HSELOF Goal: Child expresses creativity in thinking and communication.
Objective 1:
The children will enhance creative thinking skills by describing their turkey designs.
Objective 3:
The children will develop skills of imagination by utilizing their handprints as feathers for the turkey.
A. Motivation
I will show the children a visual of a family eating at a table and a visual of a turkey and ask them what holiday
am I thinking of.
B. Steps
1. I will enter the classroom and ask the children to come to the circle area.
2. I will show the children 2 pictures, one of a family eating at a table and another of a turkey.
3. I will remind the children that we are in the month of November.
4. I will ask the children to solve this riddle using the pictures "I am thinking of a holiday in November where
families get together, say what they are thankful for and eat turkey."
5. I will give the children a chance to solve the riddle.
6. I will ask the children if they know why we eat turkey on Thanksgiving
7. I will explain to the children that we eat turkey on Thanksgiving because colonist used to hunt wild turkeys
in the fall so the president decided to make the turkey the meal of choice after declaring Thanksgiving a
holiday.
8. I will tell the children that today we are going to make turkeys using the handprints we traced.
9. I will assist the children back to their seats and instruct them to start cutting out the handprints we traced.
10. After they cut out the handprints I will let them choose one of the turkey bodies I cut out, glue on the
eyes and decorate the rest of it however they want using the markers, crayons and the stickers I will provide
for them.
11. I will go around and ask the children questions about their turkeys as they design them such as
“Tell me about your turkey design?”
“What are you drawing on your turkey feathers?”
“Can you share your design with your friends sitting at your table?”
12. I will give the children each a popsicle stick after they are done with their turkeys and ask them to glue
the turkey onto the popsicle stick and tell them they can use it as a turkey puppet.
13. I will direct the children to throw away their scraps once they are done and go put their turkeys to dry.
14. I will ask the children to return back to the rug area and I will show them the Turkey Hokey Pokey dance
video by the Kiboomers.
Conclusion
I will play the video Turkey Hokey Pokey by the Kiboomers and allow the children to follow along with the
dancing turkey.
Transition
Once the children finish the dance video I will ask them to form a circle calls them by the color of their shirts
to go back to their seats and get ready for the next activity.
