Samson Commercial Marine:
Our legacy continues
More than 130 year’s experience in the
cordage industry built on a legacy of firsts
1878: Samson is founded in Boston, Massachusetts
Spot Cord, the first braided rope with a reinforcing core for
added strength, establishes Samson as a leader in technology
and product performance.
1957: Samson developed the first synthetic double-braided
rope This patented construction produces ropes far stronger,
more durable, and easier to handle than the traditional
3-strand twisted ropes.
1972: Samson installed the first synthetic single-point
mooring system in the North Sea The stage is set for wire
rope replacement.
1996: Samson was the first to convert a tanker fleet
to ropes made with high modulus polyethylene (HMPE)
The high-performance fiber revolutionizes the rope industry
and it becomes clear that HMPE is a perfect replacement for
steel wire rope.
1996: Samson introduces AmSteel®-Blue made with
Dyneema® fiber AmSteel®-Blue is size for size, 1/7th the weight
of and as strong as wire rope.
Today: Samson is the wire rope replacement expert
Our line of high-performance, lightweight rope products made

operators are aware of the advantages of Dyneema® and have
become accustomed to asking for jacketed mooring lines. However,
the advantages of nonjacketed lines are numerous: they are stronger
than jacketed lines size for size and they are easy to inspect and
repair. Unlike jacketed lines, which rupture in the areas that suffer the
greatest abrasion and have to be replaced, only the chafe protection
on a nonjacketed rope has to be replaced, saving time and money.
A 12-strand mooring line system such as AmSteel®-Blue with Dynalene
chafe protection provides the ultimate in cut and abrasion resistance,
and the rope maintains its strength for the long-term.

VULCAN ETOPS / ETS
Since no testing standards or high heat performance requirements exist, Samson has developed a set of
testing parameters by which to compare Vulcan to wire. Table 1 provides a comparison between wire and
Vulcan with regard to the OCIMF minimum breaking strength requirements.
The patented synthetic ETOP Vulcan is made of Technora® fiber in conjunction with a proprietary fire-resistant
coating that meets the OCIMF required breaking strength after exposure to flames and a high-temperature
environment.
Because some strength is lost when Vulcan is exposed to high temperatures, the user may chose to use a larger diameter so that its retained
strength still meets the required break strengths even when operating under severe heat or flame conditions. Table 2 represents the rope sizes
that meet the OCIMF strength requirements. Ropes at these sizes were tested at 575°F (300°C) after being held at 20% of their break strengths for
30 minutes at the same temperature. Note that the wire sizes are larger here than in Table 1. This is due to the strength loss that is also observed
in wire when exposed to the same high-temperature testing parameters as the synthetic rope.

Efficient mooring pendants designed to reduce dynamic loads on primary mooring lines
Samson recommends the use of mooring pendants with our primary high-performance
mooring lines to provide elasticity in the mooring system. This elasticity provides safer
operations, and protection from surging and shock loading, especially in exposed
mooring berths. Pendants also provide long-term performance benefits and longer
service life.
> MINIMUM BREAK STRENGTH Per OCIMF guidelines, polyester and blended
mooring tails have a 25% higher MBS, and nylon (or polyamide) mooring tails
should have a 37% higher MBS than the primary mooring line.
Grommet (Strop) Standard grommet pendants have 2 meter (6.6 foot) and
1 meter (3.3 foot) soft eyes formed by lashings. The body of the grommet is
lashed together 3 meters (9.8 feet) from each eye lashing. Grommet strength
is 1.6x the single-leg rope strengths. Hardware, chafe protection, and additional
whipping can be added upon request.
RP-12 Nylon Pendant is a round-plaited 12-strand construction of nylon treated with our proprietary Pro-Gard
Marine Finish. This combination provides reduced wet-strength loss, improved abrasion resistance, and high energy-
absorbing properties in single-leg or grommet pendant. This line meets OCIMF guidelines and, in 22 meter (72.2 foot)
lengths, provides additional elongation for exposed terminal moorings. See product specifications on the next page.

Small Solutions to Big Problems
Starting in the 1980s when the first high-modulus lines were developed using HMPE fiber,
it became obvious that this was a perfect replacement for wire ropes in commercial marine
applications. With the problems of steel wire rope in offshore applications, now more than
ever Samson synthetic winch lines are the perfect solution.

Considerations for Large Diameter Rope Sizes 3-5/8" (88 mm) diameter and above
Considerations Impacting Strength
Connecting hardware:
> The size of connecting hardware (i.e., thimbles, shackles, links, etc.) relative to the rope can impact rope strength.
> For grommet and endless loop configurations Samson recommends a 1.6x multiplier for determining grommet strength. However,
this can be greatly impacted by hardware size, and attention should be given when calculating theoretical strength values.
For grommets used in static applications Samson recommends a MINIMUM diameter for connecting
hardware of 3x the rope’s diameter:
> This D/d ratio impacts the grommet and rope strength, and care should be taken in the design and selection of rigging hardware.
Samson recommends a minimum distance of 5 feet between the ends of each splice:
> Some applications may require shorter lengths. Careful consideration should be given to ensure that splices do not come into
contact with any bearing points under tension.
> The distance required between splices (clear rope) will impact the minimum sling fabrication length. All hardware and
connections should be figured into the overall length of the rope prior to designing the final sling configuration.
> Rope will increase in diameter in the splice area. This change is on average 1.75x the ropes diameter.

CHAFE PROTECTION & HARDWARE
SamsonRope.com H-1
Samson has the most innovative
chafe solutions to extend the life
of your synthetic ropes
Samson high-performance synthetic ropes have been engineered to provide
ease of handling, extreme strength, and long service life. Dyneema® fiber, a
major component in many of Samson’s high-performance ropes, is extremely
cut and abrasion resistant. While properly designed and engineered ropes
take maximum advantage of this resistance, in the real world environment of
the commercial marine industry, protecting ropes from abrasion and cutting
significantly increases service life.
Understanding abrasion
There are two types of abrasion: internal abrasion caused by the External abrasion without protection
relative movement of internal and external yarns, and external
abrasion caused by contact with external surfaces. An unprotected
rope moving over a rough surface, such as a poorly maintained
chock can be subjected to both. Upon inspection, it’s easy to see
that the external strands are abraded by a rough surface: often,
fibers can be left behind on the surface that caused the abrasion,
and the surface of the rope readily shows abraded yarns.
The same rough surfaces can also cause internal abrasion due to
the movement of the internal strands relative to each other. When
the rope’s surface strands pass over rough surfaces, they are
slowed relative to the strands next to them, causing friction. Heat
is created from friction—and heat is among the biggest enemies of External abrasion
synthetic ropes. with protection

thimbles
R O P E HARD W ARE
Thimbles are designed to protect the rope’s eye from cuts and kinking. Samson can supply thimbles in plastic, galvanized steel, bronze,
stainless steel or painted steel. The application will determine the appropriate thimble to be specified.
Since thimbles are not designed for load carrying purposes, they are not load rated either by their manufacturers or by Samson. Certification
of thimbles is not standard practice, and Samson does not provide ratings for thimbles used in our rope systems.
The working load limit (WLL) includes the combination of all applied loads, static and dynamic, based on normal service. The WLL does not
represent the loss of strength in the thimble or rope due to creep and other mechanical, chemical, and environmental factors.
Never use a thimble that is smaller than the size suggested for the rope diameter.
The Orkot® Thimble is a means of attaching synthetic ropes to wire ropes via a shackle. Products made from Orkot® Marine
composite materials have exceptional wear resistance and virtually no swell in water, which provides dimensional stability.
They offer tolerance to edge loading and misalignment even with the heaviest loads, and are particularly suited to freeze
fitting without the danger of shattering. Orkot® TLM Marine is the standard grade of material incorporating a woven-fabric
reinforcement and solid lubricants within a thermosetting resin matrix. The material can be used in conjunction with water
and grease lubrication, and can be run dry for limited periods.

THIMBLES
The cast-steel Heavy Duty Hawser Thimble is designed for use with wire rope or high-performance
synthetic fiber ropes such as AmSteel ®-Blue, Force-8, and DPX™-75.The galvanized thimble provides
smooth and even grooves, maximum strength in critical areas, and the proper bending radius for the
rope. When used with synthetic ropes, the thimble eye should be lashed at approximately 2, 4, 8, and
10 o’clock on the thimble circumference to secure it to the rope when not in service.

ROPE SELECTION
The use of rope for any purpose subjects it to friction, bending, and tension. All
rope hardware, sheaves, rollers, capstans, cleats, and knots are, in varying degrees,
damaging to the rope. It is important to understand that rope is a moving, working
strength member, and, even under ideal conditions, it will lose strength during use in any
application. Maximizing the safety and rope performance begins with selecting the right
rope, managing its strength loss through optimal handling practices, and retiring it from
service before it creates a dangerous situation. Ropes are serious working tools, and
when used properly they will give consistent and reliable service. The cost of replacing
a rope is extremely small when compared to the physical damage or injury to personnel
a worn out rope can cause.
ROPE SELECTION
Selecting a rope involves evaluating a combination of factors. Some of these factors are
straightforward like comparing rope specifications. Others are not easily quantified, such as a
preference for a specific color or how a rope feels in your hand. Reducing application factors that
pertain to sizes or strengths on an initial purchase creates unnecessary frequent replacements and
potentially dangerous conditions, in addition to increasing long-term costs. For ropes with equal
fiber and construction, a larger rope will outlast a smaller rope because of the greater surface-wear
distribution. Similarly, a stronger rope will outlast a weaker one because it will be used at a lower
percentage of its break strength with a reduced chance of it being overstressed.
Strength
When given a choice between ropes, select the strongest of any given size. A load of 200
pounds represents 2% of the strength of a rope with a breaking strength of 10,000 pounds.
The same load represents 4% of the strength of a rope that has a breaking strength of 5,000
pounds. The weaker rope will have to work harder and as a result will have to be retired
sooner.
Our published strengths and test results reflect as accurately as possible the conditions
under which they are to be used. Because all ropes are terminated with a splice, all
published strengths herein are spliced strengths unless otherwise noted. This is so the
customer can select the appropriate size and strength of the rope for his application, and to
ensure the utmost in safety and length of service life. This ensures that you are selecting the
best sizes and strengths for your actual application and use of the rope. When comparing
our data to that of other rope manufacturers, please be sure that spliced strengths are used.
ELONGATION
It is widely accepted that ropes with lower elongation under load will give you better load
control, which is a big help at complicated job sites. However, a rope with lower elongation
that is shock loaded can fail without warning even though it appears to be in good shape.
Low elongating ropes should be selected with the highest possible strength. Twisted rope
has lower strength and more stretch. Braided rope has higher strength and lower stretch.
SHOCK LOADING
Whenever a load is picked up, stopped, moved, or swung there is an increased force
caused by the dynamic nature of the movement. The force increases as these actions occur
more rapidly or suddenly, which is known as “shock loading.” Any sudden load that exceeds
the working load by more than 10% is considered a shock load. The farther an object falls,
the greater the impact. Synthetic fibers have a memory and retain the effects of being
overloaded or shock loaded. A rope that has undergone shock loading can fail at a later time
even though it is loaded within the working load range.
Examples of applications where shock loading occurs include rope used as a towline,
picking up a load on a slack line, or using rope to stop a falling object. In extreme cases, the
force put on the rope may be two, three, or more times the normal load involved. Shock-
loading effects are greater on a low elongation rope such as polyester than on a high-
elongation rope such as nylon, and greater on a short rope than on a long one.
For dynamic loading applications involving severe exposure conditions, or for
recommendations on special applications, consult the manufacturer.

ROPE SELECTION
WORKING LOADS
Working loads are the loads that a rope is subjected RECOMMENDED WORK
to in everyday activity. For rope in good condition with LOAD LIMIT For cataloged rope
appropriate splices, in noncritical applications, and under CONSTRUCTION WORKING LOAD
normal service conditions, working loads are based on Rope Percentage of
a percentage of the approximate breaking strength of Construction Break Strength
new and unused rope of current manufacture. For the 3-Strand 20%
products depicted in this catalog, and when used under 8-Strand 20%
normal conditions, the working load percentage is 20% 12-Strand 20%
of published strengths.
Double Braid 20%
Normal working loads do not cover dynamic conditions
such as shock loads or sustained loads, nor do they cover where life, limb, or valuable
property are involved. In these cases, a lower working load must be used. A higher working
load may be selected only with expert knowledge of conditions and professional estimates
of risk; if the rope has been inspected and found to be in good condition; and if the rope
has not been subject to dynamic loading (such as sudden drops, snubs, or pickups),
excessive use, elevated temperatures, or extended periods under load.
Rope Class
All Samson ropes are categorized for splicing and testing purposes as a
Class I or Class II construction.
Class I ropes are produced with non high-modulus fibers that impart the strength and
stretch characteristics to the rope, which have tenacities of 15 grams/denier (gpd) or less
and a total stretch at break of 6% or greater. Class I ropes are produced with traditional
fibers such as: polypropylene or polyethylene), nylon, and polyester.
Class II ropes are produced with high-modulus fibers that impart the strength and stretch
characteristics to the rope which have tenacities greater than 15 grams/denier (gpd) and
a total stretch at break of less than 6%. Typical Class II ropes are produced with: HMPE
(Dyneema®), aramid (Technora®), LCP (Vectran®), and PBO (Zylon®).
Both Class I and Class II ropes can be produced in various rope constructions
such as: 3-strand, 8-strand, 8x3-strand, 12-strand, double braids, or
core-dependent braids.

Cross winding: When the rope is placed under load it can dive, or push into, the
previously wrapped level below it. To avoid diving, cross winding is recommended.
CROSS WINDING First Cross When cross winding, start with two layers of level wound rope using the appropriate back
tension. At the end of the second layer, pull the rope quickly across the drum, allow it to
wind one full turn at the side of the drum, then quickly pull it back to the opposite side
of the drum. This will force the rope to cross in the middle, and form a barrier that will
prevent the rope from diving into the lower layers of the drum when placed under load.
Follow the cross wound layer with two layers of level wound turns, then form another
cross. Repeat this pattern until the length of rope is fully spooled onto the winch.

HANDLING / USAGE
Avoid Overheating
Heat can seriously affect the strength of synthetic ropes. When using rope where the
temperature exceeds 250°F (or if it is too hot to hold), consult the manufacturer for
recommendations as to the size and type of rope for the proposed continuous heat-
exposure conditions. When using ropes on a capstan or winch, care should be exercised
to avoid surging while the capstan or winch head is rotating. The friction from the slippage
causes localized overheating, which can melt or fuse synthetic fibers, resulting in severe
loss of tensile strength.
Storage
All rope should be stored in a clean, dry area, out of direct sunlight, and away from
extreme heat. It should be kept off the floor and on racks to provide ventilation
underneath. Never store rope on a concrete or dirt floor, and under no circumstances
should cordage and acid or alkalis be kept in the same vicinity. Some synthetic rope (in
particular polypropylene and polyethylene) may be severely weakened by prolonged
exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays unless specifically stabilized and/or pigmented to
increase UV resistance. UV degradation is indicated by discoloration and the presence of
splinters and slivers on the surface of the rope.
KNOTS
While it is true that a knot reduces rope strength, it is also true that a knot is a convenient
way to accomplish rope attachment. The strength loss is a result of the tight bends that
occur in the knot. With some knots, ropes can lose up to 50% of their strength, however,
this number can change based on rope construction and fibers used. It is vital that the
reduction in strength by the use of knots be taken into account when determining the size
and strength of a rope to be used in an application. To avoid knot strength reduction, it is
recommended that a rope be spliced according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Splice
terminations are used in all our ropes to determine new and unused tensile strengths.
Therefore, whenever possible, spliced terminations should be used to maximize the rope
strength for new and used ropes.

BENDING / SHEAVES
On a cleat when the rope does not bend radially, the barrel of the cleat can be one-half
the rope's circumference (minimum).
Surface diameter should be at Many tugboats using 8- and 9-inch-circumference headlines in ship-handling work have
least 1/2 the rope's circumference. bitts 18 inches in diameter or greater, which are adequate bending radii. However, many
of these bow and shoulder bitts are equipped with “horns” of a relatively small diameter
(5 or 6 inches), and it is these horns under or over which the lines pass and bend first in
many cases, resulting in a shortened rope life. It is recommended that the hardware be
replaced with the appropriate sized horns to avoid excessive rope replacement costs.
The ratio of the length of an eye splice to the diameter of the object over which the
eye is to be placed (bollard, bitt, cleat, etc.) should be a minimum 3:1 relationship, and
preferably 5:1. In other words, if you have a bollard two feet in diameter the eye splice

ROPE INSPECTION
VISUAL INSPECTION
The load-bearing capacity of double braid ropes such as Stable Braid is divided equally between the inner core
and the outer cover. If upon inspection, there are cut strands or significant abrasion damage the rope must be
retired because the strength of the entire rope is decreased. Severely abraded rope.
Core-dependent double braids such as AmSteel II have 100% of their load-bearing capacity handled by the
®
core alone. For these ropes, the jacket can sustain damage without compromising the strength of the load-
bearing member. Inspection of core-dependent double braids can be misleading because it is difficult to see the
core. In the case of 12-strand single braids such as AmSteel® and AmSteel®-Blue, each of the 12-strands carries
approximately 8.33%, or 1/12th, of the load. If upon inspection, there are cut strands or significant abrasion
damage to the rope, the rope must be retired or the areas of damage removed and the rope repaired with the
appropriate splice.

INSPECTION/RETIREMENT
INSPECTION PROCEDURES
To determine the extent of outer fiber
damage from abrasion, a single yarn in
all abraded areas should be examined.
The diameter of the abraded yarn
should then be compared to a portion
of the same yarn or an adjacent yarn of
the same type that has been protected
by the strand crossover area and is free
from abrasion damage. (LEFT)
Internal abrasion can be determined by pulling one strand away from the others
and looking for powdered or broken fiber filaments. (above)
