variety of extra-curricular activities such
as team sports, field trips, swimming, bowling, rock climbing and several clubs
in the subject of science, arts, literature, drama etc.

The very first MMA High School student graduated in 2002. This year, grade
12 class graduated and we are very proud to announce that all of our graduates
have been accepted to Canadian universities with Scholarship Awards.

The Academy does not receive financial support from any government or other
funding agencies. It is a non-profit charitable organization registered with the
federal government of Canada. MMA is governed by a Board of Directors of
elected parents and other members of our local Muslim community.
