Have you signed up for this web-based presentation (3 hours/.3CEU's) Multiple

Sclerosis Outcome Measure Case Study? In this interactive case study, learners will
apply knowledge gained from readings to determine the most appropriate outcome
measures for a patient with MS along the continuum of care, from in-patient rehab to
out-patient care. Why not? It is inexpensive, evidence-based and presented by top
researchers in our field - Cohen, Potter and Sullivan.

Neurology PTA Advanced Proficiency Pathway

Task Force

Call for Task Force Members! Apply Today!

The ANPT Board of Directors is proposing an APTA Advanced Proficiency Pathway
(APP) for Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) with a focus in neurologic practice. We
are seeking ANPT members interested in being a part of a task force to aid in the
development of the Neurology APP to assist in development and recognition of
advanced knowledge and skills for PTAs in neurologic physical therapy. APPs already
exist for Acute Care, Cardiopulmonary, Orthopaedics, Pediatrics, Geriatrics, Oncology,
and Wound Management.

The purpose of the task force is to determine the expectations for advanced practice
by PTAs in neurologic physical therapy. Expectations for the task force include:

1. Development and implementation of a survey of ANPT membership to

clarify tasks that would constitute advanced practice for a PTA in neurologic
practice settings
2. Analysis of survey results
3. Determination of the expectations for advanced neurologic PTA practice.

Findings would then be given to APTA who will develop the APP. The time
commitment for serving on the task force is approximately 1 year. The task force will
be comprised of individuals with certification or significant experience in neurologic
physical therapy and familiarity with the role of the PTA in a variety of neurologic
practice settings. Characteristics of ANPT members that will be considered for the
task force include:

PTs with Neurologic Clinical Specialist certification

PTAs with at least 10 years of practice in a neurologic setting

Educators in PTA educational programs with neurologic focus
Researchers with survey experience
Practice supervisors/administrators who oversee PT's and PTA's in a neurologic
setting

Responsibilities of the task force include:

Disclosure of conflict of interest

Participation in all conference calls/meetings with a commitment to teamwork
and clear communication
Reading all relevant material and doing all necessary background work to fully
participate
Responding to e-mail communications in a timely fashion, completing all
personal assignments to meet deadlines
Maintaining confidentiality

If you are interested in serving on this task force, please

apply by April 30th, 2018 by submitting your application
at this link, and submit a current CV as a PDF or Word
document to dfell@southalabama.edu.

APTA Mission Statement Update!

Last June, the House of Delegates entrusted the Board of Directors to update and maintain the
association's mission statement.

THE GOAL?
To explore revisions to the existing mission statement, which had been adopted in 1993, to
ensure that it is contemporary and aligned with the vision statement that the House adopted in
2013.

The new mission statement reads:

"Building a community that advances the profession of physical therapy to
improve the health of society."

The purpose of our new mission statement is to convey that APTA is a place of engagement for
people with a shared interest in advancing physical therapist practice to make a meaningful
impact on the world around us.

As we begin communications on the new mission statement, we encourage you to share it

widely as well through your newsletters, social media channels, and in meetings.

NEXT is the leading-edge event for physical therapy professionals with

timely topics, the latest trends in technology, and exclusive access to the
profession's top leaders. The conference will be held June 27-30 in
Orlando, Florida. The speakers are noted experts and the sessions are
designed to directly benefit attendees, with advanced learning and best
practices to take home and act on immediately. Networking is also an
important part of this event; because it's smaller in scale, attendees will
have a chance to meet with many leaders in the field, network with peers
from around the country, and advance professional development.
Networking events
There will be many opportunities to network, including the First Timers' Event with
APTA President Sharon Dunn

Wednesday: First Timer's Event and opening reception in the exhibit hall
Thursday: Welcome coffee with the Early Career Team; poster presentations in
the exhibit hall
Friday: Networking coffee; poster presentations in the exhibit hall

important journey towards integrating the

movement system into clinical practice and
research.

In this issue, we also have a number of high quality

research articles. Baer and colleagues investigate
the effects of fatigue and role of brain-derived
neurotrophic factor on balance in individuals with
PD. In a randomized controlled trial, Gaikwad and
colleagues investigate the effect of progressive
gaze stability exercises on postural stability, motion
sensitivity, and anxiety in healthy young adults with
chronic motion sensitivity. Additionally, Gagnon and
Webb-Schoenewald provide a Clinical Point of
View commentary on the study by Gaikwad and
colleagues. Allison and colleagues examine the
effect of sensory-challenge balance exercises on
multisensory reweighting and clinical balance
measures in fall-prone older adults.

We also have two case series/case reports: Holleran and colleagues evaluated the
feasibility and preliminary short- and long-term impact of high-intensity variable
stepping practice in ambulatory participants for more than 1 year post-iSCI. Hartmann
and colleagues report on the use of errorless learning in a person with a concomitant
spinal cord injury and brain injury.

The IV STEP conference eBook is now available for purchase. Be sure to get this
great resource for clinical practice and educators that includes case narratives with
videos.

Congratulations to the 2018 Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy award winners .

Among them is JNPT Associate Editor Catherine Lang, who was honored with the
Excellence in Neurologic Research award.

JNPT would also like to extend a special thank you to our great team of reviewers and
editorial board members, whose diligent work helps make JNPT such a great journal
and resource for neurologic physical therapy!

Enjoy the issue,

A Comprehensive Approach to Evidence-Based Rehabilitation of Patients with

with PD experience a decline in quality of life and physical function over the course of the
disease. There is a growing body of evidence revealing the benefits of physical activity,
exercise, and rehabilitation in improving participation, decreasing activity limitations, and
remediating deficits in body structure and function in people with PD.

This course will begin with a review of the underlying neuropathology of PD, followed by
discussions related to differential diagnosis. An evidence-based approach to the physical
therapy examination, diagnosis, prognosis and intervention will be described. This will include,
but not be limited to coverage of how varied motor phenotypes (e.g., freezing of gait) and PD-
related cognitive dysfunction may impact rehabilitation. Responsiveness of commonly used
outcome measures will be discussed. The most current research supporting potential
neuroprotection and neuro-restorative effects of exercise interventions will be included. Specific
elements of treatment will be highlighted - including overground walking and treadmill training,
cardiovascular fitness training, strengthening, balance training, and external cueing. Finally,
community-based exercise programs supported by evidence will be discussed.
