ASSIGNMENT 1

Report guideline:
1. Report should be hand writing.
2. Report should be precise and concise.
3. Submission due date: 7 MAY 2018 (Before 5.00pm)

Question 1
A uniform concrete slab of total weight W is to be attached, as shown in Figure Q1, to two
rods whose lower ends are on the same level. Calculate the ratio of the areas of the rods so
that the slab will remain level. Given ESteel = 200 GPa, EAluminium = 70 GPa.

Question 2
The rigid bar ABC shown in Figure Q2 is hinged at A and supported by a steel rod at B. Analyse the
largest load P that can be applied at C if the stress in the steel rod is limited to 207 MPa and the vertical
movement of end C must not exceed 2.54 mm. Given ESteel = 200 GPa, ASteel = 300 mm2.

Question 3
A solid shaft of 12 mm diameter as it transmit 2.5 kW at a speed of 1200 rpm. Calculate the
maximum shearing stress in shaft.

Question 4
Using the allowable shearing stress of 30 MPa, design a solid steel shaft to transmit 9 kW at a
frequency of 20 Hz.

Question 5
The wood beam has a rectangular cross section in the proportion as shown in the Figure Q5
below.

(i) Draw the shear and bending moment diagrams for the beam and loading shown.
(ii) Design the cross section of the beam, knowing that the grade timber used has an
allowable bending stress of 12 MPa.
