Teens honoured with prestigious award

Nine of Dundee’s most inspirational young people will be honoured with the Diana Award by Lord

Provost, John R Letford, at the Dundee City Chambers on 22 September. These teenagers join
1,500 young Scots who have already been recognised by the Diana Award for making an outstanding
contribution to their communities.

The award, in memory of Princess Diana, is presented to young people – from all circumstances and
sections of society - who are determined to take action and make a positive change to their
communities and the lives of others.

14 year old Dale from Braeview Academy, Dundee will receive an award for showing outstanding
commitment to his school and community. Dale promotes a positive image of young people and
volunteers six days a week at local projects and even hosts his own radio show. Dale said: “I am
really excited that I have been selected to receive a Diana Award. I really enjoy volunteering in my
hometown and I hope that other young people will be inspired to get more involved in their
community.” Dale has already been presented with the Diana Certificate of Excellence group award,
for his volunteer work with Xplore Peer Mentoring.

Lord Provost said: "I am honoured that I have been asked to present the Diana Award to these
outstanding individuals. It is wonderful to acknowledge the compassionate work of young Scots who
are determined to make a positive contribution to their communities. I hope this Award encourages
more young people to get involved with local projects.”

Maggie Turner OBE and Chief Executive of the Diana Award, said: “We are delighted to hold a Diana
Award ceremony to highlight the amazing work that young people in Scotland are doing. Our Award
Holders span the country and it is wonderful to honour our Scottish Award Holders in Dundee. They
represent a growing community who act as force for good and help build a positive society in which
we would all like to live.”

The Diana Award supports young people through its unique alumni programme which harnesses the
compassion and commitment of these young people so they fulfil their aspirations for society.

Some young people receiving the Diana Award include:

16 year old Dean from Craigie High School, took the initiative to support staff and pupils in the
mornings before school and at lunch times. He sets an extremely positive example to those around
him especially the junior pupils, who look up to him.

14 year old Dale from Braeview Academy, over several years Dale has defied expectation and
shown an outstanding commitment to his school and community. Dale gives up six evenings a week
to volunteer at local projects, including Xplore Mentoring, Barnardos and The Shore. A prominent
figure in school he hosts his own radio show and is a leadership ambassador. Dale was recently
awarded the Evening Telegraph’s Young Volunteer of the Year and the Diana Certificate of
Excellence in recognition of his work. Dale is vibrant, friendly, kind and a positive role model to his
peers.

Xplore Peer Mentors, 14-18, from Xplore Simply Peer Mentoring, volunteering over a staggering
1000 hours between them, these young mentors forgo a lot of their own social lives to help support
other young people sometimes late at night and at weekends. The peer mentors integrate vulnerable
young people into local activities, support them with independent travel, work on their confidence and
self esteem and on other barriers which may stop a young person from being able to make informed
choices and getting on in life. Their commitment and dedication is an outstanding advertisement for
what young people in Dundee can and will do for others and thanks to their unselfish acts and their
hard work, the young people they work with in Dundee can look forward to a better brighter future
through the support the mentors offer.
