Assignment - Mapping the Semester: Part A & Part B (15%)

PREP 1300, Preparing for Academic Success (Online), Durham College

Total Marks: 15 points | Weight: 15% |
Part A & Part B Due: Sun., Feb. 11 at 11:59 pm [assignment folder]
Assignment Rationale:

Goal-setting and time-management are inextricably related, and one without the other will only rarely
lead to optimal outcomes. This assignment is designed to assist you in analyzing and reflecting upon
what you hope to achieve in your academic career and how effective you currently are in working
towards those goals. By asking you to create an organized record of deadlines and other
responsibilities using the “Semester-at-a-Glance” template, this assignment allows you to take a big
picture view of this semester and to break the big picture down into smaller, more specific areas—that
is, by identifying shorter goals and managing priorities.

PREP 1300 Course Learning Outcomes Evaluated in this Assignment:

• CLO 1: Develop a plan to achieve personal and academic goals using appropriate goal-
oriented, time- and self-management strategies and techniques.

• CLO 3: Apply best practices in the areas of self-reflection, reading comprehension, note taking,
test-writing, informational literacy and critical thinking, among others, to ensure success in
post-secondary courses and subjects.

Instructions:

Part A (3 marks): Semester-at-a-Glance Calendar

1. Review your GAS-O course outlines/syllabus for each of your courses this semester and find most
(if not all) of the deadlines and other important dates associated with each course. You may also
include your extracurricular activities, work schedule, appointments etc. as part of this
assignment.

Note: ALL Preparing for Academic Success due dates MUST be included in your calendar. Please
consult the PAS Online - Important Information & Course Schedule (Fall 2016) for more
information!

2. Record each of these deadlines either on the “Semester-at-a-Glance” calendar worksheet
provided (you can also modify this template) or using another time management tool (e.g., DC
student agenda, smartphone calendar, laptop calendar, Google calendar, etc.).

3. Once completed, please provide a copy (.docx or .pdf), URL, or clear screen shot(s) of your ENTIRE
14-WEEK SEMESTER.

Note: Please make sure your calendar (i.e. screen shots) is clear and easy to read otherwise you
will not receive a favourable mark.

4. Please consult the Part A - Rubric (Grading Criteria) before submission.

Part B (12 marks): Priorities & Goal Setting Worksheet

5. Using your completed “Semester-at-a-Glance” calendar worksheet or other time management
tool as a reference, answer the questions on the worksheet called: “Priorities and Goal-Setting.”
Please make sure that you have answered each question thoroughly using complete sentences.
That is, each answer is well-detailed and well thought out, using paragraph format. No point-
form notes!

6. Please consult the Part B - Rubric (Grading Criteria) before submission.

Note: When submitting your completed assignment, you can combine Part A and Part B in one
document OR submit Part A and Part B as separate documents to the dropbox.
