Nicholas Wysocki 1
Funds of Knowledge Group Discussions:
(Resources by Michael Genzuk and Dr. Nicholas Wysocki)

Students will be placed into Groups 1-6 (Please write your group number on your
Course Syllabus!!)

Each group must start by reading pages 1-5 of the Michael Genzuk reading and Dr.
Nicholas Wysocki’s Ethnography Guidance Sheet (both are in the Clinical
Experiences Module of D2L). Groups will be assigned a specific discussion as listed
below:

Group 1 Discussion: Culture and the Ethnicity/Race Research Report

Focus of Analysis:
1) How can you help the class groups to both THINK about the definition of
“Culture” and EXPERIENCE the feeling of “Cultural Incongruence”? (See
both definitions in the Culture and Competence PPT that was placed into the
Introductory Materials Subfolder)
2) How can you help the class groups talk about some of their resources on
Uncounscious or Implicit Bias? (These resources are listed on each of
their individual Funds of Knowledge Self-Investigations)?
3) What are the ethnographic research methods that Dr. Nicholas Wysocki
lists on his Digital Ethnography Project Blog located at:
https://wsudigitalethnographyprojectblog.wordpress.com/
4) How can you help the class groups use the academic journal articles they
chose for their Ethnicity and Race Research Report to identify concrete
examples of how their respective authors used any of the aforementioned
ethnographic research methods to identify the Cultural Characteristics
of importance to learners (See the Graphic – Social Constructs of Difference
document – Page 2 and said journal article)?

Group 2 Discussion: The Ethnicity/Race Research Report (cont.) and Ethnographic

Analysis
Focus of Analysis:
1) How can you help the class groups examine their respective academic journal
articles to find concrete examples of the how the authors CARED
ABOUT/CONNECTED WITH/TALKED WITH members of the ethnic or
racial group examined to identify the Important Societal Factors that
impact them?” (Ask them to see their graded Ethnicity and Race Research
Report – Section II)? (Note: Share examples from your own articles and
then guide them in the discussion of their own articles)
2) How can you facilitate a discussion of the specific educational
interventions or strategies discussed by the authors of your own and your
classmates’ respective academic journal articles?
3) How can you help the class discuss specific points on pages 1-2 of Dr.
Wysocki’s Ethnography Guidance Sheet? (This document is downloaded
into your Funds of Knowledge Subfolder).
4) Dr. Wysocki will close your group’s discussion with an examination of the
Ethnographic Analysis Strategy that you will all use in the clinical portion of
EDFD 461. You can find a visual of this analysis strategy at
https://wsudigitalethnographyprojectblog.wordpress.com/

Wysocki’s Ethnography Guidance Sheet? (This document is downloaded
into your Funds of Knowledge Subfolder).
2) Search the web for discussions of the research conducted by Luis Moll on the
concept of Funds of Knowledge. What can you TELL OR SHOW the class
about Luis Moll’s research?
3) What specific, concrete examples of Funds of Knowledge can you
provide from YOUR OWN LIVES and how did YOU acquire them? (Note:
Make reference to categories and examples in your respective Funds of
Knowledge Self-Investigations)
4) Dr. Wysocki will close your discussion by discussing the requirements of
Sections 1 and 2 of the Poverty Analysis Discussion assignment?

Group 4 Discussion: Suggestions by Michael Genzuk and Taking Field Notes

Focus of Analysis:
1) How can you help the class examine, and make sense of, the specific
SUGGESTIONS MADE BY MICHAEL GENZUK about taking field notes and
interviewing? (See the Genzuk reading in your Funds of Knowledge
Subfolder).
2) What connections can you help the class make between Genzuk’s suggestions
for taking field notes and interviewing and my discussion of both: a) “What
Am I Supposed to Actually Do in My Clinical Placement”; and b) “Three Levels
of Ethnographic Analysis” located at:
https://wsudigitalethnographyprojectblog.wordpress.com/
3) Dr. Wysocki will help all the groups understand the required Field Note
Template for the Digital Ethnography Project based upon your discussion.
4) He will then close the group’s discussion by walking through the
requirements of Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Poverty Analysis Discussion
assignment?

Group 5 Discussion: Digital Ethnography Project Requirements

1) What creative way(s) can you help the class understand the areas of the

attention to detail; and d) Asking respectful questions and actively listening
for answers. What connections can you help the class groups make between
THESE actions and any of the 11 strategies on my Activities to Investigate

https://wsudigitalethnographyprojectblog.wordpress.com/

Group 6 Sections: Prompt Question Sets and Journal Tables

Focus of Analysis:
1) How can you help the class examine the Prompt Question Sets located at:
https://wsudigitalethnographyprojectblog.wordpress.com/digital-
ethnography-prompt-questions-for-journal-tables/
2) How can you help the class see Prompt Question Set #1 and the example
of a completed Journal Table #1 at:
https://wsudigitalethnographyprojectblog.wordpress.com/journal-tables-
for-the-digital-ethnography/
3) How can you creatively help the class understand my “Guide for Citing
EDFD 401 and EDFD 461 Course Content in Journal Tables”?
4) Dr. Wysocki will close your discussion with an examination of the Gender
Discussion PPT, Gender Research Report, and the connection of these
items to Prompt Question Set #3/Journal Table #3.

Requirements of the discussion:

1) Your group is required to discuss your assigned Focus of Analysis Questions

THOROUGHLY through some discussion plan!!

(Note: I will remind the class groups to examine your group’s set of
questions before you begin so that you don’t have to waste time reading
each question to us.)

2) Your group can work on the assigned focus questions in smaller “teams” of 2-3
people as long as everyone is involved in the final discussion plan (Note: Each
“team” needs to be aware of what the other “teams” are planning within your
group).

3) Your discussion plan needs to include any combination of fun, creative,

interactive options that would appeal to your learning preferences/styles and
those of your classmates. For example:
a) Hold dyad conversations
b) Perform a skit – think long and hard about this one so that it is not silly!!!
c) Bring props or objects that signify concepts or techniques
d) Share any personal, relevant stories
e) Locate or develop a relevant YouTube or Teacher Tube Video
f) Create a podcast
g) Develop colorful physical or digital posters (e.g., concept maps, lists of terms,
signifying pictures etc.)
h) Shape problem-solving scenarios for discussion
i) Videotape a virtual tour of a school building or community space
Dr. Nicholas Wysocki 4

j) Engage the class in a collective Q and A based on either past common

experiences (e.g., a class that you know your classmates have taken) or the areas
of the readings that they were responsible for discussing: You can see these
areas in the above section.
k) Create your own version of a Ted Talk related to your questions
L) Any other ideas? (The possibilities are truly endless!!)

NOTE: PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM SIMPLY READING PASSIVELY FROM

PRESENTATION TOOLS LIKE POWERPOINT OR PREZI IN YOUR DISCUSSIONS
AND INSTEAD ENGAGE THE CLASS IN A VARIETY OF MOVEMENT,
INTERACTIONS, SHARING OF CONVERSATIONS, SHARING OF RESEARCH,
CREATING OF ILLUSTRATIONS, ETC.

4) I will need an outline of your discussion plan, your group number, and the first
and last names of your group members on that outline.
