Introduction

RESEARCH TOPIC: Impact of technology on education in form six of SJCSJ.

Problem Statement

To what extent does the usage of technology have on the Form six students of St Joseph’s

Convent St Joseph

Background

In the early days of education till very recently the main source of knowledge came from books.

If one wanted to gain knowledge of any topic they would have to go to a library of some sort and

search for a book which contains the wanted information. However since the dawn of the

technological era and the implementation of the internet gathering needed information has

increasing became easier over the years and seem to be easier in the years to come. This

correlates with the increasing intelligence of students as teaching method evolved due to the

usage of this technology whilst teaching.

This phenomenon of technology has been adopted by the education system locally, as the

government has funded numerous technological devices like laptops, projectors etc in schools.

This has been especially evident in the school of St Joseph Convent St Joseph. The school’s form

six department epitomizes this high usage of technology using the internet and such for works on

internal assessments and exchanging vital notes with teachers, hence the impact of this

technology on the form six demography will be highlighted in this research.

Statement of Problem

Students have embraced the era of technology gracefully by using it as a great resource of

information and have been widely used. This study seeks to explore exactly how useful

technology can be for students of form 6 at SJCSJ as the usage has been controversially

scrutinized.

Research Questions:

1. How has technology impacted the teaching process at schools?

2. How has technology made the learning process faster at schools?

3. What is the major drawback of the use of technology?

4. How has technology impacted on the students studying?

Purpose of research

The purpose of this study is to show that with the increase in technology and its use in education

students are gradually becoming smarter over its implementation. This study seeks to determine

how technology improves the learning curve and to determine it can be increased the future. As

well as lessen the stigma put around students and their mistreatment of the technology during

school hours.

Educational Value

This research will show how technology has helped with the better relaying of information to

students and provide information to the ministry to develop and gain financial backing in

expanding the use of technology in teaching and learning processes in schools across the nation

and thus heightening the standard and efficiency within the educational system.
Definition of terms

Technology – The branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means

and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as

industrial arts, engineering, applied science and pure science.

Learning – the acquisition of knowledge or skills through study, experience or being taught.
Literature review

Computers have replaced chalkboards as the go-to tool in classrooms today. And it’s not

just happening in higher education; technology is part of education for children of all ages. It’s

also a part of their daily lives. According to a research study by Common Sense Media published

in October 2011, “computer use is pervasive among very young children, with half (53%) of all 2

to 4 year olds having ever used a computer, and nine out of 10 (90%) 5 to 8 year olds having

done so.”

The dawn of new age technology has been a catalyst for easier learning within schools

and secondary schools. This phenomenon has posed a greater opportunity for students and

teachers passing on knowledge to their students but also new challenges simultaneously. The use

of the internet especially with form 6 students has flourished their researching skills with the vast

amount of information available at their disposal, having access to scholarly works, books, news

etc. As newer more powerful technologies are now available to significantly augment the skills

necessary to convert data into information and transform information into knowledge. Allowing

for easier interpretation and understanding of work intended. This is done by the stimulation of

the other senses such as audio and increased visual opening the lesson to benefit more learning

types. It also can aid in studying allowing the whole internet to be source of data that can aid in

in understanding of work for various learning types.

Not only has it enhanced their research and learning abilities, but also their

communication with other students and teachers wishing to exchange notes through social media

however, this comes with a consequence as it may in turn be seen as a distraction according to a

study done by South University in 2012. Students may venture of into various social media site
and games and loose site of their work. Also, the expenses to incorporate modern technology is

quite high whether it be a laptop or a computer lab thousands of dollars has to be spent.

Data analysis

Out of all forty students surveyed the most common ages were seventeen to eighteen

years of age. Hence showing that the student is around the same general age. With 14 doing

sciences, 12 doing business, 8 doing modern studies and 6 doing languages.

Pie chart one shows us that 20 of the 40 students surveyed directly benefit from the

implementation of technology whilst, 12 students occasionally benefit and 8 students who see no

direct benefit toward them.

However, on figure 3 it can be see that 9 people believe the traditional methods are better

in teaching than technology and 18 people believe it can occasionally be better whilst, 15 people

believe that technology is the better method

From figure 4 it can be seen that 18 students use technology all the during studying whilst

16 students occasionally use it and 6 students do not use it during studying at all.
From Pie chart 2 it can be seen that 10 people agree that technology is more beneficial

than books whilst studying and 4 said it wasn’t whilst 26 said it was only better than books

occasionally.

DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS

CONCLUSION

It can concluded that technology has a definite impact on the teaching in schools allowing

for better teaching and hence better comprehension of the work learnt in the school of

St. Joseph’s convent St. Joseph. Through the use of technology a student can better understand

due to the different forms of learning presented such as the use of videos (appeals to the

student’s audio visual senses), power point (allows for a book like experience but more concise

and directed towards the topic) and many more. But it has also shown its weak points such as its

cost and the vast nature allowing the student to stray and get distracted during learning or

teaching.
LIMITATION

Whilst making this portfolio there were many limitations faced.

1. Finding reliable data to you as a basis of my study due to the numerous controversial,

unexperienced data samples present making it more difficult due to the amount of reading

needed to determine the samples validity.

2. The collecting and documenting of questioners once the survey has taken place due it

people loosing or misplacing questioners.
