The 60s Culture…and Beyond

4.) The 1960s is the golden age of pop culture, rock and roll music continued
to be popular in America during the nineteen sixties. The most popular group,
however, was not American. It was British, the Beatles, four rock and roll
musicians from Liverpool. The Beatles' song "I Want to Hold Your Hand" went on
sale in the United States at the end of nineteen sixty-three. Within five weeks, it
was the biggest-selling record in the country. In the nineteen sixties, "do your
own thing" became a common expression. It meant to do whatever you wanted,
without feeling guilty.
But 1966 was a year of turmoil. It began in pop and ended in rock, began
in civil rights and ended in black power, began in the great society and ended in
the Republican resurgence. Inspired by the success of the civil rights movement
and boosted by the money pouring into the music and youth industries, young
people in the US and the UK began to think of another way of life, that didn’t
involve being like your parents. They were beginning to envision what the future
might be.
The nineteen sixties began with the election of the first president born in
the twentieth century, John Kennedy. For many Americans, the young president
represented a spirit of hope for the nation. When Kennedy was murdered in
nineteen sixty-three, many felt that their hopes died, too. This was especially
true of young people, and members and supporters of minority groups.
A time of innocence and hope soon began to look like a time of anger and
violence. More Americans protested to demand an end to the unfair treatment of
black citizens. Many more protested to demand an end to the war in Vietnam.
And many protested to demand full equality for women. By the middle of the
nineteen sixties, it had become almost impossible for President Lyndon Johnson
to leave the White House without facing protesters against the war in Vietnam.
The 1960s was a period of time in which the youth culture exploded. It
was the era of sex, drugs and pop revolution, but also of anti-war protest and
inner-city riots. And the more the young pushed forward, the more the adults
pushed back. Music played a major role in these cultural changes. It has
influenced the western society to this day because of how much changes were
occurring at one period of time.

5.) In my opinion, internet is the most impactful technological advancement

to date, not just in my lifetime. It has such wide range of use that not only it
affects human’s social life, but all aspects revolving around this planet. It is
almost like everything revolves around the Internet. Some may consider that
statement to be way too much, not for me.
We have come a long way in worldwide technological advancement.
Computers are a way of living now but years ago everything was documented on
paper and before then on stone. Indeed, the Internet hosts an enormous
informational base. Technology has made it possible for this information to
reach far and wide. It would be almost unheard for the average American to go
one day without the Internet. By the year of 2000, more than one-half of all
American households had personal computers. Today, the number must have
tripled. There is no doubt that the Internet serves as an important database
worldwide.
On one hand, the Internet is not only a source of entertainment, but it is
also a major source of news, information and goods for sale. Individuals can
customize, or personalize, the news they receive about current events, new
products, sales and special offers. Individuals can set up their own news sites
and web blogs. Musicians can record their CDs and sell them on the web. Indeed,
it is now possible to find just about anything or anyone on the Internet. Today,
more than 10,000 application programs are available on computers. Such
programs include word processing, spreadsheet, and communication programs;
lets not forget these are just 3 programs out of 10,000.
Computers are basically used in all areas of our day to day life. Computers
are used and will continue to be used in education, medicine, travel, and
business. Students and teachers alike depend on computers. Students can
conduct research, check his or her grade, and in math computing over a million
calculations per second. In addition, teachers can update their lessons and
record student grades.
6.) By the middle of the nineteen sixties, it had become almost impossible for
President Lyndon Johnson to leave the White House without facing protesters
against the war in Vietnam. The United States' involvement in the war sparked
turmoil within the nation and people created groups that protested the war.
Some of these groups even changed their cultural ways from ordinary society.
War's Impact on Society Some veterans of the war created this group in
1967 to protest the war after so many soldiers were diagnosed with post-
traumatic stress disorder. Vietnam Veterans Against the War Issue with
Narcotics Many veterans received negative stereotypes from the war such as
bitter, homeless, drug-addicted, psychologically devastated.
The Vietnam War changed the way people viewed the government, media,
and Constitutional Rights. How Americans viewed the Government After hearing
of the U.S. using chemical weapons, the American people began to protest the
war and challenge the government's use of power. Many groups of people also
began not to trust our government. Government The people used the media to
spread word of protests and other social gatherings. With the media, groups
were able to show the country what they stood for and hopefully gain more
productivity and protestors. The more media that showed up, the better the
outcome of the protest.
It was very easy and cheap for soldiers to get narcotics, especially heroin
while in Vietnam. This created a big issue when the soldiers returned, increasing
the demand for it in America as well as introducing the new drug. Many Rights of
the people were being challenged during this time. As protestors gathered to
challenge their government, often times the government would have to go to
extreme measures to stop the protests. Frequently, police would interrupt
protests and the people would react negatively and cause a riot.
The art form which best serves as the protest to the war in Vietnam was
Music. Bob Dylan is a musician who produced many songs of social protest. He
wrote anti-war songs before the war in Vietnam became a violent issue in the
United States.
