This class is a third grade class with twenty students. There is one student with

learning disabilities and five students who are second language learners. Six students

are gifted.

II. Subject/ Skill:

The subject of the lesson for today is geography. The students will be learning about

the different countries and be able to identify the countries on a map.

III. Objective(s):

SWABT correctly identify the counties around the world, given the information they

acquire from the postcards.

SWABT demonstrate knowledge of the countries they do research, by creating

postcards and presenting their postcards to their classmates.

IV. Procedures:

SWABT correctly identify the counties around the world, given the information they

acquire from the postcards.

SWABT demonstrate knowledge of the countries they do research by creating

postcards and presenting their postcards to their classmates.

1. Teacher will present lesson about around the world. Teacher will show the

mickey around the world video, by demonstrating a video to spark different ideas

and interest. The video will serve as an introduction to the lesson presentation

prepared. The mickey around the world video provides examples of the different

countries that he visits. The video will last 1:30 minutes. The video is fast and to
the point to help introduce the students of the project they will be working on,

which is to do research and learn about different countries.

2. The teacher is going to explain what the project will be. The teacher will show

the students how to get to the website (http://www.timeforkids.com/around-the-

world).

3. The cooperative learning strategy that will be used is the group investigations.

The teacher will assign each group a country. The students will be grouped

together in groups of four. The students will receive a map worksheet with all the

countries on it. The students will be able to mark the location of their country on

the map during their investigations. Once the students receive their country they

can begin their research of their country on either the iPad or computer. Once the

students find their information they will transfer it to a template (note taker).

4. Teacher will roam around the classroom to guide the students on the research and

answering questions they will have. The students will be able to research, once

they have finished and transferred the information on the note taker. The students

will receive their postcard template to start working on it.

5. Once all the students and groups are done with research and have completed their

postcards the teacher will handout the postcard information worksheet. Each

group will post their postcards in different locations of the room. Once every team

has a location, the students will walk to each location where a team will present

their postcard. The students will write information of each country they visited in

the postcard information worksheet.

V. Materials:
Around the World PowerPoint Presentation, Mickey around the world video, postcard

template, map, online website: time for kids, a way to get on the internet (either iPad

or computers), identify the location of your country assignment, postcard information

(assignment to demonstrate things you learned from different places), and assessment

rubric, Map worksheet (homework).

VI. Grouping Structures:

The group size when the teacher explains the assignment is the whole class. Once the

teacher splits the students into groups, the students will be in groups of four. The

teacher will number off the students (1, 2, 3, and 4). The numbers will be with one

another and that will be their assigned group. The students can decide where to group.

They can move desks together to work more efficiently.

VII. Assessment/Homework:

6. There will be two assessments for this lesson. The teacher will ask about the

location of the countries when she shows a map. The students should be able to

recall three things they learned about their countries. The final assessment of this

project will be done with a rubric. The rubric will illustrate what knowledge the

students in their groups have acquired after doing the research on their country.

The teacher will grade the students work individually and how they worded in

their group on their postcard, map, and the postcard information.

7. For homework or review, the students will need to ask their parents and any

family members about the place where they were born. The students will mark the

place on the map and a few sentences that describe the place.
