Lesson Plan Template

Name: Devon Huston Date: 4/2/18

Curriculum/Course: English 12 Grade level: 12th grade

Materials: Pencil, worksheet, internet source, timer,
Time/Period: 1 Hour
books, & headphones.
Standards: RL. 11-12.9 Demonstrate knowledge of eighteenth-, nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century
foundational works of American literature, including how two or more texts from the same period treat similar
themes or topics.
RL. 11-12.2 Determine two or more themes or central ideas of a text and analyze their development over the
course of the text, including how they interact and build on one another to produce a complex account; provide
an objective summary of the text.

Objectives (I can statements): Students will use the internet to find as many answers of the John Steinbeck
scavenger hunt as possible.

Assessment (Formative, Summative): They will turn in the assignment at the end of the hour whether it is
complete or not.

Outcomes: Students will understand some background information on John Steinbeck before we begin to read his
novel “Of Mice and Men.”
Students will also understand John Steinbeck’s purpose of writing “Of Mice and Men.”

Introduction/Hook: (Warm-up, review of previous day’s lesson, check for understanding of previous knowledge)
Make sure that students can identify why we are reading John Steinbeck. Also ask them what they may already
know about this author and his stories.

Steps in the lesson: (Include ideas for whole-class instructions, if any; differentiated activities; sharing, etc.)
Pass out the work sheet and make sure that each student has access to the internet. Let them loose to find the
answers to the questions wherever they can find them on the internet. Students will work independently. This will
give the students some background knowledge before we begin reading “Of Mice and Men” tomorrow.

Closure Activity/Wrap up: This may be in the form of independent practice, a chance to share, or explicit restatement of the goals of
the lesson.
Allow the students to share a few of their findings with the class for the last 5-10 minutes.

Assessment (Formative, Summative): thumbs up/down, exit ticket, quiz, chapter test, etc.
They will turn in the assignment at the end of the hour whether it is complete or not.

School Improvement Strategies:

Limiting goals and/or initiatives to focus on student learning. Also establishing routines.

Differentiation:

What will I differentiate? Some students will have to answer fewer questions than others, some will have less
complex questions, and some will only be asked to think on concrete levels.

How will I differentiate? I will differentiate for readiness. (Simple vs. Complex, Concrete vs. Abstract, and Few vs.
Many Directions).
Specific Student / Group: Simple vs. Complex: for students who aren’t able to handle complex questions I plan to
cross off the one’s that I believe that they will have trouble answering. I will cross off numbers 10,13, 16, & 17.
Accommodation/Modification:

Specific Student /Group: There will be headphones for students who prefer listening to the information that they
find. The computers will also be adjusted with bigger text for students who cannot see as well. A timer will be
provided to help with time management. There will also be books on Shakespeare for students who would rather
search for the information in books rather than online.
