LESSON PLAN

Name: Rachel Slaven

Grade Level: 6
School: Chester Middle School
Date: 12/6/2017
Time: 1st Period, 2nd Period

Reflection from prior lesson:

In the previous lesson, students began working on the adverb review worksheet. Some
of the students are still really struggling to understand the concept of adverbs. In the
previous lesson we also began working on nonfiction. The class needs more work on
answering comprehension questions.

Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.6.1
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when
writing or speaking.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.6.1
Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as
inferences drawn from the text.

Lesson Objectives:
1. After reviewing adverbs as a whole class, students will complete the Kahoot! quiz
with at least an 80%.
2. After reading the newsela article, students will answer the 4 comprehension
questions.

Materials Needed: Student spelling workbooks, student averb review worksheets,

student chrome books, and a pencil.

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:

There are 12 students in this class. There are no learners on IEPs. As we get closer to
Christmas break, the more restless the students are becoming. One of the students in
the class just had a parent pass away, so we are adjusting class work accordingly.
Another student in the class has been struggling with his work, so we are making
modifications as we assign work.
A. The Lesson

1. Introduction (include time allotment)

● getting attention- I will welcome the students to class, and then ask them to
get out their spelling books.
● relating to past experience and/or knowledge- I will remind students that
we have been working really hard on understanding adverbs.
● creating a need to know- Students will need to know adverbs, as we will be
having a test over this topic on Friday.
● sharing objective, in general terms- I will say: “Today we are going to
review adverbs again, and then we will continue to read nonfiction.”

2. Content Delivery (include time allotment & instructional methodologies)

● Spelling- We will correct page 71 in the student spelling workbooks. Once we
have done this, students will begin working on page 72 in their books. I will do
one example from each section with the students. I will then give the students
about 5 minutes to work on this page.
● Adverb Review- We will be correcting the adverb review from the previous day.
We will go through each question as a class, so that the students are able to
study for their test on Friday. Students will enter a class code into kahoot.it and
they will enter their name. Then we will begin playing the game.
● Adverb Review Game- To help the students continue to review adverbs, we will
play a review game on Kahoot! There will be 20 questions that students will go
through and answer. This provides a fun way for students to practice adverbs.
● Newsela Article (if time)- We are going to continue working on reading
nonfiction. Students will open up to the website www.newsela.com, and will read
the article that I assigned them. We will begin reading this article as a class. I
anticipate that we will not finish this today. Once we have finished reading it,
students will work through a short quiz to check their comprehension. I will be
able to see results directly in my account.

3. Closure (include time allotment)

● Discussion- To wrap this lesson up we will have a brief conversation about what
nonfiction means. We will also discuss the quiz questions if time allows.
B. Assessments Used
I will be using formal and informat assessment. I will use informal assessment when we
are having a discussion. I will be able to gague how well students are understanding
nonfiction. I will be using formal assessment when the students complete the Kahoot!
quiz. I will also use formal assessment when the students take the nonfiction article
quiz.

C. Differentiated Instruction
There is one student who I will modify the reading assignment for. On the website that
we will be reading off of, the teacher is able to change the lexile level, so I will do that
for one student.
