CE 372A: REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN

SEMESTER II: 2017-18

Homework #7: Design of RC Slender Columns – Limit State Method

Due March 27, 2018

Prob.#1

A column of unsupported height of 5 m as shown in figure is made

of M25 concrete and Fe415 steel. The square column section (350×
350 mm) is reinforced with 4-20 mm longitudinal bars and 10 mm
ties. Use a 40 mm clear cover to the ties. Determine the adequacy of
the section for the factored axial load of 400 kN and moment of
100 kNm considering slenderness effects. Assume that the column
is pin-supported, and that the bending moments are the same at
both ends. The column is bent in single curvature.

Prob.#2

The figure shows an exterior column in a multistory frame. The

dimensions are center to center of joints. The beams are 300 mm
wide by 450 mm in overall depth. The building includes a service
core which resists the majority of lateral loads. The loads and 4m
moments on column AB are:
A
Factored Dead Load:
Axial force = 750 kN
8m
Moment at top = 75 kNm
Moment at bottom = 75 kNm B
Factored Live Load:
Axial force = 900 kN 4m
Moment at top = 100 kNm
Moment at bottom = 80 kNm
6m
For the square column size of 450 mm, determine the
reinforcement. Also design stirrups for the shear force. Use M25
concrete and Fe415 steel.

Prob.#3

Repeat the Prob. #2, if the frame is not braced (by the service
4m
core) and behaves like a sway frame (as shown in figure).
