Part I. Traffic Control (20 points)

1) Identify the MUTCD Color codes and what each color means. What are the two
MUTCD colors that been reserved for future use?
• Black – regulation
• Blue – road user services, guidance, tourist information, and evacuation route.
• Brown – recreational and cultural interest area guidance.
• Coral – unassigned.
• Fluorescent Pink – incident management.
• Fluorescent Yellow/Green – pedestrian warning, bicycle warning, playground
warning, school bus and school warning.
• Green – indicated movements, permitted, direction guidance.
• Light Blue – unassigned.
• Orange – temporary traffic control.
• Purple – lanes restricted to use only by vehicles with registered electronic toll
collection (ETC) accounts.
• Red – stop or prohibition.
• White – regulation.
• Yellow – warning.
The two MUTCD colors that have been reserved for future use are coral and light
blue.

2) Visit the intersection of Palo Verde Road and Redina Street. Identify the signs within
50 ft of the intersection. Indicate the category, the corresponding MUTCD code, and
the meaning of each sign.
a) Category: Regulatory – Traffic Signal
i) MUTCD Code: R10-12 or R73-7 (CA)
ii) Meaning: At a controlled intersection, when the light is
green for traffic in your direction, and in the opposing
direction, you may turn left across the flow of opposing
traffic only where there is sufficient room between
vehicles to safely do so – the oncoming traffic has the
right of way.
b) Category: Regulatory – Turn and Lane Use
i) MUTCD Code: R3-4 or R73-3 (CA)

ii) Meaning: No U-Turns are permitted in the left-

turn lane.
c) Category: Regulatory – Mandatory Movement
i) MUTCD Code: R3-5L & R3-5R or R61-13 (CA)
ii) Meaning: Only the left two lanes and the right lane can make a turning
movement, the through movement is not permitted.
d) Category: Regulatory – Pedestrian & Bicycle
i) MUTCD Code: R9-3A & R9-3B
ii) Meaning: Prohibits pedestrians from crossing a roadway at
an undesirable location/in front of school where crowing is
not designated.
e) Category: Regulatory – Parking Regulation
i) MUTCD Code: R7-2A (12:00 NOON – 4:00PM) &
R7-5 (9:00AM – 9:00PM)
ii) Meaning: Governs the parking of vehicles during
allotted hours (ex. Street sweeping to discourage
parking congestion from CSULB).
f) Category: Guide – Street Name
i) MUTCD Code: D3-1 or G7-1 (D3) CA – Palo
Verde Ave & Rendina St
ii) Meaning: Guides and notifies vehicles of the
intersection’s cross-streets.
g) Category: Guide – Destination
i) MUTCD Code: D1-1 or D3-1
ii) Meaning: Guides and notifies vehicles that there is CSULB parking.
h) Bicyle Signs and other surrounding signs were not included due to measuring
a distance of over 50 ft. from intersection (via Google Earth and manually).
3) Determine the minimum requirement (height and lateral distance) for placement of
stop signs in business, commercial and residential area. How does it differ from that
of a rural area?
a) The minimum height requirement for stop signs in a business, commercial or
residential area is 7 feet, and the lateral height is 2 feet. For rural areas, the
minimum height is 5 feet and the lateral height is 12 feet.
b) Business, commercial, and residential stop signs are 10 feet closer to the curb than
in rural areas, and are also 2 feet taller than in rural areas.
4) Determine the minimum requirement for location and width of crosswalk in urban
intersection.
a) For an urban intersection the minimum gap requirement between the lines of a
crosswalk, when traverse lines are used, shall not be less than 6 feet or 1.8 meters.

When traverse lines are not present, and diagonal/longitudinal lines are used, a
crosswalk’s width shall be no less than 6 feet wide or 1.8 meters.
5) How far from the point of a hazard should the following signs be placed?
a) A “STOP ahead” warning sign on a road with posted speed limit of 55 mph?
i) 325 feet.
b) A “merge ahead” warning sign on a ramp with 85th percentile speed of 40 mph.
i) 670 feet.
