Unit Title: Cesar Chavez; A Good Citizen

Knowledge:
Students will know:
• Students will learn what Cesar Chavez a good
citizen because he was a leader, kind, helpful,
responsible, helps others. They will learn that he
helped the people who were struggling in their
community in using nonviolent strategies such as
the marches and boycotts.
•Students will learn the different characteristics
that make up a good citizen. They will learn that a
good citizen makes their community a better place,
they are kind, responsible and hard working.
STAGE 2 – ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE
Performance Tasks (Think about G. R. A. S. P. S.):
Performance Task
Students will demonstrate their good citizenship
by making an impact in their school community.
The students will combat an issue in their school
community using techniques and characteristics
that were model by Cesar Chavez such as non-
violence, boycotts and marches. The current issue
that the children have to combat has to do with
their Kindergarten yard. Issues include lack of
shade, dirty tables, old toys and their inability to
use it because of construction being done near it.
Goal -You will organize a school march with your
classmates in order to bring attention to the
problems with your Kinder yard.
Essential Questions (2-5 max):

•How do good citizens make their community a
better place?
Skills:
Students will be able to:
• Students will be able to describe and model what
it is to be a good citizen.
•Students will be able to create a poster in order to
bring awareness to an issue in their community.

Cesar Chavez (who he was, what he did and
questions they would ask him)
-Students will create a bubble map defining good
citizenship.
Role-You will take on the role of Cesar Chavez.
You will become the leader of the group, just like
Cesar Chavez was the leader of his group. You
will think about the problems with the yard and
how you think it should be solved.
Audience-Your audience is the administration of
the school.
-Students will create pictures and write a sentence
or two describing the terms union, nonviolence,
boycott, and strike.
-Students will create a poster addressing an issue
in their community.

Situation- The current issue you have to address

has to do with the Kinder yard. The issues or

Product, Performance, and Purpose- you will

talk amongst your classmates to decide what the
issues are concerning your yard. Then you will
create posters and agree on a day when you will go
on a march around the big yard in order to bring
attention to what the problems are and how you
would like them to be fixed.

for you to be successful in this task you will need
to be able to talk with your classmates and agree
on the problems you have with the Kinder yard
and set a date for the march. Then you will need to
create posters showing the administrators what the
problems are and present them at the march.

1. Introduce Essential Questions student: What makes a person a good citizen? How do good
citizens make their community a better place?
2. Introduction to being a Good Citizen by reading the Being a Good Citizen by Mary Small and

7. Students will watch a short video Hasta Sacramento 1966 on the Cesar Chavez protest march
