Unit Summary:
In Lesson 1, students are provided with introduction and explanations of the new vocabulary in this unit to help them better understand
the festivals they are learning. Some flash cards or posters are used to help the students visualize the different festivals. Then students will
use the iPads to engage in a Quizlet activity to practice matching the new Chinese vocabulary with the corresponding pictures. The
teacher walks around to monitor students’ activities and provide assistance as needed. Afterwards, the teacher will give a lecture
regarding of the culture of the Chinese Spring Festival. Students will finish the guided notes according to the content of the teacher
lecture.
In Lesson 2, at first, students brainstorm on the question “What do you know about Spring Festival”. And then students will engage in a
ranking activity regarding of the important customs of Spring Festival. Next, students are assigned into small groups to have group
discussions about the significance of the Spring Festival customs. Afterward, students work in the same small groups to engage in a
webquest activity regarding of the culture of the Spring Festival. Students use the internet to go to the websites assigned in the worksheet,
discuss with group peers in Chinese, and then answer the questions along with the websites.
In Lesson 3, students work collaboratively in the same small groups to explore the provided resources, access the knowledge they have
learned so far in this unit, exchange ideas in Mandarin, and then use Prezi/PowerPoint to make a venn diagram to compare and contrast
Spring Festival and Christmas. Afterward, students work collaboratively on a group oral presentation to demonstrate the similarities and
differences between the activities of Spring Festival and the Christmas.
