Given: Relative Saturation of Hexane in outlet of Dryer: 50% or 0.50

Total Pressure (outlet of Dryer) : 1 atm or 760 mmHg
Outlet saturation of Hexane (Condenser) = 5.0 mol%
moles of hexane in Condensate = 1.5 kmol

a) Concentration of Hexane leaving Condenser = 5.0mol%

Total Pressure of Hexane at outlet of Condenser: [(5.0)/100](*760mmHg) = 38mmHg
Now using Antoine Equation, From Appendix B, Table B4,
log1038 = 6.88555 - [(1175.817)/(T + 224.867)] , T = Condenser outlet Temperature
Solving we get, T = 269.9K or -3.27oC

Using Henry’s Law, (yhex)*(total pressure) = (xhex)*(Henry’s law constant)

where yhex = mol fraction in vapour phase
xhex = mol fraction of Hexane or relative saturation of Hexane
Henry’s Law constant for Hexane = 1068 mmHg
Therefore, yhex = [(0.50)*(1068)]/(760) = 0.703
yN2 = (1 - 0.703) = 0.297

Now applying mole balance,

For Hexane, Let no be initial moles entering dryer,
n1 be moles leaving with gas from Condenser
n2 be moles leaving with Condensate = 1.5 kmol
therefore, no = n1 + 1.5 … (eqn 1)
Similarly For Nitrogen,
Inlet = (0.297)*(no)
Outlet = (0.95)*(n1)
therefore, (0.297)*no = (0.95)*n1 … (eqn 2)
Solving Equation 1 &2 , we get
no = 2.18 kmol/min & n1 = 0.682 kmol/min
volume of Nitrogen required is (number of moles)*(volume at STP/kmol)
given by (0.95)(0.682)(22.4 m3) = 14.513 m3

b) Given gas leaving the dryer is compressed P = 10 atm but saturation is same

Since saturation is same therefore, yhex = 0.703

but saturation pressure changes = [(0.703)*(760*10 mmHg)]/(0.50) = 10685.6
using Antoine Equation,
log1010685.6 = 6.88555 - [(1175.817)/(T + 224.867)] , T = Condenser inlet Temperature
T = 460K or 187oC

For Condenser outlet, the gas is cooled at constant pressure, i.e., P= 10 atm
Hexane pressure = (0.05)*(7600mmHg) = 380 mmHg
Using Antoine Equation
log10380 = 6.88555 - [(1175.817)/(T + 224.867)] , T = Condenser outlet
Temperature
T = 321.35K or 48.2oC

Volume Ratio
P*V=n*R*T using ideal gas law
V = (n*R*T)/P
V1/V2 = (n1*T1)/(n2*T2) = [(0.682)*(321.35)]/[(2.18)*(460)] = 0.22

c) To determine the cost effectiveness of both processes we need to know the cost

of cooling the gas to -3.27oC for process (a) as compared to compressing the gas

to 10 atm and then cooling it at constant pressure of 10 atm for process (b).
