The journal gives an in-depth look at the statistics of homelessness. They go into detail of
what homelessness is and how one defines homelessness changes the amount of people who fall
in this category changes. The journal goes talks mainly about the causes of homelessness and
some of the main causes of this. Things like the fact that men make up 75% of the total homeless
population in America. The article concludes that homeless men are more likely to have drug and
alcohol problems. They are also more likely to develop a mental illness. The source seems to be
reliable as it is an academic journal. The source may be a tad bit biased against homeless men,
but all together it seems like the source can be trusted. The goal of this source is to inform about
homelessness and to shed light about some of the issues that come from being homeless.
This article can be used to give ideas on different programs that we should think about
implementing. It can also give us an idea of what we may be dealing with on a regular basis.
Though we are more than likely not going to be only catering to those who are homeless. This
research does not really help us with swaying investors to give us money. I believe that we can
take certain parts of this article and change them to help us. Like the fact that we can pick our
definition of homelessness. This will give us a larger number of people that our organization can
help. This really hasn’t changed our idea for our plan, it has just made us more cautious. We now
know what the average person we will be helping will be like, so it should be easier to help them.

This journal talks about a couple of different non-profits that have opened in Michigan,
Los Angeles, and Austin. It talks about the costs for the shelter when it first opened and what the
shelter does for the community. This is a very useful source, while Albuquerque is not Michigan
it still gives us an idea of how much money we are going to need for start-up costs. It also talks
about the grants that this type of facility is given. While that is not super useful it does show us
that it could be easy to get money for our non-profit. The source talks about how housing
homeless has been considered a part of health care, and it can get grants as such. While housing
is not something that our non-profit is going to do at the beginning it could be something that we
This research really hasn't helped a ton. Though it does give us some ideas that we had
not previously thought about. We could change our idea a tiny bit to have some housing for
homeless people. It would open up a bunch of new grants that we could apply for. Also,
incorporating housing into our plan for our non-profit we could possibly team up with a medical
group, like the shelters in the article, and we could get more money and be subsidized for
income being $44,270. This article states the only way to break the poverty cycle is to intervene
at the childhood levels. New Mexico has the second highest percent of children living in poverty
at 30%, and minority children are particularly at risk. Improving education opportunities for the
young is crucial to helping break the poverty cycle and many nonprofits and different
organizations are already trying to improve the lives of those in need in the state.
This source is very useful in giving some statistics and numbers to show how sever the
poverty in New Mexico is and seems very reliable. The article is a little bias in being very
optimistic with the fact that New Mexico can decrease its poverty percentage and improve the
living conditions of those who live there. This article is trying to back up its opinion of
intervening at childhood to break the poverty cycle. This article will fit into our argument
somewhat because it discusses how serious of an issue poverty is in New Mexico and how there
are a lot of nonprofits trying to change that. The article does focus on children though, and we

Poverty is an injustice that has compounded 40 million times over. America is all about
giving everyone the same fundamental right to opportunity and liberties. This isn't the case when
it comes to individuals suffering in poverty though. In the modern era of America, opportunity
has ever been so far out of reach for so many. The United States has neglected these vulnerable
citizens and have even blamed them for being in their situation. Poverty is an injustice, and our
This article is very bias and brings a strong opinion on poverty in the Unites States, but
does give some facts that make it seem reliable and like the author had some knowledge in the
subject. The goal of this source is to provoke feelings of change and to inspire people to address
this growing issue and to do something about it. This article does fit into our argument because
our company is trying to address this problem and help the people who are suffering because of
it. We can use some of the language in this article to provoke feelings of pathos and the want to
The article was published in 2009 so the data in it is slightly outdated as it talks about the
unemployment crisis and the housing crash. The main point of this article is to talk about how
smaller cities, Albuquerque in particular, have a hard time when the unemployment rate reaches
something like 8.8, which it did in this article. When people are unemployed it makes it
significantly harder to pay off bills like rent or a house payment. This leads to rampant forecloses
and evictions, which means that the homeless population of a city increases during this period of
homelessness. This article does not seem to be biased, it sticks mainly to the facts and rarely
This article could be very helpful for an argument to fund our non-profit. We could use it
to show that the best way to help homelessness is to stop it before it happens. This can be done
by helping unemployed people find jobs before they become homeless. Also, we are helping
more than just the homeless in that case. By doing this we are broadening our consumer base. As
we are not just limiting it to the homeless, more people can come to us and we can help them.

In Los Angeles some new ways to help with the poorest communities have been created.
An exhibit was created that shows some devices that were made, such as the Hippo Water Roller
is a rolling drum like carrier and can carry 90 liters of water but can still be pushed by a young
child. The Peepoo was also created which is a biodegradable bag toilet that addresses lack of
sanitation in certain communities. At the end of the exhibit, and ActionLab is placed which is a
website that can help you get involved with other activities like this right way. This exhibit is
used to help spread a message to the people of Los Angeles and to make them aware of the
I think this article is a little bias in the fact that they are really trying to sell the benefits of
this exhibit, but I do personally think that it is a good idea. The source is from a newspaper
covering the event so it is reliable in the description of how the event went. It wasn’t bias at all,
because it just gave the facts about what was included in the exhibit and what was not. It helps
educate people of the problems going on around them and also spurs them to get involved and
signed up to work with different nonprofit organizations to help with different causes. I think this
article was useful, but my group doesn’t just want to make people aware, we also want to
directly help these people get jobs. The exhibit is a good idea to help raise money for our
company though.
This is an article from the State of New Mexico and is about how to register for
unemployment payments. The process to sign up for unemployment seems to be long and a huge
hassle. This is a good way to help the unemployed stay positive and in good moral while looking
for a job. The site also says that they must have a minimum of two work searches every week to
continue getting benefits. This could be good for us as we could potentially partner with the state
to help with these job searches. We could help the people on unemployment find a job faster and
help them get the job. This would be good for the State of New Mexico as it would possibly
This is a good argument article for us. We could bring it up to the State of New Mexico
when we get more established and perhaps partner with them. They would pay us to help these
people on unemployment find jobs quicker so that the state would not have to pay so much in
unemployment every year. This would be good for the state as well as for us, as the state would
have more money to do other things, like road work or other social programs, and we would get
a steady income.

income-for-unemployed.
This article talks about a couple of different European countries and how they have
decided to pay basic income to those who are unemployed. The way they are doing it is
fundamentally different from the way that America is doing unemployment. Instead of having
different conditions that need the applicant needs to meet every week to continue to receive
unemployment, the government of these countries are paying a base living wage to either the
unemployed or in some cases the poorest families in the region. Some of the countries do have
small restrictions like they will get extra money a month if they do volunteer work, or that they
need to look for a job. This could work though it would have to be changed slightly. In
Albuquerque, we could potentially take the approach that people could get more money in
This is an article that shows what works in other countries. The idea behind it is that as
long as a person has this basic wage they will not be demoralized, and they will continue to look
for work themselves, or they will open up their own businesses. I don't really see this working
for Albuquerque, at least not in the way that it is being implemented in these countries. If we
were then some people would just decide to live off this basic income for the rest of their lives.
The volunteer idea is also a good one however I do not believe that it will work. This article
shows an idea of what could happen if American culture was not like it is. It really does not help
or hurt our company's ideas or goal. Though all in all it is an interesting idea that can work if the

In 2015, governor Richard Berry introduced a solution to help solve the pan handling and
homelessness problem in Albuquerque. The program is called "There's a Better Way", and it
offers them to become city workers. The workers clean, prune, pull weeds, and similar routine
tasks around Albuquerque and get paid. Since the program started it has had 570 participants, 24
of them have found permanent employment and 8 of them have moved into permanent housing.
Mayor Berry also had the 311 signs installed all around Albuquerque to give the homeless
population someone to call to help them find shelter or food. Since the signs went up more than
This information does seem very reliable sine it came from a journal article. There does
seem to be some bias though since the author traveled with the Mayor and got to experience
some of the projects first hand, but that also gives the author a better insight to how well these
programs worked. I think this article will be very helpful with our argument because it shows
how the implementation of certain programs really do have an effect on those in poverty in
Albuquerque and hopefully our plan would work to like the ones implemented in 2015.

people in southeast Texas. These organizations get most of their money to help certain
communities from the Entergy Charitable Foundation which donates hundreds of thousands of
dollars to different nonprofit organizations. This grant allows for organizations to improve
schools for better education, which helps with the poverty levels in this area.
This source isn't bias because it mostly gives facts about how many organizations get this
grant and what the participants needs to have to apply for it. Most of the article states the
specifics on how much money is given to where the money has been given out to before. The
goal of this source is to show that here are many grant programs that can give a nonprofit money
to help benefit their specific cause. This does help with our case because it shows that there are
many different organizations that give grants and have opportunities for a nonprofit to be
successful.

Strengthening Nonprofits, Dare Mighty Things,
strengtheningnonprofits.org/resources/guidebooks/Understanding_Fee-for-
service_Models.pdf.
There are different ways that a non-profit can charge their clients. The first is to have
clients pay a mandatory fee. This is not something that our non-profit should do as we are
targeting ourselves towards the homeless. The other option we have is to have a system of
voluntary donation and requested fees. This would probably be the best way for our company to
charge anything to the clients. After we get someone a job we can ask for a small donation to
keep the company running so that we can help someone else the same way we helped them. We
could also start some kind of sponsorship program, where people, who we have helped or just
people from the community, can give us monthly donations of a certain amount and maybe our
This article really changed the way I looked at this project. I originally though that since
we were a non-profit that we could not charge our clients anything. I knew, and it had come up
in discussions, that we could ask people for donations after the fact, but as long as we are under a
certain limit, set by the IRS, we can charge an upfront cost to our clients. It was surprising to
learn this, but it doesn’t really change the original plan we had going into this. We will not
charge our clients any upfront costs. After we have gotten them a job, we will ask for donations,
but since we are going to be dealing with the homeless mainly, it would just be bad business to
2) Fritz, Joanne. “Can You Pay Your Nonprofit Staff? How Much Can You Pay?” The Balance,
There are going to be quite a few overhead costs for our non-profit. These costs will
include wages for our employees, office supplies, company cars, advertising, insurance, taxes,
telephone bills, internet bills, repairs, utilities, and (if we don't decide to have an accountant or
lawyer on staff) fees for external legal and accounting fees. This will cost our non-profit a ton of
money. All that really changes is the amount of grants we will need to apply to, we are also
going to need to do some fund raising to get some more money for this project. There are also
laws in the US that state how much you are allowed to pay non-profit staff. Though the article I
read does have a solution for paying the staff, that solution being volunteers. Most small non-
profits only have basic staff that they pay and rely on volunteers to do most of the work.
This is an eye-opening article. I really did not stop to think about all of the other costs
besides salary and rent that a business would have to pay. We are going to need a lot more
money than I had originally estimated. This really will help our presentation for the next project
because we now know what all of the costs are. We can come up with a much better idea as to
what all of this is going to cost in startup. Also, what the annual expenses for this enterprise will
be. We can go into the presentation and tell everyone that what we did was the lowest cost for we

Then paperwork needs to be done such as the IRS form 1023, which is 29 pages long. The IRS

After we get our nonprofit established and approve by the IRS we would need to rent or
buy out the specific building that we want and set up additional meetings for hiring employees
and having any potential work done to our property. If we would need to do any construction on
our building that would require additional months of planning and construction. During this
process we would also need to get our word out to other organizations focused on poverty or
homelessness in Albuquerque and get the word around of our company. So, overall the time for

Starting a non-profit is hard work. There are a lot of people who have to be involved in
order to make sure the non-profit can be successful. We will need a governing board; this board
manager, some kind of HR person, and someone who can do mock interviews. Research shows
that over 50% of the entire costs of a non-profit go into its employees. For something that is not
for profit that is an obscene amount of money. More than that we will have to ensure that
everyone working at our non-profit wants to follow the values of our non-profit. Hiring people
This article was very eye opening. I had no idea that the majority of the money that non-
profits spend goes to paying its employees. Though looking back on this, it does make a lot of
sense. For most companies the majority of the annuals costs go to paying the employees. I also
really didn’t think about what the non-profit would need personnel wise behind the scenes. When
we first though of this I only really thought about jobs that our clients would interact with. I gave
no thought to those who were needed to ensure that the entire non-profit could run successfully.

This website was very useful in searching for properties and buildings in certain areas of
Albuquerque that we wanted. The site also would show all the details of a property at a quick
glance, which was time saving when searching for a space to put our company. The website also
had a map that had pins on where each property was located which helped us in picking
properties that were in our desired location. There was also a search filter section that allowed us
to narrow our searches down even more. The source seems very reliable because of all the detail
on each property and proper contact information included for each seller.
We found two very good options for buildings. They are both in locations that would be
beneficial for the clients that we are advetising to. The properties differ in the fact that one of
them would have us only renting out a section of the building for our company while for the
other property we would be renting out the whole building. Either option has different costs and
benefits. The room renting would be a lot cheaper to start out our nonprofit with, but we would
also have trouble incorporating some of the aspects of our company that we wish to provide,
such as showers and a grooming section. The building to rent would be a lot more expensive to
get when starting out, but it would give us enough room to provide all the services that we
