Building Background Knowledge:
Teacher will ask students the following questions:
- Can you name some verbs?
TW listen to students response, then ask:
- Ok, now turn to your shoulder partner and talk about something
that you did yesterday.
TW listen to students discuss, then:
- Great, now does anyone want to share what they discussed with
their partner?
TW list their ideas on the board.

TW introduce the idea of past tense verb, by asking:


- What do you think a Past Tense Verb is?
TW ask students what verbs they think are past tense verbs
SW raise hands to answer
TW use follow up question to see if students know the present tense of
the verb they chose; Answers will be written on board

TW Explain that often to turn a verb into a past tense verb you add either
-d or -ed based on the word
TW ask students to point out those endings on the verbs they stated that
they did yesterday & what they believed a past tense verb was
TW explain that there are irregular past tense however today we are
focusing on traditional past tense endings (-d and -ed)

TW play short video on Verb Tenses to help reinforce the concept

Time: 5 minutes Presentation (explicitly describe) MODELING/I Do


● TW demonstrate how to circle the correct verb tense on projector,
using a simple sentence. Example: I ______ my dog yesterday.
Circle either “walk” or “walked”
● TW verbalize thought process as she is going through the steps.
● TW discuss two sentences, while discussing verb tense: I will
close eyes. Yesterday, I closed my eyes.
● TW discuss the verbs and the verb tense in each sentence: past
and present.

Time: 10 - 15 Practice (explicitly describe) GUIDED PRACTICE /We Do

● SW begin working on their handouts.
● SW add the ending -ed or -d to verb to make the sentence
correct.

and they are circling the correct word.

● TW demonstrate how to write a sentence on their own, by asking
students for past tense (or present tense) verb suggestions.
● TW show students how to conjugate the verb (if needed) and write
a sentence on the board.
● TW ask students for a few verb examples for the class to use, as
they begin to think of ideas that they will use to write their own
sentences, while writing ideas on board.
● SWBAT discuss their ideas with their table partners, before putting
their thoughts to paper.
● SW have opportunity to add an additional 1-2 sentences that they
have created, using the correct verb tense.
● TW walk around to ensure that students have understanding of
lesson.

Time: 5 minutes Review (explicitly describe)


● TW ask students for examples of at least 5 past tense verbs. SW
give examples of words that they have worked with during the
lesson
● TW ask students what two endings were discussed during the
lessons, they should turn to their shoulder partner, and do a quick
double check, before turning back to teacher.
● SW raise their hands before answering -ed and -d.
● TW then discuss the key vocabulary from the lesson.
