Lesson Title: The Heart Subject: SBI3C

Unit Title: Anatomy of Mammals Time Required: 2 Days

Teacher Candidate: Emma Gordon Date: April 19/20
Mentor Teacher: Theresa Kolobaric Grade: 11 College

Learning Goals (What do you want the students to know or be able to do at the end of the lesson?)
- Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the structure, function, and interactions of the
circulatory system
- Students will be able to use appropriate terminology related to animal anatomy
- Students will be able to describe the anatomy of the circulatory system
- Students will be able to describe the physiology of the circulatory system
Success Criteria (What will you observe that tells you that students are successful?)
- I will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the structure, function, and interactions of the circulatory
system
- I will be able to use appropriate terminology related to animal anatomy
- I will be able to describe the anatomy of the circulatory system
- I will be able to describe the physiology of the circulatory system
Accommodations (How will you meet the needs of your students? What management strategies will you use?)
English as a Second Language:
- EA support, or peer mentor
Individual Action Plan:
- Accommodations only as specified on the student’s IEP – allowing for time, number of questions etc.
Curriculum Expectations (Which expectation is the focus for your instruction?)
Overall Expectations:
E3. Demonstrate an understanding of the structure, function, and interactions of the circulatory, digestive, and
respiratory systems of mammals
Specific Expectations:
E2.1 Use appropriate terminology related to animal anatomy
E3.1 Describe the anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, the mechanisms of blood pressure, and the
function of the spleen
Assessment (How will you know that the students have achieved the learning expectation? What assessment tool will you use?)
Assessment for Learning:
- Review Questions
- Heart Activity
- Homework
Assessment as Learning:
- Heart Activity
- Homework
Instructional Strategies (Which teaching strategies will you use? how will you group the students?
 Independent Work  Cooperative Learning  Summarizing & Note taking  Identifying similarities/differences
 Homework & Practice  Visual & Graphic Organizers  Questions  Generating & Testing Hypotheses
 Goal setting & Feedback  Problem Solving
Materials Key Questions
- PowerPoint - What are the three main functions of the heart?
- YouTube - How many chambers does the heart have?
- Student Notes - Which side of the heart carries deoxygenated blood and
- Heart Outline Diagram oxygenated blood?
- Markers

Instruction (How will the students develop the knowledge and /practice the skills?.)
Duration Activity/Task
Introduction (How will you engage and motivate the students?)
5 MIN - Review concepts discussed in the previous class – i.e. circulatory system components,
blood vessels, components of blood
- Introduce the topic of the day’s lesson – “The Heart” and provide notes for students to
complete throughout the lesson
Lesson Steps (Describe the sequence of the lesson.)
- Discuss the function of the heart
o 3 main functions – pumping blood, keeping blood separate, and keep blood
flowing in one direction
- Label the different parts of the heart (atrium, ventricles, the valves etc.) while
1 and ½ days explaining the pathway of blood flow through the heart
- Demonstrate the pathway of blood flow through the heart with the use of different
coloured arrows (blue for deoxygenated, red for oxygenated) and words
- Watch YouTube video – “Flow through the Heart: Circulatory System Physiology”
- Discuss the necessity of coronary arteries
- Examine the events during one heartbeat (the cardiac cycle) through words and images
Conclusion (How will you wrap-up the lesson?)
- Students will put their books away and get into groups of two
20 MIN o Each group will get a diagram of a heart outline
o Their task is to draw the pathway of blood flow through the heart to the body
and lungs with different coloured markers (blue and red) and label the heart to
the best of their memory
o To demonstrate what they know and what they need to improve upon
- After task is completed, students will be given homework question to review their
knowledge of the heart
