DISENGAGED?

What an honor to join the Marsh Harbour

Church of Christ in their very first Annual Spring
Revival. David Fincher, our missionary to
Marsh Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas, invited our
team from CCCC to join them in their revival
this April. Five of us from CCCC made the
“rough” trip down there (1 hour 45 minute plane
ride from Jacksonville) and endured a week
“getting by” (villa on the beach, fantastic meals, boat tour of the islands, snorkeling on a beautiful
reef—it was rough). Yes, this by far was one of the more treacherous mission trips we have been
on. Let me explain.

Beautiful surroundings, great food, great people. But on day

two, four, and five we had a chance to pass out over a thousand
invitations to the people in the Marsh Harbour community. This
was done primarily at a couple of grocery stores there on the
island minutes away from the church. It was amazing to see so
many people so nice, receptive, encouraging, and polite when
you approached them about something like a local revival.

You just don’t see that kind of attitude much here in the states. The locals were so kind and warm.
Even if they couldn’t make it to the revival, or even if they had no interest in the local church, their
attitude was still encouraging, engaging, and friendly. For the most part… Those that were NOT
locals (the tourists and visitors) looked a lot like you and me. Tunnel vision. No eye contact. Stoic
facial expressions. Disengaged. Not at all willing to talk about anything. And most noticeable of
all—they were in a HURRY! Not only did they not want to talk at all, they couldn’t walk fast enough
to get past us.

And it made me think—Am I like this when I walk in and out of Publix or Walmart? Do I have written
all over my face, “don’t talk to me, I’m in a hurry”? I just couldn’t seem to get out of my mind that the
people we met (or simply saw—most wouldn’t talk to us) who were visitors in this beautiful island,
appeared very sad, lonely, and discouraged. It made me think that if THAT is what our neighbors
think CHRISTIANS look like, no wonder they don’t want anything to do with us. We can do better. I
can do better. People we meet in our own community should see believers DIFFERENTLY.
Whose with me?

In His Service,
Allen

GRUMBLING & GRACE
(NIV Exo. 17:1-7 & Num. 20:10-12)
Thirst for the Water of Life:
(Exo. 17:1-7) 1The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, traveling from place to place as
the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2So they quar-
reled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put
the Lord to the test?” 3But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said,
“Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?” 4Then Moses cried
out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.” 5The Lord answered
Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff
with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and wa-
ter will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7And he called
the place Massaha and Meribahb because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is
the Lord among us or not?”
10
(Num. 20:10-12) He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them,
“Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” 11Then Moses raised his arm and struck
the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.
12
But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight
of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.”

Trust God for the Water:

*Great was the number of people and animals that felt thirst. And yes, the children of God are grumbling
and doubting once again. The Israelites needed reassurance that God was with them. It seems that even
Moses had some form of doubt/anger. Moses, speaking to the people as he did, and smiting the rock
twice, was not fitting to God’s holiness or His directions. Moses surely doubted not in the power of God,
but perhaps if God was kindly willing to gratify such rebellious people? God chastised Moses for not hon-
oring Him before the people by not letting Moses lead them into the promised land.
*Sometimes in our trials and tribulations we need reassurance too. May we learn a lesson from the Israelites, and
unlike them, trust God and remember He has held nothing back, even to Jesus enduring the cross for us. Rivers
of the water of life still flow mightily from the rock! The rock is Jesus, full of love and grace for
us.
The Rock of Meribah still stands, but it will become dust while our “rock”
Jesus and those who trust Him stand forever!
