Additional Narrative Comments:
-They are having fun, but not necessarily getting the idea of the warm air. They are not doing it consistently, it is hard to
hear themselves—therefore they blow loudly to make that happen J . This is a typical problem, and will improve with
time. To help them, you can continue to have them play in smaller groups, and hear each one individually. When you
teach one of them, the rest will learn from that.
-“That was pretty good!” Student near me, “No it wasn’t.” Be careful when giving them an assessment. You can say,
“That was pretty good for your first try!” “This is pretty tricky, but I’m going to help you continue to get better!” Things
like that acknowledge that there is still room to grow J
-With students of all ages, think about engagement and class trajectory. How can you start with something that will
motivate them to learn this instrument and engage in your warm-air activity? How can you continue to provide
motivation?
-You are so calm and clear with them, asking them, “Can we try this a different way?” Very nice work adjusting to your
assessments on the spot. This was very effective and helped them improve.
-For these young students, you can add elements of movement, stuff from 511 (improvisation) will help them as well,
even after they know just one note. Take a look at the sample recorder lesson from 511 to help.
-You did a great job with these 4 graders. You were kind, confident, and caring.

- Goals: Work on sequencing. Start with engagement, move to new/challenge learning, review work, closure.
Strategies: add in sequencing steps in lesson plans in a way that makes sense.
