EEE 3 TH Problem Set # 1

Deadline: September 4, 2014

Instructions:
 The problem set should be answered individually. Answers will be submitted at the
start of our class on Sept 4. Late submissions will not be accepted.
 Begin solving each problem on a new sheet of college pad paper (or yellow paper).
Do not write answers at the back of your paper.
 Write all parts of your solutions so the checker will understand your process.
 Write your solutions legibly. The checker has the right to ignore illegible solutions.
 Write your name, student number, and section on each sheet.
 On the first page of your submission, write and sign the student’s oath of honor (that
you are to uphold while answering this problem set):

I, ___(name of student)___, swear on my honor as a student of the

University of the Philippines that I have not cheated in any form or manner
while answering this problem set.

EEE 3 TH Problem Set # 1
Deadline: September 4, 2014

Problem # 1 (continued):

A. [5pts] How many nodes, loops, and meshes are present in the circuit?
B. [5pts] Solve for the unknown voltages and currents in the circuit using KCL and KVL.
C. [5pts] Identify which elements are active and which are passive elements.
D. [5pts] Show whether or not the circuit violates conservation of power.
E. [10pts] Solve for the resistances of all passive elements.
F. [5pts] Solve for the equivalent resistance seen across nodes X and Y using the
principle of equivalence.

Problem # 2 [35pts]:

The circuit above has the following quantities: R1 = 3Ω, R2 = 2Ω, R3 = 10Ω, R4 = 8Ω,
R5 = 12Ω, R6 = 2Ω, R7 = 5Ω and RL = 5Ω, with VS = 20V.

A. [10pts] Solve for the Thevenin voltage across nodes a and b (VOC).
B. [10pts] Find the Thevenin equivalent resistance seen by RL across a and b (RTH).
C. [5pts] Draw the Thevenin equivalent network connected to RL.
D. [5pts] Solve for IL using the Thevenin network.
E. [5pts] If the circuit was left running for 5hrs, what is the total energy (in Joules)
transferred to RL?

EEE 3 TH Problem Set # 1
Deadline: September 4, 2014

Shown in the figure above is an equivalent circuit of a transistor (a general circuit

element inside the dashed lines). It has a load resistance RL = 10kΩ and is supplied by a
0.5-Volt battery in series with a 3-kΩ resistance.

A. [5pts] Using KVL at the leftmost loop, find the voltage (in terms of the battery
voltage and dependent voltage source) across the 3-kΩ resistor.
B. [5pts] Solve for Ib, using your answer in (A). Ib will be a function of Vc.
C. [5pts] Determine Vc in terms of the resistances and dependent current source. Use
the right hand side of the circuit.
D. [10pts] Solve for the actual values of Vc and Ib.
E. [5pts] Compute for Ib if a short circuit is introduced across nodes x and y.
