BENDING MOMENT PART 1

1. OBJECTIVE

 To examine how bending moment varies with an increasing point load.

 To calculate the bending moment develops.
 To find the relationship between different load and distant of support.

2. THEORY

W1

L1 X

Lx

RA X RB

Bending moment at section x-x is :

B.M x-x = RA Lx – W1 (Lx-L1)

OR B.M x-x = RB Lx

When the load is to the right of x-x :

B.M x-x = RA Lx
3. APPARATUS

 Set of Bending Moment in a Beam

 Digital Force Display
 Load
 Ruler

4. PROCEDURE
i. The apparatus involve in this experiment use an electronic system intrigued with
software to apply load and calculate the bending moment. Due to which it is very
important to follow the steps involve in this experiment in following presented
order.
ii. Set up the computer software using the guide provided with the apparatus and set it
to virtual experiment mode.
iii. In property section box, select the option of variable hanger load
iv. From the tool box area take a load of 100 g and replace it with 0 gram at the cut
section.
v. Diagram of the force applied and the graph of the resultant force will appear of
screen which conform the load replacement.
vi. Software will automatically gather all the data of experiment and save it in memory.
Repeat the third step with 200, 300, 400 and 500 grams and collect the data related
to each experiment.
vii. Final result provided by software and manually calculation made were compared
using graphs.
5. RESULTS
Beam span = ……………mm
Distance of the bending section from the left support, LX = ……………mm
Distance of the load from the left support, L1 = ……………mm
Distance of load cell from the centre of the beam cross section = .……………mm
