03/2107

In the article, supporting mathematical proficiency: Strategies for New Special Education
Teachers, the authors discuss multiple strategies to become proficient in Mathematics as an
Educator. According to The National Research Council, there are five strands of mathematical
proficiency: Adaptive reasoning, strategic competence, conceptual understanding, productive
disposition, and procedural fluency. Teachers, per the article to aide struggling students is to
first, strengthen their dispositions toward approaching mathematical problems, secondly,
develop conceptual understanding of main topics, thirdly, increase their ability to be strategic in
problem solving, and lastly to improve students reasoning skills. To achieve these goals, or
strands of proficiency the student must first analyze the task, which requires, breaking down
the task into steps. When a student creates a list of the steps required, the teacher can
evaluate the list and see where a student may have gone wrong. However, the authors heed
that students can become too focused on perfecting the sub steps they lose sight of the main
concept.

An example, of a list of steps is shown below.

Another aide is the use of visuals, such as graphic organizers or diagrams ( to name
a few) can organize students thoughts in color or pictures, thus cueing skills and strategies
students are already aware of. By using visuals, word problems can become easier as well, the
authors provide this illustration.

The authors conclude by saying, Students should not be measured by being able to use the
skills listed above, visual aides and analysis steps.
