C4i4 Lab Pune: One of the Four Common

Engineering Facility Centres (CEFC) in India
S AMARTH (Smart Advanced Manufacturing and Rapid Transformation
Hub) Udyog is a government of India initiative to foster awareness,
education and proliferation of ‘Industry 4.0’ - next industry revolution.
The Department of Heavy Industry’ (DHI) initiative encompasses
manufacturers, suppliers and customers as its main stakeholders. The
experiential and demonstration centres for Industry 4.0 have been
established to spread awareness about Industry 4.0 amongst the Indian
manufacturing industries. Four such centres (C4i4 Lab Pune, IIT-D - New
Delhi, IISc - Bengaluru and CMTI - Bengaluru) having unique identity for
spreading awareness and branding were established under SAMARTH
Udyog. It is emphasized that these centres would have resource sharing,
common platform of industry 4.0 and network each other’s resources
so that the utilization of resources is maximised.
C4i4 Lab Pune is the one amongst the four Common Engineering
Facility Centres (CEFC) established under this initiative. The journey for
instituting the C4i4 Lab Pune began in October 2016 with a brainstorming
session amongst its key stakeholders. The session lead to a multi-

having participation of CEOs of over 125 industries. This was followed by
exploratory discussions with Tata Strategic Management Group (TSMG), 3,000 +

with the formation of core team for preparing a proposal to DHI. A Industry 4.0 Immersion
company was formed for this purpose and in October 2017, the centre
got approval from the DHI. The centre with a testing lab and knowledge 10,000+

Editorial

Welcome to Future!
I am immensely delighted to interact with you all through the
inaugural issue of this unique communication channel of C4i4 Lab
Pune. Starting from April 2018, it will be a bi-monthly periodical to
share the knowledge. Centre for Learning in Industry 4.0 (C4i4) -
Pune was inaugurated by Mr. Rahul Kirloskar, Executive Chairman of
Kirloskar Pneumatic Company Ltd. on December 11, 2017 to increase
awareness on Industry 4.0 and hand-holding the SMEs to plan and
implement relevant Industry 4.0 projects. I also take pride that Pune
has got one of the four common engineering facility centres (CEFC)

MSMEs and SMEs are still under the impression that Industry 4.0 is a
distant phenomenon. C4i4 Lab Pune intends to change this particular
mind set of industry by adopting various Industry 4.0 practices
in Indian context. We must understand that the ongoing fourth
industrial revolution is not just about automation but far more than
that. While many manufacturers are aware of the terms like Big Data,
Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Cyber Physical Interface etc., most
of them are struggling at the application stage. Hence, hand-holding
of big and small companies of diversified industry domains is going
to play a crucial role in successfully transforming manual or semi-
automated factories into smart factories. The founding members of
C4i4 Lab Pune exhibits a perfect blend of manufacturers, platform
providers and educational institutes. Incidentally, all these supporters
are willing to extend their best practices and domain expertise with
other industries to ultimately build an ecosystem where everyone
can leverage by adopting smart manufacturing processes.
The outside world is fast moving in this direction. According to
