Level: 2/A

CCSS Standards:

Main Lesson Aims (Concepts, Procedures, & Processes):

- The students will be able to use the words (certain, impossible, likely, unlikely) to
describe the chances of pulling out certain colorful balls (red) from a bag full of other
colorful balls.
Materials:

teacher books -
student book(s) -
worksheets/ papers Worksheets 1, 2, and 3.
teacher materials Bag of colorful balls, white board,
student materials/ Bags of colorful balls, bags of colorful cubes, flash cards of events,
manipulatives worksheets.
technology Data show, computer,
other Thinkcentral game
Key vocabulary with definitions (and pictures if appropriate):

word glossary definition image

Certain free from doubt or reservation; confident; sure:

Impossible not possible; unable to be, exist, happen
Likely probably or apparently destined (usually followed
by an infinitive)
Unlikely not likely to be or occur; improbable; marked by
doubt
Students’ Prior Knowledge:
- Some students might know meaning of the above vocabulary list.
- Few students might know what probability (chance) mean.

Possible Problems and Misconceptions:

- Some students might not be able to complete the activity by themselves.
- Some students might copy the answers from their friends.
Solutions:
- I will ask my MST or the TA to work with them.
- I will emphasis on them not to copy each other answers because, everyone has different
bag and should have different answers.

Lesson Schedule
Targeted teacher questions to promote HOTS
- What is the chance of…/ certain mean it will happen for sure/ impossible mean it will
never happen/ likely mean it might happen/ unlikely mean it might not happen.
Student communication and use of math language
The students must use the (certain, likely, unlikely and impossible) to describe probabilities.
Engage (warm up, review prior knowledge):
On the carpet
1- After the greeting, I will make a revision for the students about the
vocabulary (certain, likely, unlikely and impossible). I will show them a
bag that include 7 red balls and 2 green ball. I will ask the following:
what is the chance of pulling a blue ball (impossible) I will tell them
that since we don't have blue balls then there no chance for me to pull 7 min
a blue ball (impossible). Then, I will ask them what is the chance of
pulling a red ball (some students might say certain, but I will tell them
since we have other colors, it will be "likely" to pull a red ball). Finally, I
will ask them about the chance of bulling a green ball (unlikely,
because we have more reds)
2- Then I will have a bag full of blue balls (certain) since we don’t have
other colors in the bag.
3- After that I will talk about how daily events are part of the chances.
What are the chances to go to Paris today? (impossible) What are the
chances to go outside for recess today? (certain).
Core (introduce and practice new concepts & procedures):
Centers
4- I will explain the activities for the groups. The first group is going to
have small cards of daily event and a table. They will have to classify
the events into certain, likely, unlikely and impossible. I will ask them
to go and sit in their seats.
5- The second group are going to have small bags of colorful balls and
worksheet. They must write the answers based on the bags they have.
I will show them one bag and solve the first question with them. the, I
will send them to them their seats (they might need someone to help
them TA or teacher). 8 min
6- The last first group is going to have small bag for each student with
different colorful cubes and a worksheet. I will tell them they have to
solve the questions by circling the right answers based on their bag.
They will sit with me on the carpet and I will try to help them in reading
the question and direct them.
Close (wrap up, discussion, brief review activity or assessment):
7- To conclude with and check the students understanding. I will gather 6 min
them on the carpet and we will play (thinkcentral game). I will ask
them to put their hands up to answer.
Law level (each one will have a bag of cubes and should answer based on it)

Name:……………………..
circle the correct answer:
1- What are the chances of pulling out a red cube? (likely - unlikely- impossible)
2- What are the chances of pulling out a yellow cube? (likely - unlikely- impossible)
3- Wat are the chances of pulling out a blue cube? (likely - unlikely- impossible)

Middle level (each one will have a bag of balls and should answer based on it)

likely - unlikely- impossible - certain
