PROCEDURE
Introduction ( 10 min.):
Learning Strategy: Give one get one
Remind students that we have learned about the Metis and the treaties, and how they responded to the Canadian
government to them. Have students number 1 to 4 in their social books. Students will have 2 minutes to write two
things they remember about the metis and the treaties. After this, let students know that they will have to go around the
classroom to find 2-3 other students and write down 2 other ideas they got from students. Once you are done please sit
in your seat. Amalgamate some of the responses to piece together what we have learned about the metis in the 1800s.

Remind students that we were working in groups on different areas of the North West Rebellion. We wil have 10 to 15
minutes to finish working on what we were working on, then will make our timeline.

Body ( 40 min.):
Learning Activity #1: Poster Jigsaw
Each tablegroup will work on a part of the North West Rebellion.
1 - Treaty (Page 241 top paragraph - Bellas group)
2 - Treaty Response (Students write a letter to the Canadian government)
3 - Government response to the metis (skit or a response letter)
4. Start of the NW Rebellion
5. Ending of the NW Rebellion
6. Hanging
Students will have 15 minutes to create a poster and prepare a speech to give to the class about their subject area. Ideas
for what you could do: Pictures, skits, word definitions, research
Students will be making a timeline of the North West Rebellion. Have each group say in one sentence what their spot
in the timeline is. Then have their group present.

LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE A ED 3501 2012
Learning Strategy: 5 Ws
Once finished, Students will make a Who, What, When, Where, and Why of the timeline with their table groups. We
will then make a final chart on the board.

If the lesson ends early, let students know that we will be talking about schools in the 1800s next lesson. Have students
brainstorm how they think their classrooms were different in 1800s. Look around our class and think about what we
have learned so far.
