Murder Mystery Project

By: Amanda Oppegard, Emily Elder, Mitchell Thaeler, Dustin Davis

Summary of the Case
From our findings through the many experiments we have conducted we found that
Sam Sophomore and Nancy Normal both are prime suspects in the murder of
Carlton Comet. We conducted investigations and experiments into the fingerprints,
blood, and murder note left at the crime scene.
Who was the murderer?
We think that both Sam Sophomore and Nancy Normal are responsible for
murdering Carleton Comet. We know that the fingerprint at the scene of the crime
matched Nancy Normals fingerprint. Also the pen found at the crime scene belonged
to both Nancy and Sam.
Fingerprint Results:
At the crime scene the only fingerprint that matched was Nancy Normals which
leads us to believe she is a prime suspect.
Ink Chromatography Results:
For the ink chromatography, we took a sample of the letter that was left at the
crime scene, dipped the bottom of it in alcohol, and waited thirty minutes for the
alcohol to take effect. Then we took the pens that were at the crime scene, drew on a
piece of paper, then did the same steps that we did for the letter, then compared the
results to the letter. The result that looked the most like the result from the letter
was the pen that was used for the letter. We found out that the pen used for the
letter in the crime scene was Nancy Normal’s and Sam Sophomore.
Blood Type Results:
We believe that Sam sophomore and Nancy Normal are the murders of Carleton
Comet. We think this because the blood that we collected from crime scenes matched
Sam Sophomores and Nancy Normals.
Pedigree Findings Nancy Normal
From a pedigree you can find out:

- Who people are related to

- Symptoms that each suspect has

- Nancy’s father died from Huntington’s disease

so this could mean that Nancy could possibly
have Huntington’s as well

- Nancy adores Fred Flimmer who is another

suspect of the murder case
Pedigree Findings Sam Sophomore
- Both of Sam’s parents died from Huntington’s
disease so that means that Sam also has the disease

- While Sam’s father was dying his mother had an

affair with Thomas Sandstone
Karyotype Results:
We took the DNA from the crime scene to make a Karyotype for the crime scenes
and compared them to samples collected from all of the suspects helping to determine
that Sam Sophomore and Nancy Normal both had 3 sex chromosomes that matched
to the crime scenes which lead us to believe that they were in some way related so
we looked into their pedigrees and found out that they are in fact related.
DNA Fingerprinting Results:
We took the blood from the crime scene and turned it into DNA and used a method
to run the DNA through a gel and correlated it to a color that in turn correlated to a
letter in the DNA sequence and when compared Sam Sophomore and Nancy Normal
matched Scene 1 and Carleton Comet matched Scene 2.
Why did Nancy Normal and Sam Sophomore Kill
Carleton Comet?
Sam Sophomore has Huntington’s disease and Nancy may
have it as well.

Huntington’s Disease-an inherited disease that causes the

progressive breakdown of nerve cells in that brain. It has a
broad impact on a person’s abilities and usually results more in
movement, thinking, and psychiatric disorders.
Symptoms of Huntington’s and What Could Have
Lead Them to Killing Carleton
Amnesia/ Memory Loss- Both of them could have committed the crime and
then forgotten that they did it the next day.

Hallucinations- May have been having hallucinations which could have caused
them to get mad and kill Carleton.

Anxiety, Paranoia & Depression- Because Carleton Comet did change his
name from Thomas Standstone and then after Sam’s dad died, Sam’s mom had an
affair with Thomas/Carleton. This could have made him mad that his mom would do
such a thing and Sam knew that to end this, he had to kill him.

Mood Swings & Compulsive Behavior- May have gotten really mad at
something and decided to take it out on Carleton.
Sam & Nancy Both Should Be Charged With 1st
Degree Murder
This is 1st degree murder because it was planned. Some evidence of this is the note,
the pen, the fingerprints, and in the original outline of who the suspects are it said
that Sam Sophomore has recently been seen with Nancy Normal. This could further
prove at this time that when they were together, they could have been plotting out
how/when/where they were going to kill Carleton. Nancy killed Carleton because
Nancy’s fingerprint was located in the first crime scene so that means that Sam was
the accomplice which means that he helped Nancy murder Carleton, but he wasn’t
actually the one that killed him.
